Chapter 8 - THE ROOM UNDER THE VINEYARDWe didn't go alone.

Diana brought twelve agents.

We entered Sterling Ridge through a concealed tunnel beneath the old vineyard cellar.

The air was cold.

Concrete walls.

Electrical cables.

No windows.

The tunnel ended at a steel door.

Behind it was a room the Sterling family had hidden for years.

Servers covered one wall.

Monitors covered another.

Financial records filled metal cabinets.

There were photographs everywhere.

Politicians.

Business leaders.

Judges.

Prosecutors.

Bank executives.

And families.

Dozens of families.

I walked slowly.

“What is this?”

Diana stared at the screens.

“A control room.”

“For what?”

She opened a file.

“Financial blackmail.”

Everything suddenly made sense.

The Sterling family wasn't simply laundering money.

They were collecting information.

Secrets.

Debts.

Bribes.

Affairs.

Threats.

Every compromise became leverage.

Every victim became an asset.

I touched a monitor.

A folder was open.

Haines.

Another.

Sterling.

Another.

Cruz.

Diana froze.

Her own name.

I looked at her.

She opened the file.

It contained information about her family.

Home.

Education.

Financial accounts.

Travel records.

Even private photographs.

“How long have they been watching you?”

She didn't answer.

Then another file appeared.

AUDREY STERLING.

My entire life was there.

My childhood.

My school.

My first job.

My father's business.

My marriage.

Everything.

But one document stood out.

SUBJECT CONNECTION: FATHER

I opened it.

The first line read:

Thomas Bennett is not merely Audrey's father.

The second line:

He is the original architect.

I stared.

“No.”

Diana read it.

“What does that mean?”

The lights suddenly turned red.

A voice came over the speaker.

“Welcome home, Audrey.”

I froze.

I knew the voice.

Julian.

A door at the far end opened.

He stepped into the room.

No suit.

No tie.

No security.

Just a black shirt and exhausted eyes.

Diana raised her weapon.

“Hands where I can see them.”

Julian obeyed.

“Audrey…”

“Don't.”

He stopped.

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You used me.”

“Yes.”

“You signed those transfers.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I was investigating.”

“Yes.”

My voice broke.

“Did you marry me because of my father?”

Julian looked at the floor.

Finally:

“Yes.”

Pain shot through me.

“Why?”

“Because your father built Blackthorne.”

I couldn't speak.

“He wasn't just an investor,” Julian continued. “He was one of the people who designed the entire network.”

My world shifted.

“You're lying.”

“He recruited my family twenty years ago.”

“And then?”

“Your father disappeared when you were young.”

I stared at him.

“He didn't disappear.”

Julian's eyes met mine.

“He changed names.”

A voice came from behind me.

“Audrey.”

I turned.

My father stepped from the shadows.

Older.

Tired.

Alive.

My mouth opened.

“Dad?”

He looked at Julian.

Then at me.

“I’m sorry.”

Diana raised her weapon again.

“Don't move.”

My father didn't.

He simply looked at me.

“You were never supposed to find this room.”

I felt tears rise.

“Why?”

“Because everything I built was supposed to die with me.”

“Then why did you let me marry Julian?”

My father closed his eyes.

“Because I believed I could control him.”

Julian laughed bitterly.

“You couldn't.”

My father looked at him.

“No.”

Then he looked at me.

“That was my biggest mistake.”

A distant alarm sounded.

Diana's agents shouted from the tunnel.

Someone was approaching.

Dozens of footsteps.

My father turned pale.

“They found us.”

“Who?”

He looked at me.

May you like

“The people who own Blackthorne.”

Then the steel door at the far end began to shake.
