Chapter 11 - DANIELEverything inside me shattered.

Daniel was alive.
My husband.
The man I had buried.
The man I had mourned.
Standing twenty feet away.
Alive.
I wanted to run to him.
Instead, I saw the gun.
“Daniel?”
He nodded.
His eyes were full of pain.
“I never stopped loving you.”
I laughed through tears.
“You let me believe you were dead for four years.”
“I thought it was the only way.”
“You let me raise Caleb alone.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“You let me grieve our daughter.”
He closed his eyes.
“I know.”
“You knew Emma was alive?”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe she died.”
“I had no choice.”
I stared at him.
“There is always a choice.”
Victor laughed.
“That’s what weak people say.”
David stepped forward.
“You've lied long enough.”
Victor pulled a gun.
“Stay back.”
Amber moved closer to Daniel.
“Give me the notebook.”
I didn't move.
“Why?”
“Because it's the last evidence.”
“Against Victor?”
Daniel answered.
“Against everyone.”
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel finally told me everything.
The company wasn't simply laundering money.
It was creating fake identities.
Children were used as legal shells.
Accounts were opened under those identities.
Millions passed through them.
Emma's records were accidentally connected to one of those accounts.
Daniel discovered it.
He tried to expose the operation.
Victor threatened him.
But there was another person above Victor.
Someone with influence over hospitals, police, and judges.
Daniel didn't know who.
Until the night of the crash.
“Then you faked your death?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the person after me wanted me dead.”
“And Amber?”
“She helped me.”
I turned to Amber.
“You drugged my son.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“The man above Victor ordered me to make Caleb disappear.”
“What?”
“I refused to hand him over.”
“So you drugged him?”
“To buy time.”
“You almost killed him.”
“I know.”
Daniel stepped toward me.
“Sarah, Caleb was never supposed to survive.”
I stared at him.
The room went silent.
“Then why is he alive?”
Daniel looked toward Victor.
“Because someone betrayed the organization.”
“Who?”
Victor smiled.
“Your wife.”
I looked at Amber.
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I stole the medication.”
“You?”
“I was supposed to use it on Caleb.”
She swallowed.
“But I couldn't.”
“So why did you?”
“To make them believe I had followed orders.”
I couldn't process it.
Daniel continued.
“The real target was Emma.”
I looked at my daughter.
She was standing beside David.
Then she said:
“Daddy?”
Everyone froze.
I looked at Daniel.
Emma stared at him.
“You're my daddy.”
Daniel's face crumbled.
He knelt.
Emma ran to him.
I watched.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown.
A voice spoke.
“You have all the pieces now.”
I recognized it.
It was the same voice from the first message.
Victor looked confused.
“Who is that?”
The caller laughed.
“Victor, you still haven't realized.”
A pause.
Then:
“I hired you.”
Victor's face went white.
The caller said:
“And now I'm going to clean up everyone who knows.”
The church windows exploded.
Gunfire erupted.
Daniel grabbed me.
David grabbed Emma.
And Amber pulled Caleb through a side door.
As we ran, I heard Victor scream one name.
May you like
A name I'd never expected.
“NO, MAYOR HAWTHORNE!”
