Chapter 15 - The HeirThe lights died.

Emergency alarms exploded through the hospital.
Patients screamed.
Security rushed into the hallway.
Mom grabbed my hand.
"Emma."
"What is happening?"
"The trust."
I didn't understand.
The shaking stopped.
Every screen in the hospital turned on at once.
A face appeared.
An old man.
Gray hair.
Cold eyes.
My grandfather.
Impossible.
He had been dead for twelve years.
Yet he was speaking.
"Hello, Emma."
I couldn't breathe.
Mom whispered:
"He recorded it."
Grandfather continued.
"If you are seeing this message, then the Carter trust has been activated."
A timer appeared.
Twenty-four hours.
"During the next twenty-four hours, every asset belonging to the Carter family will transfer."
Ryan entered the room.
"To whom?"
Grandfather answered:
"To the rightful heir."
The screen changed.
My photograph appeared.
Then my baby's ultrasound.
My heart stopped.
Grandfather spoke again.
"Power corrupts families."
"It destroys marriages."
"It turns children into weapons."
"So I created one final safeguard."
The screen changed again.
A list of names appeared.
Richard Carter.
Margaret Carter.
Andrew Carter.
Emma Carter.
Ryan Hayes.
I stared.
Then another name appeared.
UNKNOWN MALE.
Ryan looked at me.
"The father."
I felt cold.
Grandfather continued.
"The final beneficiary will not be determined by documents."
"It will be determined by blood."
My heart pounded.
A genetic test began.
The hospital laboratory connected automatically.
DNA profiles appeared.
The system compared mine.
Ryan's.
Andrew's.
Victor's.
Dad's.
And finally the baby's.
The machine paused.
Then displayed:
PATERNITY VERIFIED.
The screen went black.
One sentence remained.
THE CHILD BELONGS TO HIM.
Everyone stared at Ryan.
He shook his head.
"No."
I couldn't breathe.
Ryan looked at me.
"I swear..."
Dad stepped forward.
"Don't."
Ryan stared at the screen.
"That's impossible."
Mom started crying.
"Not again."
I turned toward her.
"What does that mean?"
She whispered:
"There was another embryo."
My blood went cold.
"Whose?"
Mom couldn't answer.
Then the hospital doors opened.
A man walked inside.
Security raised their weapons.
He lifted both hands.
"I don't want trouble."
I looked at him.
Tall.
Dark hair.
Scar across his jaw.
Eyes that somehow felt familiar.
He looked directly at me.
Then at Mom.
And finally at Dad.
"You should have told her years ago."
Dad whispered:
"Andrew?"
The man smiled.
"No."
He stepped closer.
"I'm his twin."
Silence.
I looked at Mom.
Then Dad.
Then the stranger.
My grandfather's voice echoed from the hospital speakers one last time.
"Emma, you have spent your entire life believing you were the daughter who survived."
The stranger smiled.
"You weren't."
The screen turned on again.
A final message appeared.
THERE WERE TWO CARTER CHILDREN.
ONE WAS HIDDEN.
ONE WAS SACRIFICED.
AND ONLY ONE CAN CONTROL THE TRUST.
The stranger looked at me.
Then at my stomach.
"My sister."
He smiled.
"We need to talk."
Outside the hospital, dozens of black vehicles suddenly surrounded the building.
Dad rushed to the window.
His face went pale.
"They're here."
"Who?"
He looked back at me.
"The people who started all of this."
The stranger moved closer.
"And they don't want the money."
He lowered his voice.
"They want the baby."
I held my stomach.
The baby kicked.
Hard.
Once.
Twice.
Then three times.
And the hospital lights went out again.
From somewhere in the darkness, a woman's voice whispered:
"Finally."
"After twenty-six years..."
"You're exactly where we need you."
And I realized, with horror, that everything I had believed about my family, my marriage, my mother, my father, and even my unborn child had been part of a story someone else had written.
May you like
Until tonight.
Because now it was my turn to write the ending.
