Chapter 7 - The Lawyer in the ShadowsRichard Vale had handled our family's legal paperwork for years.

I had trusted him.
That was becoming a dangerous pattern.
Mara discovered that he had represented Olivia personally while also providing legal services to companies connected to my family.
Conflict of interest.
Hidden relationships.
Financial transfers.
And now, possibly, fraud.
We arranged a meeting.
Richard arrived at Mara's office wearing an expensive suit.
He smiled.
“Sarah. I'm sorry things have become complicated.”
I stared at him.
“You knew.”
He paused.
“Knew what?”
“You knew about Olivia Family Care LLC.”
“I was one of its advisors.”
“You knew money was being transferred through it.”
“I advised them on compliance.”
I leaned forward.
“Did you know my identity documents were copied?”
“No.”
“Did you know my signature was forged?”
“No.”
“Did you know Olivia planned to use my daughter in a custody case?”
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But Mara noticed.
“So you did know.”
Richard adjusted his tie.
“You are making serious accusations.”
Mara placed the basement photograph in front of him.
His expression froze.
“That file came from your office,” she said.
“What?”
“The paper stock matches.”
He stared at it.
Then at me.
“You don't understand what you're dealing with.”
I almost smiled.
“That sentence is becoming very popular.”
Richard stood.
“This meeting is over.”
Mara blocked the door.
“Sit down.”
For the first time, his confidence disappeared.
An hour later, the police arrived.
Richard's office was searched.
They found multiple draft agreements.
One was a custody agreement.
One transferred authority over Emma.
Another gave Daniel temporary access to my financial accounts if I was declared medically or emotionally incapable of managing them.
And the most shocking document was a trust amendment.
It would transfer control of several family assets after my death.
To Daniel.
Then Olivia.
Then Ashley.
Mara stared at it.
“This is not a divorce plan.”
“What is it?” I asked.
“A contingency plan.”
I felt cold.
“For my death?”
Mara looked at me.
“Yes.”
At 9:15 p.m., the investigator called.
Richard was cooperating.
Not because he had suddenly developed a conscience.
Because Olivia had threatened him too.
The investigator asked us to come in.
Richard finally confessed.
It had started with debt.
Olivia owed millions.
Ashley had business debts.
Daniel had gambling losses.
They created the shell company to disguise transfers.
But then the opportunity grew.
My company was about to close a massive acquisition.
If they could force me out, they could gain access to a much larger pool of assets.
“How was custody part of the plan?” Mara asked.
Richard answered.
“Daniel would appear stable.”
“And Sarah?”
“Overworked. Emotional. Frequently away.”
“And Emma?”
“A reason to pressure Sarah.”
My hands shook.
“What were they planning?”
Richard stared at the table.
“Temporary custody.”
“And after that?”
“They intended to negotiate.”
“Negotiate what?”
“Financial control.”
He looked up.
“Your husband wanted you to transfer certain assets voluntarily.”
I felt nauseous.
“And if I refused?”
Silence.
Richard finally said:
“Then they would use the life insurance policy.”
The room went quiet.
Mara asked:
“How?”
Richard's answer was barely audible.
“Make sure she couldn't change it.”
I stared at him.
“Make sure I couldn't change it?”
He nodded.
“How?”
Richard looked away.
“I don't know all the details.”
That wasn't good enough.
But it was enough to make me understand how serious this had become.
This was no longer just about divorce.
It was about people who had planned for every outcome.
Except one.
Me fighting back.
At 11:58 p.m., I returned home.
There was a note under my apartment door.
No envelope.
Just paper.
Three words.
YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE LOOKED.
I locked the door.
Then I noticed something.
Emma's bedroom window was open.
I knew I had closed it.
I ran inside.
Emma was still asleep.
Safe.
But on her desk was a small black flash drive.
I didn't touch it.
I called Mara.
She arrived fifteen minutes later.
We opened it on a secure computer.
There was one audio recording.
Olivia's voice.
Clear.
Cold.
“Once she signs the papers, Daniel gets control.”
Then another voice.
Richard.
“And the child?”
Olivia answered:
“She's the leverage.”
Then Daniel spoke.
“But what if Sarah refuses?”
Olivia laughed softly.
“She won't.”
The recording ended.
Mara looked at me.
“They thought you would surrender.”
I looked at the screen.
Then I noticed the file creation date.
It was three weeks old.
May you like
And beneath it was another filename.
FINAL CONTINGENCY.
