Chapter 15 - The Last Man StandingMidnight.

The river terminal was empty except for the people who had spent years hiding the truth.

Victor stood beneath the old warehouse lights.

Leo stood beside him.

Mateo was there too.

Nora's mother was tied to a chair.

Lorenzo entered with Nora and Daniel.

Victor smiled.

“You came.”

Lorenzo stopped.

“You wanted the recording.”

“Yes.”

“You'll never get it.”

Victor laughed.

“You don't understand.”

He pointed toward Nora.

“She is the recording.”

Nora frowned.

Victor explained.

“Daniel told you everything three years ago.”

She froze.

“I don't remember.”

“You were drugged.”

Lorenzo stepped forward.

“What did you do to her?”

Victor smiled.

“You already know.”

Nora's memory suddenly returned.

A hospital room.

Daniel holding her hand.

Her mother crying.

Leo standing behind the glass.

And Lorenzo's father telling her:

“Forget him.”

She staggered.

“I remember.”

Everyone went silent.

Nora looked at Victor.

“You erased my memory.”

“No.”

Victor smiled.

“Your mother did.”

Nora turned.

Her mother began crying.

“I was trying to save you.”

“You stole three years from me.”

“I was afraid.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You always were.”

Leo raised his gun.

“Enough.”

Lorenzo moved in front of Nora.

Victor laughed.

“You still protect her.”

“Yes.”

“You don't even know whether she will stay.”

Lorenzo looked at Nora.

“I don't need guarantees.”

Victor's smile faded.

Then sirens sounded outside.

Police surrounded the terminal.

Victor's face changed.

“How?”

Daniel held up the hidden chip.

“Because the recording has been streaming for the last hour.”

Lorenzo's security chief had uploaded everything.

Every name.

Every transaction.

Every confession.

Victor's empire collapsed in seconds.

Mateo ran.

Leo raised his weapon.

Lorenzo disarmed him.

They fought hand to hand.

Leo screamed:

“You took everything from me!”

Lorenzo pinned him against the wall.

“No.”

He looked toward Nora.

“You did that yourself.”

Police stormed inside.

Victor was arrested.

Mateo was captured outside.

Leo was taken away in handcuffs.

Nora's mother surrendered.

The river finally became quiet.

Three weeks later, Daniel testified.

The Black River operation became one of the biggest corruption investigations the city had ever seen.

Lorenzo disappeared from the nightlife scene.

He sold the club.

Closed the VIP lounge.

And moved somewhere quieter.

Nora went with him.

One evening, they stood together beside the river.

She looked at him.

“When I ran into that lounge…”

“Yes?”

“I was terrified.”

“I know.”

“I didn't know you.”

“You still don't.”

She smiled faintly.

“No.”

She looked at his tattooed arm.

The same arm that had held her when she couldn't stand.

“But I knew one thing.”

“What?”

“I didn't want to go back.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“You don't have to.”

She stepped closer.

“What happens now?”

He took her hand.

“Now?”

“Yes.”

He looked at the river.

“Now we stop running.”

Nora smiled.

Then her phone buzzed.

She looked down.

One new message.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Daniel.

Standing beside a man everyone believed was dead.

Nora's smile vanished.

She turned the screen toward Lorenzo.

His face changed instantly.

The man in the photograph was his father.

Alive.

And the message beneath the picture contained only six words:

YOU CAUGHT THE WRONG MAN.

Lorenzo stared at the screen.

Nora whispered:

“It's not over.”

He looked toward the dark river.

“No.”

Then his phone began ringing.

And this time, the caller ID displayed a name they had both hoped never to see again.

VICTOR RAINES.
