Chapter 9: The Memory That Wasn't Hers

“LILY!”
I caught her before her head hit the floor.
She was unconscious.
Her body was limp in my arms.
“Lily! Wake up!”
Sarah rushed toward us.
“Put her down.”
“What happened?”
“She activated.”
“Activated what?”
Sarah looked at the blinking red light.
“The memory sequence.”
Robert slammed his hand against the control panel.
“Turn it off!”
“I can't.”
“Then destroy it!”
Sarah shook her head.
“If you destroy the system while it's running, you could permanently damage her.”
I stared at Lily.
Her eyes were closed.
Her breathing was shallow.
“What do we do?”
Sarah looked at me.
“We wait.”
I hated those words.
Wait.
I'd spent three years waiting for answers.
Now my daughter was lying unconscious on a cold floor while the truth crawled out of the darkness.
I picked her up.
Then Lily suddenly gasped.
Her eyes opened.
But they didn't look like Lily's eyes.
They were cold.
Focused.
Adult.
She looked directly at me.
“Daniel.”
I froze.
She had never called me Daniel.
She always called me Daddy.
“Lily?”
She shook her head.
“My name isn't Lily.”
Sarah covered her mouth.
Robert whispered:
“Oh no.”
I held her tighter.
“Who are you?”
She looked around the room.
Then said:
“Where is Alexander?”
I stared at her.
“Who?”
“Alexander Morgan.”
“Why?”
“He has to know.”
Sarah stepped forward.
“Lily, listen to me.”
Lily looked at her.
“You're Sarah.”
Sarah froze.
“Yes.”
“You failed.”
Sarah's face crumpled.
“I know.”
“You were supposed to protect Daniel.”
“I tried.”
“You broke the protocol.”
“I had no choice.”
Lily looked at me.
Then her expression changed.
For a second, she looked like my little girl again.
“Daddy?”
I hugged her.
“I'm here.”
She began crying.
“I saw things.”
“What things?”
“People.”
“Who?”
“Hundreds.”
She covered her ears.
“They were screaming.”
Sarah knelt beside her.
“You saw the memory archive.”
Lily nodded.
“What did you see?”
Lily looked at me.
“My grandfather.”
“Alexander?”
“Yes.”
“What was he doing?”
“He was talking to Mommy.”
Sarah went pale.
“What did they say?”
Lily closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“Mommy asked him to save you.”
My heart tightened.
“Save me from what?”
“Your father.”
I looked toward Sarah.
She nodded slowly.
“That was the plan.”
“What plan?”
“To expose him.”
“How?”
“By using Lily.”
I stared at her.
“I don't understand.”
Sarah sat on the floor.
“Your father built an organization that controlled politicians, businesses, police officials, judges.”
Robert added:
“And anyone who threatened it disappeared.”
I looked at Lily.
“Why her?”
“Because Alexander discovered that the organization's records were too dangerous to store in one place.”
“So he put them in her?”
“Not exactly.”
Sarah pointed toward Lily's head.
“He created a memory system.”
I frowned.
“A memory system?”
“Every piece of information was broken into fragments.”
“Names.”
“Passwords.”
“Locations.”
“Transactions.”
“Orders.”
“They were hidden inside a child's developing memory.”
I stared at her.
“You're saying Lily has all of it?”
“Not consciously.”
“Then how does she access it?”
“The trigger.”
I looked at the metal box.
“So that box activates the memories.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did my father say she was a weapon?”
Sarah's eyes filled with tears.
“Because once the memories are fully activated…”
She stopped.
“Say it.”
“She can access everything.”
“That's not a weapon.”
Sarah looked at me.
“It is when the organization controls what she remembers.”
I felt a chill.
“What do you mean?”
“The memories aren't just information.”
“What are they?”
“Commands.”
Silence.
Robert stepped closer.
“They programmed her.”
I stared at Lily.
“What kind of commands?”
Sarah whispered:
“To identify people.”
“To open accounts.”
“To access systems.”
“To recognize coded messages.”
“To execute instructions.”
I looked at Lily.
“She was turned into a human key.”
“Yes.”
A loud crash came from upstairs.
We all froze.
Someone had entered the house.
Robert raised his weapon.
“They found us.”
Sarah grabbed Lily.
“There's another exit.”
“Where?”
“Behind the wall.”
I looked at the monitors.
“Can we take the evidence?”
Sarah shook her head.
“Not the equipment.”
I looked at the metal box.
“What about this?”
“Take it.”
I grabbed it.
The moment I touched the box, the red light stopped blinking.
Then the lid opened completely.
Inside was a small glass chip.
I stared at it.
“What is this?”
Sarah whispered:
“The master key.”
Footsteps thundered overhead.
Robert looked toward the staircase.
“Go.”
We ran.
A hidden door opened behind the medical cabinet.
We entered a narrow passage.
Robert closed it behind us.
Gunshots erupted upstairs.
Lily held my hand.
“Daddy.”
“What?”
“They're coming.”
“I know.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“I know who they are.”
My heart skipped.
“Who?”
She whispered a name.
“Grayson.”
I stopped.
“How do you know?”
“I saw him.”
“Where?”
“In Mommy's memory.”
Sarah stopped walking.
“What did you see?”
Lily stared at her.
“Grayson wasn't working for my grandfather.”
Sarah's face changed.
“Then who?”
Lily whispered:
“The President.”
Nobody moved.
Robert looked at me.
“That can't be.”
Lily nodded.
“He gave the order.”
“What order?”
“To kill Mommy.”
Sarah covered her mouth.
I felt my blood run cold.
“Are you sure?”
Lily nodded.
“I saw the meeting.”
“Where?”
“The White House.”
Robert's eyes widened.
“What?”
Lily continued.
“Grayson was there.”
“My father was there.”
“And another man.”
“Who?”
Lily looked directly at me.
“The man who ordered the hit.”
I swallowed.
“Who?”
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Your real father.”
I stared at her.
“Alexander?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Lily's expression became terrified.
“The man you thought was your father.”
I froze.
“He isn't dead.”
Robert whispered:
“He's still alive.”
Sarah grabbed my arm.
“We need to leave.”
“Why?”
“Because if Lily remembers the next sequence…”
“What happens?”
Sarah looked behind us.
“They'll know exactly where we are.”
The passage suddenly filled with a low mechanical hum.
Lily stopped.
Her eyes widened.
“Daddy.”
“What?”
“They found me.”
“How?”
She pointed at the metal box.
“It transmitted the activation.”
I stared at the box.
A tiny light turned red.
Then another.
And another.
Robert looked terrified.
“That's not a tracker.”
“What is it?”
He whispered:
“It's a beacon.”
A voice suddenly echoed through the passage.
Loud.
Clear.
Impossible to ignore.
“Subject located.”
Lily began trembling.
The walls around us started locking one by one.
Steel doors slammed shut behind us.
Then ahead.
Then beside us.
We were trapped.
Sarah grabbed Lily.
“Daniel, run!”
“There is nowhere to run!”
Lily suddenly screamed.
“Daddy!”
Her eyes rolled upward again.
The voice that came from her mouth wasn't hers.
It was an adult male voice.
Calm.
Cold.
Commanding.
“Protocol Blackbird activated.”
The master key in my hand began glowing red.
Every light in the tunnel turned on.
Then the voice spoke again.
“Primary target identified.”
I looked around.
“Who?”
Lily's head slowly turned toward me.
Her eyes were completely blank.
Then she pointed at me.
“Daniel Morgan.”
My heart stopped.
The voice continued:
“Terminate the primary target.”
Sarah screamed:
“DANIEL, GET AWAY FROM HER!”
I stumbled backward.
Lily took one step toward me.
Then another.
Her face remained expressionless.
And for the first time in my life...
my daughter looked at me like I was a stranger.
May you like
Then she raised her hand.
Somewhere inside the walls, a weapon chambered a round.
