Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT OF THE TRUTHCaleb led us to a small road outside town.

He said he remembered it from a dream.
But when we arrived, I realized it wasn't a dream.
It was the place Daniel's car had crashed.
Except there was no wreckage.
No police tape.
No burned metal.
Just an abandoned warehouse hidden behind the trees.
Inside, Emma was tied to a chair.
Victor stood beside her.
And behind Victor was Mayor Hawthorne.
He smiled.
“You finally came.”
I stepped forward.
“Let her go.”
Hawthorne shook his head.
“First, the notebook.”
I gave it to him.
He opened it.
Then smiled.
“You kept your husband's evidence all these years.”
“You killed him.”
“No.”
He looked at Daniel.
“Your husband killed himself.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You ordered the crash.”
Hawthorne laughed.
“You never understood.”
He explained.
The crash was supposed to kill Daniel.
But Daniel survived.
When Hawthorne realized Daniel had faked his death, he started hunting everyone connected to him.
Amber.
David.
Me.
Even our children.
“You made Daniel disappear.”
“Yes.”
“You took Emma.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you kill me?”
Hawthorne smiled.
“Because you were useful.”
I felt disgusted.
“You watched me mourn my husband.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me raise Caleb.”
“Yes.”
“And you did nothing.”
“I needed the children to remain accessible.”
Daniel moved forward.
Hawthorne raised his gun.
“Stay back.”
Emma began crying.
“Mommy!”
I looked at her.
“It's okay.”
Hawthorne turned toward the children.
“Both of them were always part of the plan.”
Then David entered.
He was bleeding.
But alive.
He raised his gun.
“Drop yours.”
Victor spun around.
David shot him.
Victor fell.
Hawthorne fired.
The bullet missed.
Miller stormed through the door with police behind him.
Everything exploded into chaos.
Hawthorne ran.
Daniel chased him.
I grabbed Emma.
“Run!”
We escaped into the woods.
Behind us, police shouted.
Gunfire echoed.
Then silence.
Minutes later, Miller emerged.
“Hawthorne is down.”
“Dead?”
“No.”
I collapsed with relief.
Then Daniel appeared.
Blood covered his shirt.
“Daniel!”
He held his side.
“I’m okay.”
I looked at him.
“Are you?”
He smiled sadly.
“No.”
He took my hand.
“I've been lying to you for four years.”
“Yes.”
“I thought I was protecting you.”
“You weren't.”
“I know.”
He pulled a small envelope from his pocket.
“There’s one more thing.”
Inside was a letter.
My name.
Written in Daniel's handwriting.
“When I die, give this to Sarah.”
I looked at him.
“What is it?”
“A confession.”
I opened it.
The first sentence destroyed everything I thought I knew.
Sarah, I didn't fake my death to protect you.
I read the next line.
I faked my death because I was the one who started the entire operation.
I looked at Daniel.
He closed his eyes.
“I was part of it.”
I stepped backward.
“You?”
“Yes.”
He had helped create the system.
He hadn't started it.
But he'd built part of it.
He had participated.
Then he'd tried to escape.
And when he realized Emma was caught inside it…
he betrayed them.
My husband had not simply been their victim.
He had once been one of them.
Miller came toward us.
“Sarah, we found something else.”
“What?”
He held up his phone.
“Your husband's confession isn't the final document.”
“What is?”
“A second ledger.”
“Where?”
Miller looked at Daniel.
“Daniel says you know where it is.”
I stared at him.
Daniel's expression changed.
He whispered:
“Sarah…”
“What?”
“The second ledger was never hidden.”
“Then where is it?”
Daniel looked toward Caleb.
May you like
My blood ran cold.
“It was inside your house.”
