Chapter 8: The Brother Hidden From The World

The television screen flickered.
The man’s face remained visible.
A face Michael had never expected to see.
A face that belonged to a stranger.
Yet somehow…
It carried pieces of him.
The same eyes.
The same sharp jawline.
The same expression when anger was buried beneath silence.
Michael stood motionless.
“Thomas…”
The name felt strange leaving his mouth.
Like speaking a word from a forgotten language.
Sarah looked at him.
“Michael, who is he?”
Michael didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t have an answer.
Not one that made sense.
Thomas smiled from the screen.
“You look confused.”
Michael stepped closer.
“Because you’re supposed to be dead.”
The smile disappeared.
For the first time, Thomas looked serious.
“That’s the story they gave you.”
The room became colder.
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
Thomas leaned toward the camera.
“You were six years old when they told you I died.”
Michael’s breathing changed.
A memory appeared.
A hospital hallway.
His mother crying.
His father standing silently.
A funeral.
A small black box.
A child trying to understand why someone would never come home again.
“You weren’t supposed to remember me.”
Michael’s face tightened.
“What does that mean?”
Thomas looked away briefly.
“It means our father made sure you forgot.”
Sarah stepped closer.
“Your father erased your memories?”
Thomas looked at her.
“Not completely.”
A pause.
“Just enough.”
Daniel frowned.
“Memory manipulation?”
Thomas smiled slightly.
“You’re smarter than Michael’s old friends.”
Michael ignored the comment.
“Why?”
Thomas looked back at him.
“Because I found out what our father was doing.”
The words echoed.
“Our father.”
Michael clenched his fists.
“My father was Robert Carter.”
“Yes.”
“And he had another son?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t I know?”
Thomas’s expression changed.
“Because he didn’t want you to.”
The screen went dark for a second.
Then another image appeared.
A photograph.
Two children standing beside a man.
A young Michael.
And a boy slightly older.
Thomas.
Michael stared.
He remembered the photograph.
But not the boy.
Not Thomas.
His mind felt like it was fighting itself.
“That’s impossible.”
Thomas spoke softly.
“It’s not.”
Michael looked at the screen.
“Where were you?”
Thomas’s expression became cold.
“Hidden.”
“By who?”
Thomas answered immediately.
“By our father.”
Silence.
Sarah looked at Michael.
“He had another child and hid him?”
Michael shook his head.
“I don’t understand.”
Thomas laughed quietly.
“You never did.”
The words hurt.
But they sounded true.
“Michael, our father didn’t see us as sons.”
A pause.
“He saw us as assets.”
Daniel looked at the screen.
“Project Second Chance.”
Thomas nodded.
“Exactly.”
Michael stared.
“What was it?”
Thomas leaned back.
“The project was designed to create perfect replacements.”
Everyone remained silent.
“Replacements for what?”
“For people.”
Michael frowned.
Thomas continued.
“Northbridge discovered that controlling information was more powerful than controlling weapons.”
A pause.
“If you can change records, memories, identities…”
His voice became darker.
“You can change reality.”
Sarah held Noah closer.
Michael looked at his son.
Then back at the screen.
“Why involve me?”
Thomas smiled.
“Because you were the successful one.”
Michael froze.
“What?”
“Our father tested on both of us.”
The room went silent.
“He trained me to control people.”
A pause.
“He trained you to understand them.”
Michael remembered.
His years studying behavior.
Reading people.
Predicting actions.
Finding anyone.
“You were the tracker.”
Thomas nodded.
“And you were the key.”
Michael felt sick.
“No.”
“Yes.”
Thomas looked directly into the camera.
“You were the only person who could locate someone without them realizing they were being found.”
Daniel looked at Michael.
“That’s why Northbridge valued you.”
Michael didn’t respond.
Because he suddenly understood.
His talent.
His career.
His success.
None of it was accidental.
Someone had built him for it.
Thomas continued.
“Then you ruined everything.”
Michael looked at him.
“By helping Elena?”
“Yes.”
“You’re angry because I saved someone?”
Thomas laughed.
“No.”
His expression became serious.
“I’m angry because you left me.”
The words hit harder than expected.
Michael froze.
“What?”
Thomas looked away.
“For years, I believed you knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That I was alive.”
Michael stepped back.
“No.”
“I thought you chose to leave me behind.”
Thomas’s voice cracked slightly.
Only for a moment.
Then the anger returned.
“Our father told me you abandoned me.”
Michael shook his head.
“I never knew you existed.”
“I know that now.”
A pause.
“But for years, I hated you.”
The confession filled the room.
Sarah looked at Michael.
“Is he telling the truth?”
Michael looked broken.
“I don’t know.”
Thomas smiled sadly.
“That’s the problem, Michael.”
He looked at him.
“You never knew the truth.”
The screen suddenly changed.
A countdown appeared.
05:00
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“What is that?”
Thomas answered.
“A reminder.”
Michael stared.
“Of what?”
“That you’re running out of time.”
The countdown continued.
04:59.
04:58.
Michael’s voice became angry.
“Where is Elena?”
Thomas didn’t answer.
“Thomas!”
The man on screen looked at him.
“She’s at the warehouse.”
Michael froze.
“You know?”
“Yes.”
“Then why aren’t you there?”
Thomas smiled.
“Because I wanted you to understand something first.”
“What?”
Thomas looked toward Noah.
Everyone noticed.
Michael immediately stepped in front of his son.
Thomas saw the reaction.
“Relax.”
His voice softened.
“I’m not interested in hurting him.”
“Then what do you want?”
Thomas stared at Michael.
“The same thing I wanted twelve years ago.”
“What?”
“The truth.”
Michael frowned.
“You’re the one threatening my family.”
Thomas shook his head.
“No.”
A pause.
“I’m the one trying to stop the person who is.”
Michael looked confused.
“Then who?”
Thomas became silent.
For the first time, fear appeared in his eyes.
Not anger.
Not confidence.
Fear.
“Someone else has been controlling this game.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?”
Thomas looked directly at Michael.
“Someone who knew about Project Second Chance before any of us.”
The countdown reached:
03:00.
Thomas continued.
“Someone who survived because your father protected them.”
Michael felt a chill.
“My father protected someone?”
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Thomas looked at him.
Then said the name.
A name that made Victor Hale, standing silently in the room, suddenly turn pale.
“Robert Carter’s first experiment.”
Everyone looked at Victor.
Michael noticed.
“You know who?”
Victor didn’t answer.
Michael stepped toward him.
“Victor.”
The former operative remained silent.
Then, finally…
He whispered:
“I thought he was dead.”
Michael’s heart sank.
“Who?”
Victor looked at the television.
At Thomas.
Then said:
“Your mother.”
The world stopped.
Sarah gasped.
Michael stared.
“My mother died when I was a child.”
Victor nodded slowly.
“That’s what you were told.”
The countdown continued.
02:00.
Michael felt like his entire life was collapsing.
His father.
His brother.
His mother.
Every memory.
Every truth.
Everything he believed about his family…
Was a carefully constructed story.
Thomas looked at him through the screen.
“Michael.”
His voice became softer.
“You spent your whole life searching for other people’s secrets.”
A pause.
“But you never searched for your own.”
The screen went black.
The countdown disappeared.
Then one final message appeared.
FIND THE TRUTH BEFORE THEY FIND YOU.
Nobody spoke.
Because for the first time…
Michael realized the enemy wasn’t trying to destroy his family.
They were forcing him to uncover it.
The real question was no longer:
Who was watching them?
The real question was:
May you like
What had Robert Carter done to his own family?
