Chapter 4: The Man Who Came Back From the Dead

The name hung in the air.

Victor Hale.

Sarah repeated it quietly.

“Victor…”

Michael didn’t answer.

He stood there staring at the photograph, but his mind was no longer in the living room.

He was somewhere else.

Twelve years ago.

A different city.

A different life.

A version of himself he had tried desperately to bury.

Daniel noticed the change in his face.

“You really thought he was dead?”

Michael slowly nodded.

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Michael placed the photograph on the table.

“Victor Hale was the best operative Northbridge ever had.”

Sarah looked confused.

“Operative?”

Michael looked at her.

“Not investigator. Not security.”

He paused.

“Operative.”

The word carried a different weight.

A dangerous one.

“Victor handled the cases nobody wanted to talk about. He was the person they called when someone needed to disappear.”

Sarah’s face turned pale.

“And you worked with him?”

Michael looked down.

“Yes.”

“How close were you?”

Michael didn’t answer immediately.

Because the truth was complicated.

“Too close.”

Daniel crossed his arms.

“What happened between you two?”

Michael walked toward the couch and sat down.

For the first time, he looked tired.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“Victor wasn’t always like that.”

Sarah sat across from him.

“What do you mean?”

“When I first met him, he was different.”

Michael looked at the old photograph.

“He was smart. Calm. He believed he was protecting people.”

Daniel gave a small bitter smile.

“People always say that before they cross a line.”

Michael didn’t disagree.

“Northbridge changed him.”

“How?”

Michael looked toward the window.

“They gave him power.”

Outside, the wind moved through the trees.

A normal afternoon.

But inside the house, the past had returned.

“Victor started believing that rules didn’t matter if the result was right.”

Sarah whispered:

“And you?”

Michael looked at his hands.

“I believed him.”

The admission hurt more than anything else.

“I followed orders. I found people. I collected information.”

He swallowed.

“Until the Elena Brooks case.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Elena Brooks?”

“You know the name?”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Everyone in private security knows that case.”

Sarah looked between them.

“What happened?”

Michael closed his eyes.

The memory returned.

A woman running.

A frightened child.

A file.

A decision.

“I was assigned to find Elena. She was supposed to have stolen company documents.”

“And did she?”

Michael shook his head.

“No.”

“Then why was she being hunted?”

“Because she discovered what Northbridge was really doing.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“What was that?”

Michael lowered his voice.

“Northbridge wasn’t just protecting powerful people.”

A pause.

“They were controlling information.”

Sarah’s face tightened.

“Meaning?”

“Meaning they could destroy someone’s reputation. Erase evidence. Create stories.”

Daniel looked serious.

“They manufactured truth.”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.”

The room became quiet.

“And Victor?” Daniel asked.

“He was ordered to retrieve Elena.”

Michael looked at the floor.

“But I found out the truth first.”

Sarah stared at him.

“What did you do?”

“I helped her escape.”

“And Victor?”

Michael’s expression changed.

“That was the last time I saw him.”

Daniel studied him.

“But you said he died.”

Michael nodded.

“Three days later, there was an explosion at one of Northbridge’s facilities.”

Sarah covered her mouth.

“And Victor was inside?”

“That’s what they told me.”

Daniel looked suspicious.

“They told you?”

Michael nodded.

“No body. No evidence.”

Daniel stood.

“Then you assumed.”

Michael looked at him.

“Yes.”

A sudden sound interrupted them.

A knock.

Everyone froze.

Three slow knocks.

Not loud.

Not aggressive.

Almost polite.

Michael immediately stood.

“Stay behind me.”

Sarah grabbed Noah’s hand.

Daniel moved beside Michael.

Another knock.

This time slower.

Michael approached the door.

“Who is it?”

No answer.

Then a voice came from outside.

A voice Michael had not heard in twelve years.

A voice that instantly turned his blood cold.

“Still protecting everyone, Michael?”

Michael stopped breathing.

Sarah looked at him.

“Who is that?”

Michael didn’t respond.

Because he already knew.

The voice continued.

“You always had the same weakness.”

A pause.

“Your heart.”

Michael’s hand tightened.

Daniel whispered:

“Don’t open it.”

But Michael wasn’t listening.

Because the voice outside belonged to a ghost.

And ghosts weren’t supposed to knock on doors.

“Victor.”

Silence.

Then a quiet laugh.

“You remember me.”

Sarah stepped back.

“No…”

Michael looked at her.

“Stay with Noah.”

“But Michael…”

“Please.”

Something in his voice made her stop.

He opened the door.

Slowly.

The man standing outside looked older.

Different.

His hair had gray strands.

A scar crossed his left cheek.

But the eyes were the same.

Cold.

Focused.

Unforgettable.

Victor Hale smiled slightly.

“Hello, old friend.”

Michael stared at him.

“You’re alive.”

Victor tilted his head.

“That’s disappointing?”

Michael’s jaw tightened.

“What do you want?”

Victor looked past him.

Into the house.

At Sarah.

At Noah.

Then back at Michael.

“I wanted to see if you were still making the same mistakes.”

Michael stepped forward.

“You threatened my family.”

Victor’s expression remained calm.

“No.”

Michael frowned.

“No?”

Victor shook his head.

“I warned your family.”

Daniel appeared behind Michael.

Victor noticed him.

“Interesting.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You know me?”

Victor smiled.

“I know everyone who looks for me.”

Daniel immediately reached for something in his jacket.

Victor’s eyes moved instantly.

“Don’t.”

The single word stopped him.

Not because of fear.

Because Victor was certain.

That confidence made everyone uncomfortable.

Michael stepped between them.

“This ends now.”

Victor looked at him.

“Does it?”

He pulled something from his pocket.

A small USB drive.

Michael stared at it.

“What is that?”

Victor held it up.

“The truth.”

Nobody moved.

“What truth?”

Victor looked directly at Michael.

“The truth about why Northbridge wanted Elena Brooks.”

Michael’s face changed.

“That was twelve years ago.”

Victor smiled.

“And yet someone is still trying to kill you over it.”

Sarah looked confused.

“Kill?”

Victor looked at her.

“Your husband never told you the most important part.”

Michael felt a chill.

“Victor.”

But Victor continued.

“He didn’t just help Elena escape.”

Sarah looked at Michael.

“What is he talking about?”

Michael said nothing.

Victor took one step closer.

“He took something from Northbridge.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“A file.”

Michael looked at Victor.

“You’re lying.”

Victor smiled.

“Am I?”

He held up the USB drive.

“Then why has someone spent three months watching your family?”

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew.

Victor wasn’t there to attack them.

He was there because he knew something.

Something Michael had hidden.

Something that could explain everything.

Victor looked at Noah.

The boy immediately moved closer to his father.

Victor’s expression softened for a brief second.

Then disappeared.

“Michael, you spent twelve years running.”

He looked around the house.

“You built a beautiful life.”

A pause.

“But someone from your old life is tearing it apart.”

Michael stared at him.

“Who?”

Victor looked directly into his eyes.

“The person who gave me the order to kill Elena Brooks.”

Michael froze.

Because Victor’s next words changed everything.

“Your father.”

The world seemed to stop.

Sarah gasped.

Daniel went silent.

Michael stared at Victor.

“My father has been dead for fifteen years.”

Victor nodded.

“I know.”

A pause.

“That’s why this is interesting.”

Michael felt the ground disappear beneath him.

Victor placed the USB drive in his hand.

“Watch this.”

Then he turned away.

“Because when you see what’s inside…”

He looked back one last time.

“You’ll understand why your family was never the target.”

Michael stared at the drive.

“What was the target?”

Victor’s answer was almost a whisper.

“You.”

And then he walked away.

Leaving Michael standing in the doorway.

Holding a piece of the past.

May you like

A past he thought was buried forever.
