Chapter 12 - The Grandmother's Last RoomThe Woman Who Knew Everything

They escaped the cabin seconds before it collapsed.
Daniel survived.
Barely.
Police transported him under guard.
Victor disappeared into the forest.
Alexander vanished with him.
Claire stood outside the burning wreckage, staring at the flames.
“My grandmother.”
Elias nodded.
“We need to find her.”
“She died three years ago.”
Daniel had said otherwise.
One sentence.
One impossible sentence.
It was enough.
Back at the estate, Claire searched her grandmother's old records.
Nothing.
Then she remembered the black chapel.
The ledger.
The transfers.
She returned underground.
Behind the wall containing the family names was another panel.
Elias pried it open.
A room appeared.
Small.
Warm.
Recently used.
There was a bed.
Medicine.
Photographs.
And a handwritten journal.
Claire opened it.
The first page read:
I knew what Victor was doing.
She turned the page.
I let it happen because I believed I could protect the family.
Claire's hands shook.
Page after page described the events of 1999.
The carriage.
Evelyn.
Julian.
Victor.
The twins.
Then the final entry:
I saved Claire by destroying the rest of us.
Claire stopped.
There was an address.
A private nursing residence.
She and Elias went immediately.
The place sat near the edge of Denver.
An elderly woman sat by a window.
Claire knew her.
Not from recent photographs.
From memory.
Her grandmother.
Alive.
Claire froze in the doorway.
The woman looked up.
Tears filled her eyes.
“You came.”
Claire couldn't speak.
“You're alive.”
“I was.”
“Why did everyone say you died?”
“Because Victor needed me dead.”
Claire approached slowly.
“What happened to my mother?”
Her grandmother looked away.
“I betrayed her.”
“And Noah?”
“I betrayed him too.”
Claire's voice broke.
“Why?”
“Because Victor threatened to kill you.”
Noah stepped into the room.
The old woman gasped.
“Claire.”
She looked at him.
Then covered her mouth.
“Noah.”
He stared.
“Am I Noah?”
She began crying.
“No.”
Claire's heart dropped.
Her grandmother looked at him.
“You are not Noah Bennett.”
Noah stood frozen.
“Then who am I?”
She whispered:
“Daniel's younger brother.”
Silence.
Claire turned toward Elias.
“No.”
The grandmother continued.
“Victor had two sons.”
“Daniel and...”
“Michael.”
Noah shook his head.
“I don't remember.”
“You were stolen.”
The old woman pointed to a photograph.
It showed three boys.
Daniel.
A toddler.
And another child.
“Noah was the Bennett child.”
Claire stared.
“Then where is Noah?”
The grandmother's face broke.
“He died.”
“When?”
“Three days after the carriage crash.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“But the photograph.”
“I used the child's identity to protect Michael.”
Noah whispered:
“So I am a Mason.”
“Yes.”
The room fell silent.
Claire looked at the old woman.
“Why would you do that?”
“Because Victor was going to kill Michael.”
Noah took a step back.
His entire identity had collapsed.
Then the grandmother spoke again.
“There is one thing I never told anyone.”
Claire looked up.
“Your mother didn't give birth to two boys.”
“What?”
“She gave birth to one.”
She pointed toward Claire.
“And another child was born six hours later.”
Claire's face went blank.
“Where?”
The grandmother whispered:
“At the Bennett estate.”
Claire stared.
“What are you saying?”
Her grandmother's eyes filled with tears.
“The third child.”
May you like
She paused.
“Was yours.”
