Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Photograph

For several seconds, I couldn't breathe.

Ethan's photograph remained frozen on my phone screen.

His wrists were tied.

His face was bruised.

And behind him was a wall I didn't recognize.

But Margaret did.

I knew because the moment she saw the photograph, her knees nearly buckled.

Daniel noticed.

“Mrs. Whitmore.”

Margaret didn't answer.

“Where is that?”

“I don't know.”

“You recognized it.”

“No.”

“You're lying.”

Margaret looked at him.

Then at me.

“I didn't know they would hurt him.”

My blood ran cold.

“They?”

Margaret said nothing.

I forced myself upright despite the pain.

“Who are they?”

She stared at the floor.

“Margaret.”

Her eyes finally met mine.

“They told me you would never find out.”

“Find out what?”

“That Ethan was never supposed to marry you.”

The words hit me harder than anything else that morning.

“What?”

Margaret swallowed.

“They knew about you before the wedding.”

I stared at her.

“Who knew?”

“My husband.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“Your husband?”

Margaret nodded.

“Charles.”

I remembered the name.

Charles Whitmore.

Ethan's father.

A powerful real estate developer who had spent decades building a family empire across three states.

A man I had met only twice.

A man who had always looked at me strangely.

Not with dislike.

With calculation.

I had assumed he was simply cold.

Now I wasn't so sure.

“Where is Charles?” I asked.

Margaret looked away.

“Dead.”

Daniel frowned.

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

“And you're saying he knew who Judge Carter was?”

Margaret's lips trembled.

“He knew everything.”

I looked at my newborn son.

Noah had finally stopped crying.

A nurse was holding him against her shoulder.

Nora was sleeping in the other bassinet.

My children looked impossibly small.

Completely innocent.

Yet somehow they had become the center of something far larger than our family.

I looked back at Margaret.

“Why did you want Noah?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't.”

I stared at her.

“You walked into my hospital room, slapped me, took my son, and tried to make me sign away my rights.”

“I was trying to save Ethan.”

“You call this saving him?”

She shook her head.

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain it.”

Margaret opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Start talking.”

She finally whispered,

“Karen.”

I remembered the name.

The woman Margaret had mentioned earlier.

“She can't have children,” Margaret said. “Charles promised her a baby.”

“Who is Karen?”

Margaret hesitated.

Then she said something that made every person in the room go silent.

“Charles's daughter.”

Daniel frowned.

“Charles had another daughter?”

Margaret nodded.

“From his first marriage.”

I felt a chill crawl across my skin.

“Why haven't I heard of her?”

“Because Charles erased her.”

“Why?”

“Because she wasn't normal.”

Margaret immediately corrected herself.

“Because she was dangerous.”

Daniel folded his arms.

“That's not an explanation.”

Margaret looked at me.

“Karen was obsessed with Ethan.”

My stomach tightened.

“She believed Ethan belonged to her.”

I thought about every strange incident during my pregnancy.

The anonymous flowers.

The letters with no return address.

The phone calls that ended whenever I answered.

The time someone had followed me from the courthouse.

I had assumed those things were unrelated.

Now they suddenly looked connected.

Margaret continued.

“Charles promised Karen that one day Ethan would marry her.”

My voice became cold.

“But he married me.”

“Yes.”

“And that's when everything started.”

Margaret nodded.

“He became furious.”

“Your husband was dead when Ethan married me.”

“Exactly.”

I stared at her.

“So who was carrying out his wishes?”

Margaret didn't answer.

Daniel did.

“Karen.”

Margaret's silence confirmed it.

I looked at the photograph again.

Ethan was alive.

That was what mattered.

But there was another question.

“Why Noah?”

Margaret wiped her face.

“Because Karen believes Noah is the heir.”

“To what?”

“The Whitmore estate.”

I almost laughed.

“You kidnapped my newborn over an inheritance?”

Margaret shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice dropped.

“Not an inheritance.”

“What, then?”

“The trust.”

Daniel's expression sharpened.

“What trust?”

Margaret looked at me.

“The Blackwood Trust.”

The name meant nothing to me.

Until I remembered something.

A case from six years earlier.

A sealed federal investigation involving financial fraud, offshore accounts, and a private trust worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

The case had been transferred to another district before I ever became involved.

But one name had appeared repeatedly in the sealed filings.

Whitmore.

My pulse quickened.

“Charles Whitmore was involved in that case.”

Margaret looked terrified.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He created the trust.”

“Why?”

“To hide money.”

Daniel looked toward one of the officers.

“Get federal investigators on the phone.”

Margaret immediately panicked.

“No!”

Everyone turned toward her.

“You can't.”

“Why?”

“Because if they find the trust, Ethan dies.”

The room became silent.

I stared at her.

“Explain.”

Margaret stepped closer.

“The trust contains evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

“Everything.”

“What everything?”

“Money laundering. Bribery. Judges. Politicians. Police officers.”

My stomach dropped.

“Judges?”

Margaret nodded.

“And one of those judges was involved in protecting Charles.”

Daniel looked at me.

I understood his expression.

He was thinking what I was thinking.

Someone inside the justice system might be involved.

Someone powerful enough to make information disappear.

Someone who might already know I was in this hospital.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

YOU SHOULD HAVE SIGNED.

Another message arrived.

NOW YOUR DAUGHTER WILL BE TAKEN TOO.

I looked toward Nora's bassinet.

My blood turned to ice.

“Daniel.”

He followed my gaze.

The room suddenly exploded into motion.

Two nurses moved toward the babies.

The security officers spread across the doorway.

Daniel shouted,

“Lock the floor down!”

Then the lights went out.

Everything went black.

Someone screamed.

A baby began crying.

Then another.

I heard footsteps.

Fast footsteps.

Coming from inside the room.

Not the hallway.

Inside.

Someone was already here.

A hand grabbed my shoulder.

I tried to scream.

Then a familiar voice whispered directly into my ear.

“Judge Carter... don't make a sound.”

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

It belonged to someone I trusted.

Someone who had been standing beside my bed only moments earlier.

And then I heard four words that made my entire world collapse.

“Your husband is dead.”

May you like

The lights suddenly came back on.

And the person standing beside me was holding a blood-covered knife.
