Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH ABOUT THE FIRST CHILDAaron finally broke.

“The chief's name is Victor Hale.”

Daniel had worked for him for seven years.

Promotions.

Commendations.

Training.

He had trusted him.

Now Hale was holding Eli hostage.

Aaron told the story.

Twenty years earlier, Victor Hale had been a police investigator working missing-child cases.

He discovered something.

Children from poor families were disappearing.

Cases were closed.

Records altered.

But Hale didn't stop the network.

He joined it.

He learned that wealthy families would pay almost anything for a child.

The organization created false identities, forged adoption records, and erased biological histories.

Over time, doctors, lawyers, police officers, judges, and businessmen became involved.

Adrian Voss was only a middleman.

Hale was the one who protected the operation.

“What about Elena?” Daniel asked.

Aaron looked down.

“She discovered the network.”

“And you?”

“I was assigned to take Noah.”

“You kidnapped him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Hale told me Elena was unstable.”

Daniel stared at him.

“And you believed him?”

“For a while.”

Aaron's voice shook.

“Then I saw what they were doing to the children.”

“So you helped Elena escape?”

“I tried.”

“But Noah vanished.”

“Hale found us.”

Aaron looked at Eli's file.

“He was supposed to be sold to a family overseas.”

Daniel clenched his fists.

“That was the plan?”

“Yes.”

“Why abandon him on the highway?”

“Because Elena got into the system and changed the route.”

Daniel looked at Lena.

“The system?”

“She hacked the transport database,” Lena said.

“She altered the destination.”

Aaron nodded.

“She told me one thing.”

“What?”

“Get Noah to Highway 17.”

“Why?”

“Because she knew someone would find him.”

Daniel realized.

Elena had trusted the one thing the network couldn't fully control.

Chance.

A police cruiser.

A stranger.

A child seen by someone who still cared.

Suddenly, the basement door above them opened.

Footsteps descended.

Victor Hale entered.

Eli stood beside him.

Hale held a gun against the boy's shoulder.

“Hello, Daniel.”

Daniel stared at his former chief.

“You killed Elena.”

“No.”

“You ordered it.”

“I ordered silence.”

“Same thing.”

Hale's expression remained cold.

“You were supposed to be a good officer.”

“I was.”

Hale smiled.

“You still can be.”

He placed a folder on the table.

Inside were Daniel's personnel records.

And one photograph.

Daniel as a child.

Standing beside a woman.

His mother.

A woman he had always believed died of natural causes.

Hale spoke softly.

“Your mother found the network too.”

Daniel's world stopped.

“You knew her?”

May you like

Hale smiled.

“She was our first whistleblower.”
