Chapter 8 - The Son Who Lied About His FatherThe secret Michael carried to his grave

Claire sat down again.

“Michael knew what Evan was becoming.”

Evan shook his head.

“Stop blaming me for everything.”

Claire looked at him.

“I was there the night your father made his final decision.”

“What decision?”

“To remove you from direct control of the estate.”

“But why?”

“Because he discovered you were working with Marissa’s family.”

Evan’s eyes flickered.

Marissa immediately stood.

“Don't.”

Claire ignored her.

“Her father had been involved in fraudulent investment schemes.”

Marissa whispered:

“My father is dead.”

“He was alive when the scheme began.”

I looked at Evan.

“You knew?”

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The answer broke something inside me.

“Did Michael know?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he keep you in his life?”

Evan laughed bitterly.

“Because he thought he could save me.”

I thought of the terrified little boy with the blue mug.

The man standing before me seemed like a stranger.

Claire opened another folder.

Michael’s final letter.

He had written it two days before his death.

Evan has one last chance.

He must choose between the family and the money.

If he chooses money, Helen must be protected at all costs.

Tears filled my eyes.

Michael had known.

Maybe not every detail.

But enough.

Then Arnold read the next paragraph.

The real danger is not Evan. It is the person directing him.

I looked at Marissa.

She went still.

“No,” she whispered.

Arnold turned the page.

There was a name.

Richard Vale.

The accountant.

The man from the photograph.

The man who had been meeting Evan outside my house.

The man whose company received Marissa’s transfers.

The detective immediately picked up his phone.

“Where is Richard Vale now?”

Claire answered.

“Probably where he always is.”

“Where?”

“The old hotel downtown.”

We drove there in separate cars.

Police went first.

When we entered the hotel suite, Richard was gone.

But someone had left a file open on the desk.

Inside were photographs of me.

My house.

My car.

My routine.

My doctor.

My bank.

My attorney.

I looked at the photographs and realized something horrifying.

They had been watching me for years.

Then we found a second folder.

It contained medical reports.

Several were blank.

Others had my name typed at the top.

Diagnosis:

Cognitive decline.

I stared at the words.

“They planned to fabricate my medical record.”

The detective nodded.

“This may be enough for criminal charges.”

Arnold opened another file.

Then he froze.

“Helen.”

“What?”

He handed me a document.

It was dated one week before my husband died.

A list of beneficiaries.

My name had been crossed out.

Evan’s name had been crossed out.

And below them was a new name.

Samuel Carter.

“Who is Samuel?” I asked.

Claire looked at me.

“You don't know?”

“No.”

Claire took a breath.

“Michael had another son.”

The room became silent.

My husband had another child.

A son I had never heard of.

Evan stared at Claire.

“You're lying.”

“No.”

“Why didn't Dad tell me?”

“Because he was afraid of what you would do.”

“Where is he?”

Claire hesitated.

“Dead.”

Evan exhaled.

But Claire continued.

“His daughter is alive.”

I looked at her.

“His granddaughter?”

Claire nodded.

“Ava.”

My heart began pounding.

“Where is she?”

Claire handed me an address.

“She is twenty-four years old.”

I stared at the paper.

“Does she know who I am?”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

The detective stepped closer.

“Then we should be careful.”

I looked down at the address.

All this time, I had thought Evan was the only child Michael had ever loved.

All this time, my husband had left behind another branch of the family.

And suddenly I understood the hidden purpose of the trust.

Maybe Michael hadn't built it for Evan.

Maybe he had built it to protect someone Evan did not know existed.

Someone who could inherit everything.

I looked at Arnold.

“Find her.”

“Why?”

“Because I want to meet my husband’s granddaughter.”

Then my phone buzzed.

A text from an unknown number.

You should not find Ava.

May you like

A second message followed.

Because she knows what happened to Michael.
