Chapter 2 - THE PHOTO THAT BROKE THE INTERNETAt County Medical Center, Dr. Rebecca Shaw examined Eli from head to toe.

The boy had bruises on both forearms.
Three scratches on his cheek.
A healing cut beneath his chin.
Dehydration.
Mild hypothermia.
And something stranger.
There were faint circular marks around both wrists.
“Rope?” Daniel asked.
Rebecca didn't answer immediately.
She carefully examined the skin.
“Could be from restraint.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Restraint?”
“I'm not saying that's what happened.”
“But you're thinking it.”
Rebecca looked at the sleeping child.
“Yes.”
At 8:03 a.m., police released a photograph.
The image showed Eli wrapped in a gray emergency blanket, sitting on a hospital bed with enormous dark eyes and a small bandage on his knee.
The caption was simple.
UNIDENTIFIED CHILD FOUND ON HIGHWAY 17.
By 10:20, the photograph had been shared thousands of times.
At 11:47, the first tip came in.
A woman named Sarah Bell claimed she recognized the child.
“I saw him on television last year,” she told investigators. “That boy looks like Noah Mercer.”
Police ran the name.
Noah Mercer.
Age three.
Reported missing nine months earlier.
Daniel felt the room go cold.
The missing-person file had been created in another county.
The original report named the parents as Aaron and Melissa Mercer.
A photograph of Noah was attached to the case.
The resemblance was unmistakable.
Same brown eyes.
Same round cheeks.
Same small scar near the left eyebrow.
Daniel stared at the old photograph.
Then at the child sleeping in the hospital.
It was the same boy.
At 12:16 p.m., detectives located the Mercer residence.
At 12:43, they contacted Aaron and Melissa.
Melissa screamed the moment she saw the photograph.
“That's Noah!”
Aaron was quieter.
Too quiet.
“Where is he?”
“At County Medical.”
“Is he alive?”
“Yes.”
Melissa collapsed into a chair.
Aaron covered his face with both hands.
For a brief moment, Daniel thought he was seeing a grieving father.
Then Aaron lowered his hands.
His expression was almost unreadable.
“When can we get him?”
“After verification,” Detective Lena Ruiz said.
“I’m his father.”
“We understand.”
“No,” Aaron said. “You don't.”
He stood.
“I've spent nine months looking for my son.”
Daniel studied him carefully.
“Then you'll understand why we need to make sure he's safe.”
Aaron nodded.
But he looked away.
By 3:00 p.m., DNA samples had been collected.
The test was expedited.
At 4:18, Melissa arrived at the hospital with photographs.
A birthday picture.
A Christmas picture.
A beach photo.
In every image, Noah smiled beside her.
Daniel watched her flip through them.
“He loves dinosaurs,” she whispered.
“He likes the green ones?”
Melissa froze.
“How do you know?”
“Eli told one of the nurses.”
A faint smile appeared on her face.
“My boy.”
Then Eli woke.
His eyes opened.
He saw Melissa.
His face transformed.
Not into relief.
Into terror.
The toddler screamed.
“No!”
Melissa stepped closer.
“Noah, baby.”
The boy scrambled backward so violently he nearly fell from the bed.
“No! No! No!”
Daniel caught him.
Eli clung to Daniel's uniform.
Melissa began crying.
Aaron stood in the doorway.
He didn't react.
That was what frightened Daniel most.
Then Eli looked over Daniel's shoulder.
His eyes locked onto Aaron.
And he whispered four words.
May you like
“That's the man.”
Aaron went completely still.
