Chapter 10 - The Name Under the InkWe took the letter to a forensic document specialist.

The erased name could not be read directly.
But the pressure left by the original writing could sometimes be recovered.
Hours later, the specialist sent us a reconstruction.
One name appeared.
Victor Hale.
I didn't know him.
Mara did.
“He's a private investor.”
“Connected to Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Through three companies.”
The same companies that had received money from Olivia Family Care LLC.
Victor had been financing Ashley's business.
Victor had provided loans to Daniel.
Victor had invested in the acquisition tied to my company.
Everything connected.
We searched his history.
He had been sued for fraud.
Several cases had been settled privately.
Then we found something worse.
Victor had owned the property where Olivia Family Care LLC was registered.
It wasn't just a shell company.
It was part of his network.
Mara sat back.
“This reaches beyond your family.”
I knew.
That didn't make it less terrifying.
At 6:00 p.m., I got a call from an unfamiliar woman.
She introduced herself as Natalie.
She had been Daniel's former assistant.
“I need to meet you.”
We arranged a meeting in a crowded restaurant.
Natalie arrived shaking.
She placed a phone on the table.
“I recorded him.”
“Who?”
“Daniel.”
“When?”
“Two months ago.”
She pressed play.
Daniel's voice came through.
“I don't care how.”
A man's voice answered.
Victor.
“You promised me access.”
“You'll get it.”
“And the woman?”
“Sarah will sign eventually.”
“And if she doesn't?”
Silence.
Then Daniel said:
“We have other options.”
I felt sick.
The recording continued.
Victor asked:
“What about the child?”
Daniel answered:
“That's why custody matters.”
Natalie stopped the recording.
She looked at me.
“They were planning to use Emma as pressure.”
“Yes.”
“There was another conversation.”
She played it.
Olivia.
“We can't frighten Sarah too much.”
Victor replied:
“Then frighten her just enough.”
I closed my eyes.
Natalie whispered:
“I quit the next day.”
“Why did you wait to contact me?”
“Because I was scared.”
“You still are.”
“Yes.”
“Then why come now?”
She looked down.
“Because yesterday Daniel asked me to destroy some files.”
“What files?”
“Your company correspondence.”
Mara asked:
“Where are they?”
Natalie reached into her bag.
She removed a folder.
Emails.
Contracts.
Messages.
One email from Victor to Daniel caught my attention.
When the acquisition closes, Sarah loses leverage. Make sure the transfer happens before the board review.
“What acquisition?”
Mara's face changed.
“The one Sarah just closed.”
I stared at her.
The deal I had spent months negotiating.
The deal that would make my company far more valuable.
Victor wanted it.
Daniel wanted it.
And suddenly I understood the urgency.
They weren't waiting years.
They had weeks.
Maybe days.
We returned to the office.
The CFO confirmed that an extraordinary board meeting was scheduled for forty-eight hours later.
The agenda included a review of my executive authority.
Someone had proposed it anonymously.
Mara looked at me.
“They are trying to remove you.”
“Based on what?”
The forged allegations.
Of course.
If the board believed I had mismanaged corporate finances, they could suspend me.
Then Daniel's network could push through an acquisition without me.
Everything suddenly lined up.
Family.
Money.
Company.
Custody.
Insurance.
All pieces of one machine.
Then my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
“Sarah.”
“What do you want?”
“Come home.”
“No.”
“There's something you need to see.”
“What?”
“About your father.”
I went silent.
My father had died when I was thirteen.
“What about him?”
“I know why he died.”
My blood ran cold.
“What did you say?”
“I know what happened.”
“How?”
“I have documents.”
“Send them.”
“No.”
“Then I'm hanging up.”
His voice became urgent.
“Sarah, you deserve to know.”
I paused.
“Where?”
He gave me an address.
An old warehouse.
Mara immediately said:
“Don't go.”
But Daniel added one final sentence.
“Your father didn't die by accident.”
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
My entire childhood had just been turned upside down.
And somewhere inside me, a dangerous question was growing.

Was this story really about my husband's family?
Or had it started long before I ever met Daniel?
