Chapter 8 - The Man Behind the DoorThe door opened.

Adrian walked in.
Clara stared at him.
He wore a dark coat.
No security team.
No weapon visible.
Just that familiar expression.
Calm.
Controlled.
Almost gentle.
"Evelyn," he said.
She stepped in front of Clara.
"Don't."
Adrian's eyes moved to Clara.
"Can we talk?"
Clara laughed.
"You've had three years."
"I know."
"You lied to me."
"I know."
"You destroyed my family."
"I know."
"Then why are you here?"
Adrian took a slow breath.
"Because everything you think you know is wrong."
Clara stared at him.
"That's becoming everyone's favorite sentence."
Adrian looked at Evelyn.
"She found Julian."
Evelyn's face tightened.
Adrian continued.
"He shouldn't be alive."
Clara stepped forward.
"But he is."
"Yes."
"And you knew."
"I did."
"Why?"
Adrian lowered his eyes.
"Because I was protecting him."
Clara almost laughed.
"From your family?"
"From our family."
Evelyn interrupted.
"You don't get to pretend you're innocent."
Adrian looked at her.
"You were the one who started this."
Silence.
Clara looked between them.
"Enough."
They both stopped.
She turned toward Adrian.
"Tell me what happened the night my father died."
Adrian's expression changed.
"I wasn't there to kill him."
"Then why were you there?"
"To warn him."
"About what?"
"Victoria."
Clara frowned.
"What does Victoria have to do with my father?"
Adrian looked at Evelyn.
"Everything."
He handed Clara a flash drive.
"Watch this."
Clara inserted it into the nearest computer.
Security footage appeared.
Her father's study.
He was arguing with Victoria.
Victoria was screaming.
"You promised me!"
Clara watched in disbelief.
Her father responded.
"You're just a child."
Victoria slapped him.
"I know where the records are."
The footage ended.
Clara turned slowly.
"Victoria knew about the trust."
Adrian nodded.
"She wanted it."
"Why?"
"Because Bennett Holdings wasn't just a company."
Adrian's voice dropped.
"It was the key to an international financial network."
Clara felt a chill.
"What network?"
He looked directly at her.
"Black Meridian."
The name meant nothing.
Until Julian's warning came back.
Clara turned to Evelyn.
"You knew."
Evelyn said nothing.
Suddenly Adrian's phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
"What's wrong?" Clara asked.
Adrian looked at her.
"Victoria knows you're here."
"And?"
"She knows Julian is alive."
Evelyn whispered.
"Impossible."
Adrian lowered the phone.
"She's coming."
A distant explosion shook the house.
Windows rattled.
Clara stared toward the hallway.
Another explosion.
Then the sound of cars arriving outside.
Adrian grabbed Clara's hand.
"We have two minutes."
She pulled away.
"I don't trust you."
"I know."
He looked into her eyes.
"But if you stay here, you'll die."
Clara hesitated.
Then alarms erupted throughout the mansion.
Evelyn turned pale.
"There's only one exit."
Clara looked at Adrian.
"Show me."
They ran.
Behind them, the front doors exploded inward.
May you like
Victoria had arrived.
And she wasn't alone.
