Chapter 14: The Woman I Married

The screen went black.

But I couldn't stop staring at it.

My wedding photograph remained burned into my mind.

Sarah standing beside me.

Her white dress.

My nervous smile.

The flowers.

The guests.

And behind us, half-hidden among the crowd...

Elias Kane.

My wife's father.

The founder of Blackbird.

The man who had been manipulating my life before I even knew his name.

I turned slowly toward Mara.

“Is it true?”

She didn't answer.

“Mara.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

I felt something inside me collapse.

“She was his daughter?”

“Yes.”

“She knew who he was?”

“Yes.”

“She married me because of him?”

Mara shook her head.

“No.”

“Then why?”

“She married you because she loved you.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Love?”

“Yes.”

“She lied about everything.”

“She lied to protect you.”

“She let me believe she was dead.”

“Because Elias would have killed you.”

“She brought Lily into my life.”

“Because Lily needed you.”

I looked at Lily.

She was still connected to the machine.

Her face was pale.

The countdown continued.

10:21

10:20

I turned back to Mara.

“Then why did Elias say I married his daughter?”

“Because he wants you to believe your entire marriage was part of his plan.”

“Wasn't it?”

Mara shook her head.

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I watched Sarah betray him.”

I froze.

“What?”

Mara stepped closer.

“She was supposed to marry you, gain your trust, locate the Blackbird files, and bring Lily to him.”

“And instead?”

“She fell in love with you.”

I looked at Lily.

“And she betrayed her father.”

“Yes.”

“So he killed her.”

“He tried.”

I stared at her.

“She survived.”

Mara nodded.

“Until the night she disappeared.”

I felt my throat tighten.

“Where is she now?”

Mara looked toward Lily.

“She is inside the system.”

“What does that mean?”

“She never truly died.”

I stepped closer.

“What are you saying?”

Mara whispered:

“Sarah transferred part of her memory into Blackbird.”

My stomach turned.

“Part of her memory?”

“She knew Elias would eventually find her.”

“So she hid herself.”

“Yes.”

“Inside Lily?”

Mara shook her head.

“No.”

“Then where?”

Mara pointed toward the master key.

“Inside the network.”

I stared at it.

“The voice we've been hearing…”

“Yes.”

“Is Sarah?”

Mara nodded.

I couldn't breathe.

All this time, I had thought the voice belonged to my grandfather.

But perhaps it had been Sarah guiding us.

I looked at Lily.

“Then who was speaking through her?”

Mara's face changed.

“That's the problem.”

“What?”

“The voice that appeared after the activation…”

She swallowed.

“Wasn't Sarah.”

I stared at her.

“Then who?”

“Elias.”

The countdown continued.

08:42

08:41

Suddenly Lily's eyes opened.

She looked directly at me.

“Daddy.”

I rushed toward her.

“Lily.”

She whispered:

“Don't trust Mara.”

Mara froze.

“What?”

Lily stared at her.

“You're lying.”

Mara stepped backward.

“Lily…”

“You're not my mother.”

Mara's face went pale.

I turned toward her.

“What is she talking about?”

Mara shook her head.

“She doesn't understand.”

Lily screamed:

“You killed her!”

Mara covered her ears.

“No!”

“YOU KILLED SARAH!”

I stared at Mara.

“Did you?”

She didn't answer.

I raised my gun.

“Mara.”

She finally looked at me.

“I didn't have a choice.”

“What did you do?”

“I found Sarah.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

“And?”

“She was already dying.”

I felt my heart crack.

“You let her die?”

“No.”

Mara shook her head.

“I tried to save her.”

“Then why did Lily say you killed her?”

“Because I did.”

Silence.

Mara's voice broke.

“I killed Sarah.”

I lowered the gun slightly.

“Why?”

“She asked me to.”

I stared.

“What?”

“Sarah knew Elias was coming.”

“She knew he would torture her.”

“So she asked me to end it.”

I couldn't speak.

Mara continued.

“She made me promise to protect you.”

“And Lily.”

“And destroy Blackbird.”

I looked at Lily.

“Then why did you lie?”

“Because Elias was watching.”

“Watching what?”

“Everything.”

Mara pointed toward the cameras.

“Every room.”

“Every phone.”

“Every person.”

“Even Sarah's funeral.”

My stomach tightened.

“You watched my funeral?”

“Yes.”

“You watched me bury an empty coffin?”

Mara nodded.

“Sarah's body was never recovered.”

I felt tears in my eyes.

“She was alive?”

“Barely.”

“What happened?”

Mara looked at Lily.

“She used the last of her strength to upload the final memory.”

“To Blackbird?”

“Yes.”

“The memory of Elias.”

Mara stepped closer.

“That memory is the only thing capable of shutting down the network.”

I looked at the countdown.

06:18

“So we need it.”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

Mara pointed at Lily.

“Inside her.”

I shook my head.

“You said it wasn't.”

“I said Sarah's consciousness wasn't inside Lily.”

She looked at the machine.

“The final memory is.”

I understood.

Lily was carrying the final command.

The memory of Elias.

The key to destroying Blackbird.

But extracting it could kill her.

I looked at the machine.

“How do we get it out?”

Mara shook her head.

“We can't.”

“Then how do we stop the countdown?”

“You can't.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

Mara looked toward the ceiling.

“You need to enter the memory.”

“How?”

“Through Lily.”

I looked at my daughter.

“You mean connect myself to the system?”

“Yes.”

“What happens to her?”

“If you fail…”

She stopped.

“If I fail?”

“Both of you will be trapped.”

“Forever?”

“Yes.”

Robert stepped forward.

“Daniel.”

I looked at him.

“You don't have to do this.”

I looked at Lily.

She was watching me.

Her eyes were full of fear.

But she nodded.

“I want you to.”

I knelt beside her.

“You're sure?”

She nodded.

“You always told me family means staying.”

I smiled through my tears.

“Yeah.”

“Then stay.”

I took her hand.

“I will.”

Mara connected the final cables.

The machine began humming.

The countdown continued.

04:59

04:58

I looked at Robert.

“If we don't come back…”

He shook his head.

“You will.”

I looked at Mara.

“Protect her.”

“I will.”

I looked at Lily.

“Ready?”

She nodded.

“Ready.”

Mara pressed the activation switch.

White light exploded around us.

The room disappeared.

I fell.

But I wasn't falling through darkness.

I was falling through memories.

My childhood.

My wedding.

Sarah.

Lily.

My mother's death.

My father's lies.

Everything passed around me.

Then I landed.

Hard.

On a polished marble floor.

I looked up.

I was inside my own wedding.

The room was full of people.

But nobody moved.

They were frozen.

Like photographs.

Sarah stood at the altar.

She looked exactly as she had on our wedding day.

She turned toward me.

“Daniel.”

I froze.

“Sarah?”

She smiled.

“I've been waiting for you.”

I ran toward her.

But she stepped backward.

“Don't.”

“Why?”

“Because this isn't real.”

“Then what is it?”

“A memory.”

“Whose?”

Sarah's expression changed.

She looked terrified.

“His.”

The lights went out.

A slow clap echoed through the ballroom.

I turned.

Elias Kane stood at the back.

He smiled.

“Welcome home, Daniel.”

I raised the gun.

“Where is Lily?”

Elias laughed.

“She isn't here.”

“Where is she?”

He pointed toward Sarah.

“You'll have to choose.”

Sarah's face filled with fear.

Elias spoke again.

“You have three minutes.”

The ballroom split apart.

On one side, Sarah.

On the other, Lily.

Both screaming my name.

Elias smiled.

“Save your wife…”

Then he pointed toward Lily.

“…or save your daughter.”

The countdown appeared in the sky.

03:00

And Sarah suddenly whispered:

“Daniel, don't choose either of us.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

She looked directly into my eyes.

“Choose yourself.”

Then she disappeared.

And Lily screamed:

“DADDY!”

The countdown dropped.

02:59

02:58

02:57

I finally understood.

Elias hadn't brought me into this memory to make me choose between them.

He wanted me to choose the person I'd been programmed to become.

But Sarah had left me one final clue.

Choose yourself.

I turned away from both of them.

Toward the center of the empty ballroom.

And there, hidden beneath the floor, I saw a tiny black box.

The Blackbird command.

I reached for it.

Elias screamed.

“No!”

For the first time, he sounded afraid.

I opened the box.

Inside was a photograph.

Not of Sarah.

Not of Lily.

Of me.

As a child.

Standing beside Elias.

And written on the back were six words:

THE FIRST BLACKBIRD WAS DANIEL.

I stared at the photograph.

Then everything changed.

Because I suddenly remembered.

May you like

I had not been Blackbird's victim.

I had been its first subject.
