Chapter 10 - The Cabin of Broken ChildrenWhat Evelyn Tried to Warn Them About

Claire refused to go alone.

But Daniel knew that.

So they went together.

The old Bennett mine had been closed for decades.

Snow covered the road.

At dusk, they found the red ribbon.

Behind it was a narrow trail.

No tracks.

No footprints.

Only trees.

They followed.

The cabin appeared after half an hour.

Its windows were boarded.

Its door was unlocked.

Inside, the room smelled of smoke and old paper.

Claire found photographs.

Dozens.

Children.

Different ages.

Different years.

Every photograph had a name and date.

Noah found himself first.

Five years old.

Then Alexander.

Six months old.

Claire picked up another.

A young boy with dark hair.

Noah stared at it.

“That's him.”

“Alexander?”

“Yes.”

A noise came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Elias raised his weapon.

Claire whispered, “Alexander?”

No answer.

They climbed the stairs.

There was a room with a locked door.

Noah broke it open.

Empty.

Only a chair.

A chain.

And a drawing taped to the wall.

Three children holding hands.

Above them someone had written:

THE THREE BENNETTS.

Claire touched the drawing.

“Who drew this?”

Noah shook his head.

Then he noticed writing on the floor.

A date.

OCTOBER 8, 2026.

Today's date.

Claire's stomach dropped.

Someone was here.

Recently.

They searched the cabin.

Under the bed was a recording device.

It clicked on automatically.

Evelyn's voice filled the room.

“Claire.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“I didn't know whether you'd ever find this.”

Her mother's voice sounded older.

Fragile.

But clear.

“Your father wasn't the mastermind.”

Claire opened her eyes.

“I was.”

Elias frowned.

The recording continued.

“I knew Victor wanted Noah.”

“I knew your father wanted the trust.”

“And I made a terrible choice.”

Claire's breathing became shallow.

“I gave them the boy.”

Noah looked at her.

“What?”

Evelyn continued.

“I thought I was giving them Alexander.”

Claire froze.

“I changed the records.”

Noah stared into the darkness.

“I gave them Noah by mistake.”

The recording crackled.

“I realized too late.”

Claire's hand flew to her mouth.

“That means...”

Noah whispered:

“They took the wrong child.”

Evelyn's voice continued.

“I spent twenty-seven years trying to undo what I did.”

Claire began crying.

“I couldn't return because they threatened Claire.”

Noah stared at her.

“She protected you.”

The recording played one final section.

“If Claire hears this, tell her that the man who calls himself Alexander isn't your brother.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Elias frowned.

“What?”

The recording continued.

“He is the son of Victor Mason.”

Silence.

Then:

“And Noah Bennett is not Noah.”

The recording ended.

No one moved.

Claire looked at the two men beside her.

Her entire family history had just been erased.

A branch of blood she trusted was suddenly poison.

Elias whispered:

“Then who is Noah?”

Before Claire could answer, a bullet punched through the window.

Elias shoved her down.

Another shot.

Then another.

The cabin erupted into chaos.

Claire crawled across the floor.

Noah grabbed the recording.

Someone shouted from outside.

“Evelyn lied to all of you!”

Claire looked toward the broken window.

Daniel stood among the trees.

Holding Alexander at gunpoint.

And behind Daniel was an older man Claire had never seen before.

But Noah recognized him instantly.

May you like

He whispered:

“Victor Mason.”
