Chapter 11 - The Meeting That Broke EvanThe truth about Michael’s final night

Evan agreed to meet us.
Not at my house.
Not at Arnold's office.
At the old chapel where Michael's funeral had been held.
The irony was almost unbearable.
Rain tapped against the stone windows as Evan walked inside.
He looked exhausted.
Older than his thirty-nine years.
“I was there,” he said.
No one spoke.
“I came to Dad’s office that night.”
“Why?”
“He caught me.”
“Doing what?”
“Taking documents.”
Arnold stepped forward.
“What documents?”
“The trust papers.”
My heart tightened.
“Why?”
“Richard told me they were worth millions.”
Ava stared at him.
“You knew about me.”
Evan looked at her.
“I found your mother’s records.”
“Why didn't you tell anyone?”
“Because Richard said if I did, I'd lose everything.”
Claire whispered:
“Everything you never owned.”
Evan closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
I asked the question I had feared.
“Did you hurt your father?”
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
“I swear.”
“Then who did?”
He looked at the floor.
“Richard.”
Silence.
“Richard came into the office after me.”
Evan's voice cracked.
“Dad and I were fighting.”
“What did you say?”
“I told him I deserved the money.”
“And he said?”
“He told me I was confusing inheritance with entitlement.”
I almost smiled sadly.
That sounded exactly like Michael.
Evan continued.
“Richard attacked him.”
“Why?”
“Dad had evidence against him.”
“What evidence?”
Evan looked at Ava.
“Money laundering.”
The detective nodded.
“We already suspected.”
Evan swallowed.
“I saw Richard push Dad.”
“Did your father die then?”
“No.”
“What happened?”
“He was still alive.”
My body went cold.
“Then why did you leave?”
Evan looked at me.
“Because Richard threatened me.”
“With what?”
“He said if I stayed, I'd go down for everything.”
“So you left your father there?”
“Yes.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
He broke down.
“I thought someone would find him.”
“Someone?”
“The night security guard.”
Arnold frowned.
“Michael's office security was disabled that night.”
Evan looked at him.
“I know.”
The detective stepped forward.
“Who disabled it?”
Evan whispered:
“Marissa.”
Marissa's name seemed to echo in the chapel.
“She wasn't supposed to be involved,” Evan said.
“She was involved from the beginning,” Claire replied.
Evan looked at her.
“I know.”
Then he turned to me.
“I never wanted you in the nursing home.”
I said nothing.
“I only wanted the house.”
“And the trust?”
“I wanted the money too.”
The honesty was almost worse than the lies.
“Why?”
“Because Richard told me you would die rich and I would get nothing.”
I looked at him.
“You had a home.”
“It wasn't enough.”
“You had my love.”
“I thought love didn't matter without money.”
The sentence hung in the air.
Then the detective asked:
“What happened to Michael after you left?”
Evan shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Claire spoke quietly.
“I do.”
Everyone turned toward her.
“Michael was alive for another forty minutes.”
My heart stopped.
“How do you know?”
“Because he called me.”
Ava stepped forward.
“You never told me.”
“I promised Michael.”
She looked at me.
“He knew the end was coming.”
I started to cry.
“What did he say?”
Claire’s voice trembled.
“He said, ‘Take care of Helen.’”
I covered my mouth.
Then Claire said:
“He also said something else.”
“What?”
“Tell Evan I forgive him.”
Evan collapsed into a chair.
For several seconds, he could not speak.
Then he whispered:
“I don't deserve that.”
“No,” I said softly.
“You don't.”
He looked up.
“But Dad did.”
That night, Evan signed a sworn statement.
Names.
Transfers.
Dates.
Everything.
The detective took it.
And as we left the chapel, Evan called after me.
“Helen.”
I turned.
He held out a small key.
“I found this in Dad’s office.”
“What does it open?”
“I don't know.”
Ava stepped closer.
She looked at the key.
May you like
Then her face went white.
“It opens the vault.”
