Chapter 7: The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The figure across the street lowered their hand.
The wave lasted only a few seconds.
But those seconds felt longer than years.
Michael stood frozen beside the window.
His mind was racing.
The black SUV.
The hidden cameras.
The threats.
The person who had been controlling everything from the shadows.
And now…
Someone had finally stepped into the light.
“Who is that?” Sarah whispered.
Michael didn’t answer.
Because he couldn’t.
The person outside was too far away to see clearly.
But there was something familiar.
The way they stood.
The confidence.
The calmness.
Like they knew Michael would be watching.
Daniel moved away from the window.
“Everyone away from the glass.”
His voice was serious.
Michael immediately grabbed Noah.
“Come on.”
They moved deeper into the house.
Victor remained near the window.
Watching.
“You shouldn’t have come here.”
Michael looked at him.
“What?”
Victor didn’t turn around.
“You should have taken your family and run.”
Michael’s expression hardened.
“You’re the one who brought me the information.”
“Yes.”
“Then don’t tell me to run.”
Victor finally looked at him.
“Because you don’t understand what you’re walking into.”
Michael stepped closer.
“No.”
His voice was calm.
“I spent twelve years running.”
A pause.
“I’m done.”
For the first time, Victor looked at him differently.
Almost like he respected the answer.
Almost.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Daniel checked the screen.
His face changed.
“It’s Elena.”
Michael felt his entire body go still.
Sarah noticed.
“Who is Elena?”
Michael looked at her.
“The woman from the file.”
Daniel answered the call.
A woman’s voice came through.
“Is Michael there?”
Michael stepped forward.
“I’m here.”
Silence.
Then a shaky breath.
“Michael Carter.”
Hearing his name from her mouth felt impossible.
“Where are you?”
The woman didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“You shouldn’t have opened the archive.”
Michael looked at Victor.
“You knew this would happen?”
Victor remained silent.
Michael focused on the call.
“Elena, tell me what’s going on.”
Her voice became urgent.
“You need to leave that house.”
Michael looked toward the windows.
“They already found us.”
“No.”
The fear in her voice was different.
“They found you because you opened the file.”
Michael frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“It means they know you know.”
Michael tightened his grip on the phone.
“Who are they?”
Another silence.
Then Elena answered:
“The people who killed your father.”
Michael froze.
“My father died of a heart attack.”
“No.”
The answer was immediate.
“He was murdered.”
The room went silent.
Sarah looked at Michael.
Daniel stopped moving.
Even Victor’s expression changed slightly.
Michael’s voice became quieter.
“What did you say?”
“I said your father was murdered.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Is it?”
Elena’s voice softened.
“Michael, your father spent years hiding things from you.”
Michael looked at Victor.
Then at the files.
Then back at the phone.
“What happened to him?”
“He discovered something.”
“What?”
“A project.”
Michael’s eyes narrowed.
“Project Second Chance.”
Elena went silent.
“You saw it.”
“Yes.”
Another pause.
“Then you know why they’re afraid.”
Michael looked confused.
“Why?”
“Because your father didn’t create it.”
A chill moved through the room.
“Then who did?”
Elena whispered:
“You.”
Michael stared.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“That’s impossible.”
“You were part of it before you even knew.”
Sarah stepped closer.
“What is she talking about?”
Michael couldn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
Elena continued.
“Your father used your skills. Your access. Your knowledge.”
Michael shook his head.
“My father never involved me in anything like that.”
“Michael.”
Her voice became serious.
“You spent four years finding people.”
“Yes.”
“You thought you were helping companies locate missing individuals.”
“Yes.”
“But what if some of those people were never missing?”
Michael felt his stomach drop.
“What?”
Elena continued.
“Northbridge didn’t just find people.”
A pause.
“They tested ways to manipulate information.”
Michael remembered the files.
The threats.
The manufactured stories.
“They created false identities.”
“Yes.”
“They erased records.”
“Yes.”
“They controlled people.”
“Yes.”
Michael stepped back.
Everything he believed about his past was breaking apart.
His career.
His father.
His entire understanding of himself.
“No…”
Sarah grabbed his arm.
“Michael.”
He looked at her.
His eyes were filled with confusion.
“I thought I was helping people.”
Elena’s voice softened.
“I know.”
That hurt more.
Because she believed him.
“You weren’t the villain, Michael.”
A pause.
“But you were the tool.”
The words cut deeply.
Michael closed his eyes.
For years, he had feared becoming his father.
Now he wondered if he had already become him without knowing.
Then a sound interrupted the call.
A loud impact.
Like something hitting metal.
“Elena?”
No response.
“Elena!”
Static.
Then her voice returned.
Barely audible.
“They’re here.”
Michael immediately stood.
“Where are you?”
“I sent you the location.”
Daniel checked his phone.
A message appeared.
An address.
Michael recognized it.
An abandoned warehouse on the edge of the city.
Elena continued:
“You need to come before they get to me.”
Michael looked at Victor.
“You knew where she was.”
Victor nodded.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because you weren’t ready.”
Michael stepped toward him.
“You don’t get to decide that.”
Victor looked back.
“I know.”
A rare moment of honesty.
Then the lights suddenly returned.
Everyone froze.
The house was silent.
Too silent.
Daniel checked outside.
The black SUV was gone.
Michael frowned.
“They left.”
Victor shook his head.
“No.”
“Then where are they?”
Victor looked toward the ceiling.
And slowly pointed upward.
Everyone followed his gaze.
A small red light blinked near the corner.
A camera.
Inside their house.
Sarah covered her mouth.
“No…”
Victor spoke quietly.
“They were never outside.”
Michael looked around.
His blood ran cold.
“They were already here.”
The camera light suddenly turned off.
Then the television in the living room turned on by itself.
A video appeared.
A man sitting in a dark room.
His face hidden.
Michael immediately recognized the voice.
The same voice from the messages.
The same person controlling everything.
“Hello, Michael.”
Everyone froze.
The man continued.
“I’ve waited a long time for you to finally open the door.”
Michael stepped closer to the screen.
“Who are you?”
A quiet laugh.
“You really don’t recognize me?”
The man leaned slightly toward the camera.
The light revealed part of his face.
Michael’s eyes widened.
Because he knew him.
Not from Northbridge.
Not from his past.
From his childhood.
A person who should have been gone.
A person whose death changed Michael’s entire family.
The man smiled.
“Hello, little brother.”
Michael stopped breathing.
Sarah looked at him.
“Little brother?”
Michael whispered the name.
A name he hadn’t spoken in decades.
“Thomas…”
The man on the screen smiled.
“I knew you would remember.”
The room became completely silent.
Because Michael had spent his entire life believing he was an only child.
But the person controlling everything…
May you like
Was the brother he never knew existed.
