Chapter 4 - The Woman in the PhotographWe left the penthouse before dawn.

The police wanted Ryan.
The investigators wanted answers.
My father wanted me somewhere safe.
I wanted the truth.
The secret room had changed everything.
The photograph of my mother with Ryan's father sat on the table between us.
Dad stared at it.
"I've never seen this."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I would have destroyed it."
I looked at him.
"Exactly."
He had no answer.
Claire placed another file beside the photograph.
"There's something you should know."
Inside was a birth certificate.
Not mine.
A woman named Evelyn Carter.
Mother: Margaret Carter.
Father: Richard Carter.
I stared.
"What is this?"
Dad closed his eyes.
"Evelyn was my first wife."
I looked up.
"What?"
"You never knew about her."
"No."
"Because she disappeared."
"When?"
"Eighteen years ago."
The same year my mother was supposedly killed?
My chest tightened.
"What does she have to do with Mom?"
Dad looked away.
"Everything."
He finally told me the story.
Evelyn had been married to him for six years.
She knew about Carter Global's internal operations.
She knew several executives were stealing money.
She confronted them.
Then one night she vanished.
My father told everyone she had left him.
But he never filed a police report.
"Why?"
"Because someone threatened to kill you."
I froze.
"I was a baby."
"They knew about you."
I stared at him.
"Who?"
"Victor Hale."
The room became silent.
Dad continued.
"Victor was not just head of security."
"He was working for the people stealing from my company."
"And Mom?"
"Your mother discovered the connection."
I suddenly understood.
My mother had not randomly become involved.
She had inherited Evelyn's investigation.
And Ryan's family had been connected to it.
Ryan's father.
Victor Hale.
My mother's death.
Everything was connected.
Then Claire dropped another bomb.
"There's one more thing."
She placed a document on the table.
Ryan had withdrawn a large amount of cash the week before our wedding.
Nearly five million dollars.
The recipient?
Victor Hale.
My stomach twisted.
"Victor disappeared three years ago."
Claire nodded.
"Officially."
I looked at her.
"Officially?"
She opened a photograph.
A grainy security image showed a man walking into a private hospital.
Older.
Heavier.
But unmistakable.
Victor Hale.
Alive.
Taken six months ago.
Dad stared at the picture.
"I thought he was dead."
Claire shook her head.
"He isn't."
I felt sick.
"Where is he?"
"We don't know."
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A message.
YOU SHOULD STOP LOOKING.
I showed Dad.
His face went pale.
Another message arrived.
OR YOUR BABY WILL NEVER BE BORN.
My blood ran cold.
Dad stood instantly.
"We're moving."
"What?"
"Now."
"I'm not running."
"This isn't about running."
He looked at my stomach.
"They know about the baby."
Claire took my phone.
"We need to trace this."
The message vanished.
Deleted remotely.
Dad called his security team.
Then another message arrived.
A photograph.
It showed me standing in front of the hospital two days earlier.
Someone had been watching me.
Another photograph arrived.
This one showed Ryan.
Not recent.
Taken years ago.
Standing beside Victor Hale.
And then the final photograph appeared.
My mother.
Alive.
Standing beside Victor.
The timestamp was dated one week after the night everyone said she died.
I stared at the image.
My mother looked directly into the camera.

And on the bottom of the photograph was a handwritten note.
SHE NEVER DIED.
