Chapter 3 - Phase TwoThe black sedan entered an underground parking garage beneath a nondescript office building.

Clara stepped out.

Two men were waiting.

The first was Daniel Reed.

Former federal investigator.

The second was Marcus Hale.

Cybersecurity specialist.

Daniel handed Clara a tablet.

"Victoria has already started cleaning up."

Clara glanced at the screen.

"How much?"

"Seven offshore transfers tonight."

"Amount?"

"One hundred and eighty-four million."

Clara smiled.

"She's scared."

Daniel frowned.

"Actually, she's moving the money because she knows you saw something."

"I didn't see anything."

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"You slapped her in front of three hundred people."

Clara looked at him.

"That wasn't part of the plan."

"It wasn't?"

"No."

Daniel laughed.

For three years, Clara had been almost impossible to read.

Tonight, however, he had seen something new.

Anger.

Not reckless anger.

Controlled anger.

The kind that came from someone who had already decided exactly how the story would end.

Marcus approached.

"We found the first account."

Clara's expression changed.

"Who owns it?"

Marcus hesitated.

"You."

Silence.

Clara stared at him.

"That's impossible."

"We thought so too."

He turned the tablet around.

A corporate registration appeared.

Bennett Meridian Trust.

Beneficiary:

Clara Bennett.

Date established:

Twenty-two years ago.

Clara slowly sat down.

"My father created it?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't I know?"

"Because he didn't want you to."

Daniel opened another file.

"He was expecting something like this to happen."

Clara read through the documents.

Then she noticed one sentence.

If the trust is activated, all Sterling family assets connected to Bennett Holdings become recoverable.

She looked up.

"Recoverable?"

Marcus nodded.

"Your father structured the original acquisitions differently from what everyone believed."

Clara's eyes sharpened.

"So the Sterling empire was built partly on Bennett money."

"More than partly."

"How much?"

Daniel answered.

"Approximately sixty-two percent."

Clara leaned back.

For years Adrian had believed he was the heir to the Sterling empire.

He wasn't.

He was sitting on stolen money.

And she had just discovered the legal weapon that could take it all back.

But Marcus wasn't finished.

"There is something else."

He opened another file.

A video.

Timestamped three days before Clara's father's death.

Her father appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

Afraid.

Clara's breath caught.

"Clara," he said, "if you're watching this, I'm probably dead."

She stared at the screen.

"There are people inside the Sterling family who have been taking money from both companies for years."

He paused.

"I tried to stop them."

The video flickered.

"That's why I had to create the trust."

Clara leaned forward.

Her father's voice became quieter.

"And if Adrian ever asks you to sign anything after my death..."

He looked directly into the camera.

"Don't sign."

The video ended.

Clara remained silent.

Daniel watched her carefully.

"There's one problem."

"What?"

"That video isn't the most recent."

Clara looked up.

Marcus opened another folder.

"The surveillance archive we recovered contains footage from the night your father died."

Clara's heart stopped.

"Show me."

The screen lit up.

Her father's mansion appeared.

A black car entered the driveway.

A man stepped out.

The image was blurry.

Then the camera zoomed.

Clara froze.

She recognized him immediately.

Adrian.

He entered the house at 11:42 p.m.

Her father died at 12:18 a.m.

Clara slowly stood.

"Why didn't the police see this?"

"They never received the footage."

"Why?"

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Because someone erased the original recording."

"Then how did you recover it?"

Marcus looked at Clara.

"We didn't."

He pressed another button.

A second figure appeared behind Adrian.

A woman.

Clara stared.

Her blood ran cold.

Victoria.

The two of them entered the house together.

Clara's fingers tightened around the tablet.

For three years, she had believed Victoria was the other woman.

Now she understood.

Victoria hadn't stolen her husband.

Victoria had helped steal her life.

Clara looked at Daniel.

"Phase Two."

Daniel nodded.

"What comes next?"

Clara closed the file.

"We make them trust me again."

Daniel frowned.

"You just slapped Victoria."

Clara's lips curved.

"I know."

May you like

She looked toward the city lights beyond the garage.

"And tomorrow, I'm going to save her."
