Chapter 12 - THE FATHER WHO BUILT THE MONSTERI stared at the phone.

Diana stared at me.
“Why would your father say that?”
“I don't know.”
She stepped closer.
“Audrey, listen to me.”
“I am listening.”
“Your father is compromised.”
“Maybe.”
“You cannot trust him.”
“Maybe I can't trust you either.”
Diana's face fell.
“That isn't fair.”
“Neither was my marriage.”
Silence.
Then she said:
“Come with me.”
We drove to my father's house under federal escort.
The basement wall was behind a bookshelf.
We moved it.
A hidden compartment appeared.
Inside was a metal box.
My father arrived ten minutes later.
He saw the box.
“You found it.”
“What is it?”
“The ledger.”
“Why didn't you destroy it?”
“Because destruction is not the same as disappearance.”
I opened the box.
Inside was a handwritten ledger.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
Locations.
Every transaction Blackthorne had ever made.
But the final pages were missing.
“Where are the rest?”
My father looked at me.
“Julian has them.”
I stared.
“How?”
“He took them before the wedding.”
“Why?”
“To protect himself.”
“From who?”
My father didn't answer.
“Dad.”
He finally said:
“Blackthorne isn't controlled by Haines.”
“Then who?”
He looked at the floor.
“The founder.”
“You're the founder.”
“No.”
My heart stopped.
“Then who?”
He whispered one name.
“Eleanor.”
I shook my head.
“That's impossible.”
“She was never simply the wife of Sterling Ridge.”
My father's eyes filled with regret.
“She built the network.”
My entire relationship with Eleanor flashed through my mind.
Her coldness.
Her obsession with control.
Her fear of scandal.
Her strange knowledge of financial details she should never have known.
She had always been the real power.
My father continued:
“Julian wasn't the heir.”
“He was the shield.”
“And Seraphina?”
“The public face.”
I stared at him.
“And me?”
He looked at me.
“You were the exit plan.”
“What?”
“You were the only person with the expertise to dismantle Blackthorne from inside.”
I stepped backward.
“You married me into this family on purpose.”
“I believed I could protect you.”
“You used me.”
“Yes.”
I closed my eyes.
For years, I had believed my father was the safest person in my life.
Now he was another architect of the cage.
My phone vibrated.
Seraphina.
A video.
My son.
Still alive.
Still sleeping.
Then Eleanor appeared in the frame.
My mother-in-law looked directly into the camera.
“Audrey.”
I clenched my jaw.
“Bring me the ledger.”
“You could have killed me.”
“I could have.”
“But you didn't.”
“Because you are more valuable alive.”
“What do you want?”
“The same thing your father wanted twenty years ago.”
“What?”
“A clean escape.”
She smiled.
“Tonight, Blackthorne disappears.”
“How?”
“By becoming your crime.”
She lifted a document.
A confession.
My confession.
Forged.
Signed electronically.
Everything traced to my name.
“If this document reaches the federal court, you're finished.”
I looked at my father.
Then at Diana.
Diana whispered:
“She needs the ledger because it proves the confession is false.”
Eleanor smiled from the screen.
“You have until midnight.”
The call ended.
I looked at the clock.
8:17 p.m.
Less than four hours.
Then one of the agents ran inside.
“We found Julian.”
“Where?”
“Outside the city.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Bring him here.”
The agent hesitated.
“He was found with something.”
“What?”
“A USB drive.”
I looked at the ledger.
Then at the empty final pages.
Suddenly I understood.
The missing pages.
The USB.
Julian had them.
And whatever they contained could destroy every person in Blackthorne.
Including Eleanor.
May you like
Including my father.
And possibly me.
