Chapter 15 - THE LAST SECRETWe returned home just before dawn.

The house looked exactly the same.
The same couch.
The same kitchen.
The same family photographs.
The same life I thought I'd lost.
But now I knew.
Nothing had been ordinary.
Not for years.
Daniel stood in the hallway.
“It's somewhere here.”
“Where?”
“I don't remember.”
I stared at him.
“You don't remember?”
“The ledger was copied.”
“Copied where?”
He looked at the bookshelf.
I followed his eyes.
Daniel walked over.
He removed an old family photograph.
Behind it was a safe.
I'd never seen it before.
Miller opened it.
Inside was a second ledger.
Thicker.
Newer.
And beneath it was a USB drive.
I opened the ledger.
Names filled the pages.
Doctors.
Police officers.
Judges.
Businessmen.
Politicians.
Every person connected to the organization.
Then I saw the final page.
There were only three names.
Victor Hale.
Mayor Hawthorne.
And…
David Morgan.
I froze.
David had been with us.
He'd helped rescue Caleb.
He'd been shot protecting us.
“David?”
Daniel looked stunned.
“No.”
Miller frowned.
“Then someone wanted him blamed.”
I turned the page.
Behind David's name was a handwritten note:
NOT A MEMBER. DECOY.
I exhaled.
Then beneath that:
REAL CONTACT: SARAH CARTER.
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Daniel grabbed the ledger.
“No.”
Miller looked at me.
“Sarah, did you ever have access to the company records?”
“No.”
“Did Daniel ever give you anything?”
“No.”
Daniel went pale.
“Wait.”
He opened the USB drive.
A video file appeared.
We played it.
I appeared on the screen.
But the recording was four years old.
I was sitting beside Daniel.
We were talking.
I watched myself say:
“I know what they're doing.”
I felt dizzy.
I had known.
Before Daniel's death.
Before Emma disappeared.
Before everything.
I had helped Daniel uncover the operation.
Then the video continued.
I looked directly into the camera.
“If something happens to us, Caleb and Emma must never know.”
Daniel asked:
“And Sarah?”
The woman on the screen smiled.
“She won't remember.”
I stopped breathing.
The woman beside Daniel was not me.
It was someone who looked almost identical.
My sister.
A sister I had never known existed.
The video ended.
Silence filled the room.
Miller stared at me.
“You have a sister?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Daniel whispered:
“She was the one who ordered the memory procedure.”
I couldn't speak.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman's voice spoke.
My voice.
Exactly my voice.
“Hello, Sarah.”
I looked at Daniel.
He closed his eyes.
The woman continued:
“You finally found the ledger.”
“Who are you?”
She laughed softly.
“You've been asking the wrong question.”
“Where is Emma?”
“She is safe.”
“What do you want?”
“The same thing I've always wanted.”
“What?”
“Back what belongs to me.”
I felt cold.
“What belongs to you?”
She answered:
“Your life.”
The call ended.
Then the front door opened.
A woman stepped inside.
Same face.
Same eyes.
Same voice.
My face.
My blood ran cold.
Daniel whispered:
“Rebecca.”
The woman smiled.
“Hello, little sister.”
I couldn't move.
Rebecca looked toward Caleb.
Then Emma.
Then Daniel.
“You ruined everything,” she said.
I stared at her.
“You drugged my son?”
She smiled.
“No.”
“Then who did?”
Her smile disappeared.
“Amber.”
I turned.
Amber was standing behind her.
Amber lowered her eyes.
And suddenly I understood.
The sedative hadn't been meant to kill Caleb.
It had been meant to make him forget one thing.
Something he had seen.
Something he had told Lily.
Something the entire organization was desperate to erase.
I grabbed Caleb.
“What did you see at the park?”
My son looked at me.
He began to cry.
Then he whispered:
“I saw Daddy.”
My heart stopped.
Daniel was standing beside me.
Caleb continued:
“Before Mommy's sister took me…”
“I saw Daddy talking to a man.”
Daniel stared at him.
“What man?”
Caleb pointed toward the doorway.
Toward Rebecca.
“No.”
He shook his head.
“Not her.”
Then he pointed at Daniel.
“Someone who looked exactly like Daddy.”
Everyone went silent.
Daniel's face drained of color.
Rebecca smiled.
And somewhere outside the house…
a second Daniel stepped out of the darkness.
He looked at me.
And said:
May you like
“You were never supposed to survive either.”
