Chapter 7 - MotherThe room went silent.

Then the door opened.

A woman stepped inside.

Older.

Thinner.

Gray at the temples.

But the eyes were exactly the same.

My knees nearly gave out.

"Mom?"

She stopped.

Her lips trembled.

"Emma."

I couldn't move.

For eighteen years, I had imagined my mother's final moments.

Now she was standing in front of me.

Alive.

I walked toward her.

Slowly.

She opened her arms.

I collapsed against her.

She held me tightly.

"I'm sorry."

I cried.

"You were dead."

"I know."

"You let me believe you were dead."

"I had to."

"How could you do that?"

She pulled away.

"Because they were watching you."

"Who?"

She looked toward Ryan.

Then toward the ceiling cameras.

"The people who control the network."

I wiped my face.

"What network?"

She looked at me.

"The one your father spent thirty years trying to destroy."

I turned to Ryan.

"You said my mother created it."

He lowered his head.

"I was wrong."

Mom nodded.

"He thought I created it."

"But you didn't?"

"I discovered it."

She led us into a control room.

Screens displayed financial transactions across the globe.

Names.

Companies.

Bank accounts.

Politicians.

Executives.

Judges.

Police officials.

My stomach twisted.

"This is enormous."

"It is."

Mom pointed at the largest screen.

"This network was originally created by three families."

"Carter."

"Hale."

"And Hayes."

Ryan stepped forward.

"My father."

Mom nodded.

"Your father."

I looked between them.

"But why?"

"Money."

She paused.

"And power."

"Then why didn't Dad stop them?"

"He tried."

"Then why is he involved?"

Mom's expression hardened.

"Because he made one terrible mistake."

"What?"

"He trusted Victor Hale."

Ryan looked shocked.

"Victor betrayed all of them."

Mom nodded.

"And when your father discovered the truth, he tried to expose him."

"But then you disappeared."

"Victor attacked me."

She touched the scar near her shoulder.

"I survived."

"Where did you go?"

"Everywhere."

She showed me an old photograph.

A young woman.

My mother.

Standing beside another woman.

Evelyn.

Dad's first wife.

I stared.

"You knew her."

"Yes."

"What happened to her?"

My mother's expression became darker.

"She discovered the real purpose of the network."

"What was it?"

Mom looked at my stomach.

"Genetic inheritance."

I didn't understand.

"What does that mean?"

"The network wasn't just controlling businesses."

She opened a classified document.

"They were collecting family records."

"Bloodlines."

"Children."

"Inheritance."

I felt sick.

"Why?"

"Because certain families controlled assets worth hundreds of billions."

"Assets that could not legally be seized without heirs."

"So they manipulated marriages."

My breath caught.

Mom nodded.

"They arranged relationships."

She looked at Ryan.

"Your husband was selected long before you met."

I turned toward him.

"No."

Ryan looked at me.

"I didn't know."

Mom continued.

"They chose Ryan because his family had access to Hayes Capital."

"They needed an heir."

My hand instinctively covered my belly.

Mom's eyes filled with tears.

"The child isn't just your child."

She lowered her voice.

"The baby is legally connected to three dynasties."

I stared at her.

"That's impossible."

"No."

She opened another file.

"And that's why they want your baby."

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Mom froze.

Ryan moved toward the door.

Then every screen in the room changed simultaneously.

One message appeared.

WE FOUND YOU.

May you like

Another appeared beneath it.

AND WE HAVE YOUR FATHER.
