Chapter 13 - The Heir They Never ExpectedThe last person Richard thought could defeat him

Everything happened at once.

Richard locked the door.

Marissa backed toward the kitchen.

Evan froze.

The detective, who had been following us from a distance, was still outside.

I looked at Richard.

“You killed Michael.”

Richard smiled.

“Your husband was going to ruin everything.”

“You manipulated Evan.”

“I gave him what he wanted.”

Evan said:

“You used me.”

Richard laughed.

“You let me.”

Marissa stared at Richard.

“You promised we'd leave.”

“We will.”

“What about my son?”

Richard looked at the baby.

“He is leverage.”

Something changed in Marissa’s face.

For the first time, she looked at her own child.

Not as a prop.

Not as a bargaining chip.

As her son.

She moved instinctively away from Richard.

He raised the gun.

“Don't.”

I stepped between them.

“You don't want the baby.”

Richard frowned.

“You want the trust.”

He looked at me.

“Yes.”

“Then you don't need him.”

“That depends.”

I reached into my coat.

“I brought something better.”

I placed a flash drive on the table.

Richard stared.

“What is that?”

“Every document from the vault.”

His smile vanished.

“The original evidence.”

“You don't have copies.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“I have the originals.”

“No.”

I pointed toward the drive.

“You have what you think is the only evidence.”

Then I smiled.

“This contains everything.”

The truth was simple.

It was not a bluff.

Arnold had already distributed copies to three law firms and law enforcement.

Richard's entire operation was gone.

He knew it.

His hand tightened around the gun.

“You think you're clever.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“I think you're trapped.”

Suddenly, Marissa shoved the kitchen table.

It crashed into Richard.

The detective burst through the door.

Richard raised the gun.

Evan grabbed Marissa.

I pulled the baby away.

A shot exploded through the room.

Glass shattered.

Then silence.

Richard dropped to the floor.

The detective handcuffed him.

Marissa collapsed beside the wall, sobbing.

Evan stood motionless.

I held my grandson.

He was crying.

I rocked him.

“It’s all right.”

He quieted.

Just slightly.

Then Evan came toward me.

“I don't deserve him.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He nodded.

“But he deserves you.”

I handed the baby to him.

For several seconds, he held his son.

He looked terrified.

Just like the little boy who once crawled into my bed during thunderstorms.

I suddenly understood something.

Maybe Evan had not completely disappeared.

Maybe somewhere under all the greed, fear, and manipulation, the boy with the blue mug still existed.

But I could not save him for him.

Only he could do that.

The detective walked over.

“Marissa, you're under arrest.”

She looked at me.

“I'm sorry.”

The apology came too late.

But it was the first honest thing she had ever given me.

Before she was taken away, she stopped.

“Mrs. Carter.”

I looked at her.

“There is something you don't know.”

My heart sank.

“What?”

She glanced at Evan.

Then whispered:

“Richard never killed your husband.”

The detective paused.

“What?”

Marissa swallowed.

“Your husband survived the attack.”

I stared at her.

“Then how did he die?”

Marissa shook her head.

“Someone else entered the office after Richard left.”

“Who?”

She looked at me.

“You.”

My blood ran cold.

“That night, you went to see Michael.”

I shook my head.

“I never did.”

Marissa closed her eyes.

“You did.”

May you like

Then she whispered:

“You just don't remember.”
