Chapter 14 - The Person Behind the DoorThe insider was the CFO.

But he wasn't alone.

There were two others.

One handled digital access.

Another handled communication with Victor.

They had leaked my travel schedule.

My work calendar.

My return time.

My financial information.

And the night I came home early?

That was supposed to be a surprise.

My unplanned return had broken their timeline.

That was why Daniel panicked.

That was why Olivia reacted so quickly.

That was why Emma ended up on the balcony.

My daughter had not been part of the original plan.

She had been used because I arrived before they were ready.

The realization made me furious.

The legal case moved quickly.

Police arrested Richard.

Victor was charged with multiple financial crimes.

Olivia faced charges related to fraud and document manipulation.

Ashley cooperated with investigators.

Daniel did too.

But cooperation did not erase betrayal.

I filed for divorce.

Not as revenge.

As a boundary.

The hearing lasted two days.

Mara presented everything.

Financial records.

Video.

Audio.

Witness statements.

Forgery analysis.

Insurance documents.

Custody documents.

Corporate evidence.

My father's ledger.

Victor's contract with Daniel.

The courtroom was silent when the contract was read aloud.

Daniel looked at the floor.

I never looked at him.

At the end, the judge issued final orders concerning custody and financial responsibility.

Emma remained with me.

Daniel received limited supervised visitation subject to continued review.

The assets transferred without authorization were ordered returned where possible.

The fraudulent accounts were frozen.

The corporate allegations against me collapsed completely.

My professional position was restored.

The trust remained under my control.

And the divorce was granted.

Afterward, Daniel asked to speak with me.

I agreed.

We stood in a quiet hallway.

He looked older.

Smaller.

Nothing like the man I had married.

“I am sorry.”

I looked at him.

“You should have been sorry before the balcony.”

“I know.”

“You watched our daughter cry.”

“I know.”

“You let your family use her.”

“I know.”

“You helped them.”

He nodded.

“I did.”

I waited.

Then asked:

“Did you ever love her?”

Daniel looked at me.

“With everything I had.”

I shook my head.

“Then you should have protected her.”

He had no answer.

I turned away.

Behind me, he said:

“I loved you too.”

I stopped.

Then I said the only thing that mattered.

“Love without protection is just another word people use when they want forgiveness.”

I walked away.

Outside the courthouse, cameras waited.

I ignored them.

Emma was in the car with her babysitter.

When I opened the door, she looked up.

“Mommy!”

I smiled.

“Hi, baby.”

She held up a drawing.

It showed three figures.

Me.

Her.

And a little yellow sun.

“That's us,” she said.

“Yes.”

“Are we safe?”

I looked at her.

“Yes.”

She smiled.

Then she asked:

“Can we go home?”

I kissed her forehead.

“Yes.”

For the first time in months, the word home felt like it meant something again.

But the story was not completely over.

That night, I received an envelope.

No return address.

Inside was one page.

A photograph of Victor.

And beneath it, a sentence.

You stopped the man they sent after you.

I turned the page.

But you never found the person who recruited Daniel.

At the bottom was a name.

My father's old business partner.

A man who had been declared dead twenty years earlier.

I stared at the photograph.

Then the phone rang.

Mara.

“Sarah?”

“What?”

“We found something in Victor's files.”

“What?”

“Your father was right.”

I sat down.

“About what?”

“He wasn't the first target.”

“Who was?”

May you like

There was a pause.

“Your mother.”
