Chapter 9: The Bullet That Changed Everything

For a moment, I couldn't process what I was hearing.
Federal Judge Mara Carter is hereby suspended pending investigation for the attempted murder of Charles Whitmore.
My name echoed through the hospital.
Not Judge Carter.
Not my title.
My identity had just been turned into evidence against me.
Daniel crouched beside Ethan.
“Don't move.”
Ethan's hand was still pressed against his chest.
Blood covered his fingers.
I looked at Charles.
He was lying several feet away.
Blood soaked his shirt.
Yet somehow he was still conscious.
He looked at me.
And smiled.
“Congratulations.”
I stared at him.
“For what?”
“You just lost your judgeship.”
“No.”
He coughed.
“You don't understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“You're finished.”
I leaned closer.
“You made one mistake.”
His smile faded.
“You assumed I needed the bench to fight you.”
Before he could respond, Daniel shouted,
“Medical team!”
Two nurses rushed toward Ethan.
I immediately recognized one of them.
Melissa.
The nurse who had been holding the knife earlier.
She dropped beside Ethan.
“Move back.”
“No.”
“Judge Carter, I need room.”
I stepped aside.
Melissa cut Ethan's shirt open.
The bullet had entered high in his chest.
But something was wrong.
She frowned.
“This isn't a normal gunshot.”
“What?”
“The bullet didn't penetrate deeply.”
Daniel looked confused.
“How?”
Melissa touched the wound.
“It's a blank.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
She looked at me.
“The bullet is designed to look real.”
Daniel immediately understood.
“An impact round.”
Melissa nodded.
“Probably modified.”
I looked at Ethan.
His eyes opened.
“Mara.”
“I’m here.”
He whispered,
“I knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That they would frame me.”
I grabbed his hand.
“Why?”
He swallowed.
“Because I took the real gun.”
I froze.
“What?”
Ethan looked toward Charles.
“The weapon beside me isn't mine.”
Daniel immediately searched Ethan.
Then he found a tiny black device attached beneath his sleeve.
A recording device.
He removed it.
“What is this?”
Ethan looked at me.
“Proof.”
My heart began pounding.
“Proof of what?”
He smiled weakly.
“Everything.”
Daniel activated it.
A recording began.
Charles's voice filled the hallway.
“Your wife will surrender the trust.”
Ethan's voice answered.
“And if she doesn't?”
“She'll choose between her children.”
A pause.
Then Reed's voice.
“She won't refuse.”
I stared at the speaker.
The conversation continued.
Reed said:
“And once she signs, eliminate her.”
My blood froze.
Daniel looked at me.
The recording continued.
Charles asked,
“And Ethan?”
Reed replied:
“He dies first.”
Then the recording ended.
Silence.
Charles looked horrified.
Reed's expression remained calm.
“You fabricated that.”
Daniel stared at him.
“It's authenticated.”
“No.”
“You just threatened a federal judge.”
Reed smiled.
“A recording can be manipulated.”
I looked at him.
“Not this one.”
He frowned.
I pointed toward the device.
“Because I know the encryption.”
Reed's expression changed.
“You don't.”
“I do.”
Seven years ago, during the Blackwood investigation, my office had developed a secure recording protocol.
The encryption was based on a judicial signature.
My signature.
Only three people had ever known how it worked.
Me.
Judge Reed.
And the chief prosecutor on the case.
I looked at Reed.
“You taught me that encryption.”
His face became expressionless.
“Then you know how easy it is to fake.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“Because the encryption changes every twelve hours.”
Daniel looked at me.
“And?”
“The recording was created at 7:43 this morning.”
Reed's eyes narrowed.
I continued.
“Seven minutes before Margaret entered my room.”
Reed's face finally cracked.
The recording was real.
He knew it.
And so did everyone else.
Then Charles suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned toward him.
“You still don't get it.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“You think Reed is in charge.”
Reed looked at Charles.
“Stop.”
Charles laughed again.
“He's not.”
Reed's eyes became cold.
“Charles.”
“You're just another servant.”
I looked between them.
“Who is above you?”
Charles didn't answer.
“Tell me.”
He smiled.
“Ask your husband.”
I turned toward Ethan.
He was conscious now.
Weak.
But awake.
“Ethan?”
He stared at his father.
Then at Reed.
Then at me.
“There is someone else.”
“Who?”
He shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Charles smiled.
“But you do.”
Ethan looked terrified.
I squeezed his hand.
“Tell me.”
He whispered,
“Your supervisor.”
I froze.
“My supervisor?”
“Seven years ago.”
I searched my memory.
The Blackwood case.
The prosecutor's office.
My supervisor.
There had been one person above me.
Someone who signed every major authorization.
Someone who had access to my medical records.
Someone who knew about the hidden evidence.
I whispered the name.
“Thomas Vale.”
Daniel looked at me.
“Who is Thomas Vale?”
“My former supervisor.”
Ethan shook his head.
“Not just your supervisor.”
“What?”
“He was the person who ordered your memory erased.”
The hallway seemed to tilt.
I remembered Thomas.
His gray suit.
His quiet voice.
His habit of tapping a pen twice against the desk.
He had always seemed trustworthy.
I suddenly remembered something else.
The morning after my attack seven years ago, he was the first person at my hospital bedside.
He had told me:
“Forget the case, Mara. It's over.”
I had believed him.
Because I trusted him.
My phone suddenly vibrated.
Unknown number.
A text appeared.
YOU'RE REMEMBERING TOO MUCH.
Another message followed.
LOOK BEHIND YOU.
I turned.
At the end of the hallway stood a man.
Gray suit.
Silver tie.
A familiar face.
Thomas Vale.
My former supervisor.
He smiled.
“Hello, Mara.”
I couldn't speak.
Daniel immediately raised his weapon.
“Don't move.”
Thomas lifted his hands.
“I came to help.”
“You're under arrest.”
“For what?”
Daniel pointed toward the recording device.
“Conspiracy.”
Thomas smiled.
“That's unfortunate.”
I stared at him.
“You erased my memory.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“You drugged me.”
“No.”
“You ordered Ethan's kidnapping.”
“No.”
I stepped forward.
“Then what did you do?”
Thomas looked at me.
“I gave you a chance.”
“A chance for what?”
“To survive.”
I stared at him.
“Survive what?”
He glanced toward Charles.
Then Reed.
Then Karen.
Finally, he looked at me.
“The Blackwood Trust was never created to hide money.”
My blood ran cold.
“Then what is it?”
Thomas smiled.
“It was created to hide people.”
Daniel frowned.
“What people?”
Thomas's expression became serious.
“People who officially do not exist.”
I felt a chill.
“Why?”
“Because some of them were witnesses.”
“Witnesses to what?”
Thomas looked at me.
“The murder of the president.”
Silence.
Even Charles stopped smiling.
Thomas continued.
“And you were the only person who saw the original evidence.”
I couldn't breathe.
Daniel stared at him.
“Which president?”
Thomas didn't answer.
Instead, every light in the hospital went out.
A massive explosion shook the building.
The floor beneath us cracked.
People screamed.
Ethan was thrown from the stretcher.
I grabbed him.
Then the ceiling above us began collapsing.
Thomas disappeared into the smoke.
Reed disappeared too.
Charles was nowhere to be seen.
Daniel shouted,
“GET DOWN!”
I covered Nora with my body.
The building shook again.
Then a deafening roar came from somewhere beneath us.
The floor split open.
And I fell.
Down into darkness.
May you like
With my daughter in my arms.
And Ethan's hand slipping from mine.
