Chapter 5: Sarah's Voice

“Daniel…”

The voice came again.

Soft.

Faint.

Impossible.

I stood over the opening in the floor, unable to breathe.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even my father had gone completely still.

I stared into the darkness beneath the house.

“Sarah?”

No answer.

I stepped toward the opening.

My father grabbed my arm.

“Don't.”

I ripped myself free.

“You heard her.”

“That isn't Sarah.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

His voice was strangely calm.

“That is exactly what I expect you to believe.”

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Before he could answer, Lily suddenly screamed.

“Daddy!”

I turned.

The masked man holding her had dragged her toward the back door.

I raised the gun.

“Let her go.”

The man laughed.

“You won't shoot.”

I aimed directly at his chest.

“You don't know me.”

He tightened his grip around Lily.

“Drop the weapon.”

I took one step forward.

“Let her go.”

“Drop it.”

I didn't.

Then Lily looked directly at me.

She wasn't crying anymore.

She was strangely calm.

“Daddy.”

“What?”

“Look at his hand.”

I glanced at the man's wrist.

A black tattoo.

Three circles connected by a thin line.

The same symbol appeared on the photograph Sarah had left behind.

My eyes widened.

“You…”

The masked man suddenly pulled Lily toward the doorway.

I fired.

The bullet struck the wall beside him.

He ducked.

Robert, still bleeding on the floor, kicked the man's ankle.

The man stumbled.

Lily broke free.

I rushed forward and grabbed her.

“Run!”

We sprinted toward the stairs.

Behind us, gunshots erupted.

Glass shattered.

People screamed.

I dragged Lily through the hallway and into my bedroom.

I slammed the door.

Locked it.

Then pushed the dresser against it.

Lily was breathing heavily.

“Daddy…”

“Are you hurt?”

She shook her head.

I checked her arms.

Her face.

Her neck.

Nothing.

Then she looked at me.

“Mommy told me to come here.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“Before tonight.”

“When?”

“Last week.”

I stared at her.

“What did she say?”

Lily reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

My hands began shaking before I even opened it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Sarah's handwriting.

I had seen it thousands of times.

The note contained only one sentence.

If Daniel ever discovers the truth, take him to the room beneath his childhood bedroom.

I looked at Lily.

“Where did you get this?”

“Mommy gave it to me.”

“When?”

“Before she died.”

I froze.

“What?”

Lily nodded.

“She told me to hide it until you asked about her.”

I couldn't speak.

My wife had supposedly died three years ago.

But Lily was telling me Sarah had prepared her for this moment.

I looked toward the bedroom wall.

My childhood bedroom.

It was directly across the hall.

I hadn't entered it in years.

I opened the door.

Dust covered the furniture.

The room smelled like old wood and memories.

My childhood desk was still there.

My father's bookshelf.

The old model airplane I'd built when I was ten.

I walked toward the bed.

“Where?”

Lily pointed at the floor.

“There.”

I moved the rug.

Nothing.

I knocked against the wooden boards.

Hollow.

I knelt.

There was a tiny metal ring almost invisible beneath the dust.

I pulled it.

A section of the floor lifted.

A staircase descended into darkness.

I stared down.

“This house has a basement?”

Lily shook her head.

“Mommy called it the memory room.”

I looked at her.

“The what?”

Before she could answer, footsteps thundered outside.

Someone slammed against my bedroom door.

BANG!

“Daniel!”

My father's voice.

“Open the door.”

I ignored him.

“Daddy!”

Another impact.

BANG!

The dresser shifted.

I grabbed Lily's hand.

“Down.”

We descended the hidden stairs.

The moment we reached the bottom, the door above us slammed open.

I heard footsteps entering the room.

My father shouted:

“Find them!”

We kept moving.

The staircase opened into a narrow corridor.

Old photographs lined the walls.

I lifted my flashlight.

The first photograph showed my father.

The second showed my mother.

The third showed Sarah.

Then I stopped.

There was a photograph of me.

But I was only twelve.

Standing beside my mother.

And behind us stood a man I didn't recognize.

Except I did.

It was Grayson.

He had been there my entire life.

I looked closer.

My mother had written something beneath the photograph.

They made Daniel forget this night.

My hands went cold.

Lily whispered:

“Daddy?”

I kept walking.

At the end of the corridor was a steel door.

No handle.

Only a small circular scanner.

Then I remembered the pendant.

I had thrown it across the dining room.

It was gone.

But suddenly I felt something in my pocket.

I reached inside.

The pendant.

I hadn't noticed picking it up.

I held it against the scanner.

A green light appeared.

CLICK.

The steel door unlocked.

We stepped inside.

The room was enormous.

Banks of old monitors lined the walls.

Boxes filled the shelves.

Hundreds of files were stacked across metal cabinets.

And in the center of the room stood a single chair.

With straps.

I stared at it.

Something about the chair triggered a memory.

A bright light.

A needle.

Someone holding my head.

My mother's voice.

“Daniel, don't look at him.”

Then my father's voice.

“You're going to forget this.”

I stumbled backward.

Lily grabbed me.

“Daddy?”

I touched my head.

“I remember.”

“What?”

I looked around the room.

“This is where they did it.”

A monitor suddenly turned on.

Static filled the screen.

Then an image appeared.

Sarah.

She was sitting in front of the camera.

Alive.

My knees nearly gave out.

“Sarah…”

She looked directly into the camera.

Her eyes were red.

She had clearly been crying.

“Daniel, if you're watching this…”

She paused.

“I failed to protect you.”

I stepped closer.

Sarah continued.

“Your father will tell you I betrayed the family.”

She shook her head.

“I didn't.”

“He will tell you I stole money.”

“I didn't.”

“He will tell you I was killed by strangers.”

She looked down.

Then whispered:

“He killed me.”

My breathing stopped.

Sarah raised her eyes.

“Daniel, your father has been running the organization for twenty-seven years.”

The screen flickered.

“Your mother discovered the truth.”

Another flicker.

“She tried to expose him.”

Sarah's voice broke.

“He killed her.”

I covered my mouth.

Lily stared at the screen.

Sarah continued.

“Then he came for me.”

She leaned closer to the camera.

“But there is something he doesn't know.”

She smiled sadly.

“I didn't keep the evidence in the vault.”

I frowned.

“Where did you hide it?”

Sarah looked directly into the camera.

“Inside Lily.”

My blood turned to ice.

The video suddenly cut to black.

Lily whispered:

“Daddy…”

I looked at her.

“What did she mean?”

Before she could answer, the steel door behind us locked.

I turned.

My father stood on the other side of the glass.

He was holding a remote.

And beside him stood Helen.

She smiled.

My father pressed a button.

The monitors around us switched on simultaneously.

Every screen showed the same image.

Sarah.

But this time, she wasn't alone.

She was standing beside a newborn baby.

Lily.

I stared at the screen.

Then Sarah spoke.

“The child is not Daniel's daughter.”

My entire world stopped.

The video continued.

“She is the heir.”

My father looked through the glass.

And for the first time...

he smiled.

Because the secret Sarah had died protecting wasn't about money.

It wasn't about the company.

It was about Lily's identity.

And suddenly I understood why everyone had been trying so desperately to get the pendant.

May you like

Because Lily wasn't the key to the vault.

Lily was the reason the vault existed.
