Chapter 6 - The Black ChapelThe Heir Nobody Was Supposed to Find

They reached the Bennett estate just before dawn.
Claire expected lights.
Security.
Police.
Instead, the mansion stood dark.
Her own home.
The place where she had spent five years believing she was safe.
Elias examined the front gate.
“No security.”
“That isn't normal.”
“No.”
Claire felt a chill.
She opened the side entrance.
Inside, everything looked untouched.
The clocks still ticked.
The chandelier still glowed faintly from emergency power.
Her framed wedding photograph stood on the console.
Claire walked past it.
She didn't recognize the woman smiling beside Daniel.
She felt sorry for her.
“Where's the chapel?” Elias asked.
“Behind the east garden.”
They crossed the grounds.
A small stone chapel stood beneath bare trees.
Claire inserted the brass key into a lock hidden beneath the altar.
It turned.
The floor opened.
Elias stared.
“You knew this existed?”
“No.”
They descended.
The stairs led into a narrow underground room.
On the walls were names.
Bennett names.
Mason names.
Dates.
Payments.
Witnesses.
Claire moved closer.
One entry stopped her.
EVELYN BENNETT. TRANSFERRED.
Below it:
NOAH BENNETT. TRANSFERRED.
Beside both entries was the same date.
November 21, 1999.
Claire's throat tightened.
“There.”
Elias pointed to a ledger.
It contained payments to doctors, drivers, private investigators, and a psychiatric facility.
One name appeared repeatedly.
St. Helena Private Neurological Center.
Claire found another page.
Patient:
E.B.
Age:
31
Status:
Protected Witness
Claire's hands shook.
“That's her.”
Then Elias found another file.
N.B.
Status:
Transferred to Carter Family Trust.
He went still.
Claire looked at him.
“Carter.”
He nodded.
“My family.”
Claire stared.
“Your family raised Noah.”
“Apparently.”
A sound came from upstairs.
A door slammed.
Someone was inside the mansion.
Elias grabbed Claire's arm.
“We need to go.”
Claire stopped.
“There's more.”
She opened one final envelope.
Inside was a legal document.
Her grandmother's signature appeared at the bottom.
Claire read the first line.
To protect my granddaughter Claire Bennett, I hereby surrender all claims to the Bennett Trust until the surviving male heir is located.
Claire's eyes widened.
“That's why.”
“What?”
“Daniel.”
Elias understood.
“If Noah comes back, Daniel loses control.”
Claire nodded.
“He wasn't killing me for the inheritance.”
She looked at the document.
“He was killing me because I was close to finding Noah.”
A floorboard creaked above them.
Then Daniel's voice drifted down the stairs.
“Claire.”
She looked up.
Daniel spoke gently.
“Come upstairs.”
Claire said nothing.
He continued.
“I know you found the chapel.”
A long pause.
Then:
“And I know you found out your mother is alive.”
Elias looked at Claire.
Daniel added:
“She won't recognize you.”
Claire froze.
“What did you do to her?”
Daniel laughed softly.
“Nothing.”
Then his voice changed.
“Your grandmother did.”
The footsteps descended.
One step.
Then another.
Claire backed toward the hidden passage.
Daniel appeared at the top of the stairs.
He looked exactly like the husband she remembered.
Perfect suit.
Perfect hair.
Perfect smile.
Only his eyes were different.
Empty.
He held a pistol.
“Claire,” he said quietly.
“You always were terrible at letting dead things stay buried.”
He raised the gun.
But before he could fire, a voice came from behind Claire.
“Drop it.”
Daniel looked past her.
Elias stood there.
May you like
Daniel's smile disappeared.
“Noah.”
