Chapter 13 - THE USB DRIVEJulian arrived under armed escort.

He looked different.
Older.
Broken.
He had blood on his shirt.
Not all of it was his.
I didn't move.
He held out the USB drive.
“This is everything.”
“What is everything?”
“The original ledger.”
“You stole it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew Mother would kill me once she realized I had it.”
“You knew she kidnapped our son?”
His expression collapsed.
“She told me.”
I walked toward him.
“You knew?”
“I found out after the wedding.”
“And you still did nothing.”
“I tried.”
“You ran.”
“Yes.”
I slapped him.
The room went silent.
Julian didn't react.
He simply accepted it.
“You deserve worse,” I said.
“I know.”
Diana took the USB drive.
“We're going to analyze it.”
Julian stopped her.
“You need to know what's inside.”
“What?”
“Names.”
“Whose names?”
“Everyone.”
He looked at me.
“Governors.”
“Judges.”
“Bank presidents.”
“Police officials.”
“Federal agents.”
“And your father.”
I looked at my father.
He said nothing.
The USB contained recordings.
Messages.
Signed documents.
Payment instructions.
Threats.
Blackmail.
Everything.
But there was one folder labeled:
ORIGIN
We opened it.
A video.
Twenty years old.
Eleanor sat in front of the camera.
Young.
Elegant.
Cold.
Beside her was my father.
They discussed Blackthorne.
But there was another person in the room.
A woman I didn't recognize.
Then Eleanor said:
“Her daughter will be useful.”
My blood froze.
My father said:
“She must never know.”
Eleanor smiled.
“She won't.”
I stared at the screen.
“That was before I met Julian.”
Diana looked at me.
“No.”
We watched.
Eleanor continued.
“Once Audrey becomes a forensic auditor, we'll place her where we need her.”
My stomach twisted.
“My career.”
My father lowered his head.
“They planned my career.”
“They created my life.”
Diana whispered:
“This wasn't accidental.”
No.
It wasn't.
Every step had been arranged.
My education.
My job placement.
My marriage.
The financial investigation.
Everything.
I had thought I was uncovering Blackthorne.
Blackthorne had been guiding me toward the evidence.
Then I understood why.
They needed one person they could blame.
Me.
The final file contained a recorded conversation between Eleanor and Haines.
Haines asked:
“What if she finds the truth?”
Eleanor answered:
“Then we remove her.”
“And the baby?”
“He will carry the assets.”
My hands trembled.
The plan had begun before my son was born.
The five million-dollar trust wasn't improvisation.
It was preparation.
Diana turned toward the agents.
“Get the warrants ready.”
I stopped her.
“No.”
She looked at me.
“What?”
“Don't arrest Eleanor yet.”
“Why?”
“Because she thinks she controls the final move.”
“And?”
“I want her to make it.”
Diana stared.
“You want to bait her?”
“Yes.”
Julian looked at me.
“Audrey…”
“What?”
“You don't understand what she's capable of.”
I looked at him.
“I understand now.”
My phone rang.
Eleanor.
I answered.
“Do you have the ledger?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
“Where is my son?”
“Come to Sterling Ridge.”
“Alone?”
“Yes.”
I smiled.
“You always loved controlling the room.”
Her voice sharpened.
“What did you say?”
“I said I'll come.”
The line ended.
Diana looked at me.
“What’s the plan?”
I closed the USB drive in my hand.
“We give Eleanor the ledger.”
May you like
“And then?”
“We let her confess.”
