Chapter 8: The Judge Who Signed My Death

Judge Malcolm Reed stepped into the hallway.
For a moment, I couldn't hear anything.
Not the alarms.
Not the running footsteps.
Not even Nora crying in Charles Whitmore's arms.
All I could hear was the voice from seven years ago.
Forget this case.
Reed looked exactly as he had in my memories.
Silver hair.
Immaculate suit.
Calm expression.
The face of a man who had spent decades convincing people that he was untouchable.
He looked at me.
Then smiled.
“Mara.”
My stomach turned.
“You.”
“Yes.”
“You erased my memory.”
He tilted his head.
“That is an unfortunate way of describing it.”
“You drugged me.”
“I protected you.”
“You destroyed evidence.”
“I protected the judiciary.”
“You ordered my death.”
His smile disappeared.
“That part was not my decision.”
I looked at Charles.
Charles smiled.
“So you finally understand.”
Daniel stepped in front of me.
“Reed, release the child.”
Reed looked at him.
“You really should read your own file.”
Daniel's face hardened.
“What file?”
Reed pointed toward the wall.
A screen turned on.
Daniel's personnel record appeared.
His name.
His photograph.
His entire career.
Then a red stamp appeared.
COMPROMISED.
Daniel stared at it.
“That isn't real.”
Reed smiled.
“You'd be surprised how easy it is to create a new truth.”
Daniel raised his weapon.
“Try it.”
Reed laughed.
“Still brave.”
Charles looked at Reed.
“Finish this.”
Reed nodded.
Then he turned to me.
“You have two options.”
I stared at him.
“I'm listening.”
“Sign the transfer order.”
“No.”
“You haven't heard the terms.”
“I don't need to.”
Reed walked closer.
“The Blackwood Trust transfers to you.”
I frowned.
“Why?”
“Because you're the only person legally capable of sealing it.”
“And if I refuse?”
Reed looked at Nora.
“Your daughter dies.”
My blood turned cold.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Don't touch her.”
Charles raised the gun.
Ethan stopped.
Reed continued.
“Sign the order, and the children live.”
I stared at the document.
The signature at the bottom looked exactly like mine.
But something was wrong.
The date.
I looked closer.
August 14.
Tomorrow.
I looked at Reed.
“Why tomorrow?”
He smiled.
“Because tomorrow the trust becomes legally dormant.”
“What happens then?”
“All evidence disappears.”
Daniel looked at me.
“They're trying to destroy the archive.”
I nodded.
Reed's expression changed.
“Not exactly.”
He looked at Charles.
“Tell her.”
Charles smiled.
“The archive doesn't contain the evidence.”
I frowned.
“Then what does?”
Charles pointed toward my chest.
“You.”
I felt a chill.
“What?”
“You are the evidence.”
I stared at him.
“You recorded everything.”
Reed nodded.
“Seven years ago, you discovered the Blackwood Trust. Before we could take the original evidence, you created a second copy.”
“Where?”
Reed smiled.
“Inside your own judicial record.”
I remembered the case.
Every order.
Every sealed transcript.
Every procedural filing.
My hands began to shake.
“You hid the ledger in court records.”
“Yes.”
“And you couldn't destroy it because I'm the sitting judge.”
“Correct.”
I looked at Reed.
“So you need me.”
“Desperately.”
That was the first time I saw fear behind his eyes.
“You can't access the archive without my authorization.”
“Correct.”
“And you can't transfer the trust without my signature.”
“Correct.”
“And you can't destroy the evidence without my judicial seal.”
Reed smiled.
“Now you're understanding.”
I looked at Charles.
“Then why kidnap my children?”
“Because you needed motivation.”
I stared at him.
“No.”
Charles shook his head.
“You wouldn't surrender to threats against yourself.”
He glanced at Nora.
“But mothers are different.”
My hands clenched.
“You know nothing about me.”
“I know exactly what kind of mother you are.”
He smiled.
“And that's why this worked.”
I looked at Ethan.
His eyes were filled with fury.
Then I noticed something.
His hands were behind his back.
His fingers were moving.
Three taps.
Pause.
Two taps.
Pause.
Three taps.
I recognized the pattern.
A signal we had used during our marriage.
It meant:
Trust me.
I looked at him.
He nodded almost imperceptibly.
Then I looked at Daniel.
He noticed too.
I turned back toward Reed.
“Fine.”
Everyone froze.
Ethan's eyes widened.
I took one step forward.
“I'll sign.”
Reed smiled.
“I knew you'd come to your senses.”
“But I have conditions.”
His smile faded.
“What conditions?”
“You release Nora first.”
“No.”
“Then no signature.”
Reed considered it.
“You're in no position to negotiate.”
I looked directly at him.
“You need me.”
He stared at me.
I continued.
“You need my hand. My seal. My authorization. My legal identity.”
I stepped closer.
“So don't pretend you have the power.”
Charles raised his weapon.
Reed stopped him.
“Wait.”
I smiled faintly.
“See?”
Reed hated that.
He nodded.
“Fine.”
He motioned toward Charles.
“Release the girl.”
Charles hesitated.
Then he handed Nora to a nearby guard.
I watched carefully.
The guard began walking toward me.
One step.
Two.
Three.
Then I noticed something.
He wasn't carrying Nora like a newborn.
He was holding her too tightly.
His arm was positioned around her neck.
I immediately realized.
“Stop.”
The guard froze.
I looked at Reed.
“You said she would be released.”
“She is.”
“No.”
I pointed.
“She's still being used as a shield.”
Reed's expression hardened.
“Sign.”
“Bring her to me.”
“No.”
“Then I don't sign.”
The guard tightened his grip.
Nora cried.
I felt something inside me snap.
I looked at Ethan.
He nodded.
Now.
Ethan suddenly lunged toward Charles.
Daniel moved at the same instant.
A gunshot exploded.
The hallway erupted.
Charles stumbled backward.
Reed ducked.
The guard holding Nora panicked.
I ran.
I didn't think about my incision.
I didn't think about the pain.
I only saw my daughter.
I reached the guard.
He tried to turn.
I grabbed Nora's blanket and pulled.
The guard lost his balance.
Nora slipped.
I caught her against my chest.
She screamed.
I held her tighter.
“My baby.”
Then I heard another gunshot.
Ethan screamed.
“Mara!”
I turned.
Charles was on the floor.
Blood covered his shirt.
But he was smiling.
Because he wasn't the one who had been shot.
Ethan was.
My husband collapsed against the wall.
“No!”
I ran toward him.
He looked at me.
His hand pressed against his chest.
“Mara...”
Blood slipped between his fingers.
I dropped beside him.
“No, no, no.”
Daniel shouted for medical assistance.
Charles laughed weakly from the floor.
“You see?”
I looked at him.
“You did this.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
His eyes moved toward Reed.
“He did.”
I looked at Reed.
Judge Malcolm Reed stood at the end of the hallway.
His gun was still raised.
And his next words destroyed everything I thought I knew.
“I didn't shoot your husband.”
He lowered the weapon.
“Your husband shot himself.”
I stared at Ethan.
“What?”
Ethan's eyes widened.
He shook his head.
“No.”
Reed smiled.
Then he pointed at Ethan's hand.
There was a gun lying beside him.
I stared at it.
A gun that I had never seen before.
Reed whispered,
“Your husband just killed Charles Whitmore.”
I looked toward Charles.
The blood on his shirt wasn't from Ethan.
There was a second bullet wound.
Charles was dying.
And Ethan was being framed.
Then the hospital speakers came alive.
A woman's voice announced:
“Federal Judge Mara Carter is hereby suspended pending investigation for the attempted murder of Charles Whitmore.”
I looked up.
The entire hallway went silent.
My judicial career had just been destroyed in front of my eyes.
May you like
And Reed smiled.
Because that was exactly what he wanted.
