Chapter 8 - THE MOTHER WHO NEVER DIEDDaniel couldn't move.

“You're Elena.”

“Yes.”

“Your son is alive.”

Elena covered her mouth.

A broken sob escaped.

“I know.”

“You knew?”

“He found you.”

Daniel's hand tightened around his flashlight.

“You left him on Highway 17?”

“I had no choice.”

“You abandoned a three-year-old child?”

“I saved him.”

Her voice cracked.

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

Elena looked toward the dark corridor.

“I disappeared three years ago because they were going to take Noah.”

“Who?”

“The people who bought children.”

“And you survived?”

“Barely.”

She explained.

After Noah was born, Elena discovered that the private adoption agency she had used for temporary childcare was connected to an illegal network.

Children were moved through medical facilities, foster placements, and private security companies.

Families paid enormous amounts.

Records were falsified.

Doctors were bribed.

Birth certificates were altered.

Parents were threatened.

When Elena tried to expose them, her home was broken into.

She fled with Noah.

But someone followed.

“I thought I could disappear,” she said.

“I changed names. I moved constantly. I kept Noah hidden.”

“Then how did the Mercers get him?”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Aaron Mercer was one of the buyers.”

Daniel went still.

“You knew him?”

“He wasn't Noah's father. He was the man assigned to keep Noah hidden.”

“And Melissa?”

“She was supposed to make the story look like a normal adoption.”

Daniel stared.

“Why would they abandon him on the highway?”

Elena's face crumpled.

“They didn't.”

Daniel understood.

“You did.”

She nodded.

“I had someone watching me. They were closing in. I couldn't get Noah to a safe house.”

“So you left him where police would find him.”

“Yes.”

“You could've called 911.”

“They were monitoring my phone.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You risked his life.”

“I risked everything.”

She reached into her coat.

A small flash drive appeared.

“On this is the evidence.”

“Names?”

“Names. Payments. Locations. Videos.”

“Where did you get it?”

“A man inside the network.”

“Who?”

Before Elena could answer, a gunshot cracked through the building.

She dropped.

Daniel caught her.

A bullet had struck the wall inches from her head.

“DOWN!”

Another shot.

Daniel pulled Elena behind a concrete pillar.

Footsteps thundered through the corridor.

Elena grabbed his arm.

“There's another exit.”

“Where?”

She pointed.

“The basement.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because the red door isn't the entrance.”

She swallowed.

“It's the trap.”

They ran.

Behind them, someone followed.

And as Daniel reached the basement stairs, his radio suddenly came alive.

A voice spoke through the static.

His own voice.

Recorded.

“Officer Cross, put the weapon down.”

Daniel froze.

Someone had hacked police communications.

May you like

The voice continued.

“Your department has already been compromised.”
