Chapter 14 - THE LAST BETRAYAL“Dad?”

Arthur's expression was impossible to read.

Mom screamed:

“Arthur, no!”

He stepped forward.

“You don't understand.”

I pulled Mason behind me.

“Put the gun down.”

“Claire.”

“You said you loved me.”

“I do.”

“Then lower it.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because this is the only way to end it.”

Daniel stared at him.

“You're Black Meridian.”

Arthur looked at him.

“No.”

“Then why are you pointing a gun at her?”

“Because Samuel lied.”

I turned.

“About what?”

Arthur looked at Mason.

“Your son is not the heir.”

My stomach tightened.

“Then who?”

“You.”

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“The archive was designed for you.”

“But it recognized Mason.”

“Because Mason is the second key.”

“What does that mean?”

Arthur lowered the gun.

“For decades, Black Meridian has searched for the original bloodline.”

“Mine?”

“Your grandfather altered it.”

“How?”

“He embedded the final authorization into you.”

I shook my head.

“That makes no sense.”

Arthur looked at Mom.

“She knows.”

Mom began to cry.

“Claire, your grandfather used experimental gene therapy before you were born.”

My body went cold.

“What did he do?”

“He altered your genetic markers.”

“To what?”

“To make you compatible with the archive.”

I stared.

“All my life
”

“You were the archive.”

The words shattered me.

Arthur continued.

“Mason can open the system.”

“You control it.”

“Yes.”

“Then what is left?”

Arthur's voice broke.

“Choice.”

He looked at me.

“The system requires both of you.”

“Me and Mason.”

“Yes.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Then the Black Meridian network needs them.”

Arthur shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward the tunnel.

“They need to believe they do.”

I didn't understand.

“Why?”

“Because we can destroy the network only if they gather.”

A distant explosion shook the building.

Arthur looked at his watch.

“They're coming.”

“Who?”

“Everyone.”

The tunnel doors opened.

Hundreds of files began transmitting.

Every corrupt member of Black Meridian had been given the same message.

THE HEIR IS HERE.

They were coming for me.

For Mason.

For the archive.

Arthur handed me the gun.

I stared.

“What are you doing?”

“Giving you the choice I never had.”

“What choice?”

“Destroy it.”

“Destroy what?”

“Black Meridian.”

“How?”

He pointed toward the central console.

“Use the final authorization.”

I looked at Mason.

He stepped forward.

I knelt beside him.

“Are you scared?”

He nodded.

“So am I.”

I kissed his forehead.

“But we're together.”

We walked to the console.

Dad placed his hand beside mine.

Daniel stood behind us.

Mom watched.

Samuel appeared at the end of the tunnel.

He wasn't carrying a weapon.

He looked exhausted.

“Claire.”

I turned.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“About me.”

“Yes.”

“And Mason.”

“Yes.”

“You let them chase us.”

“I needed them exposed.”

I looked at the console.

“Will this kill anyone?”

“No.”

“Will it destroy the system?”

“Yes.”

“Everything?”

“Everything.”

I touched the screen.

A final warning appeared.

THIS ACTION CANNOT BE UNDONE.

I looked at my family.

My father.

My mother.

My son.

Even Daniel.

Then I pressed the button.

The screen went white.

Every Black Meridian file opened simultaneously.

Every secret.

Every name.

Every account.

Every hidden contract.

Every order.

Every crime.

Broadcast worldwide.

Phones exploded with notifications.

News stations interrupted programming.

Governments lost control of the narrative.

The network collapsed in real time.

And somewhere far away, someone screamed.

The console displayed one final message.

BLACK MERIDIAN TERMINATED.

I exhaled.

It was over.

Then Mason grabbed my hand.

“Mama.”

“What?”

He pointed toward the screen.

One last file had appeared.

Untouched.

Locked.

The name on it was mine.

CLAIRE MERCER.

I stared.

My mother's face went white.

Samuel whispered:

“No.”

I opened the file.

Inside was a photograph.

My mother.

A newborn baby.

And another woman.

A woman I had never seen.

Underneath the photograph were four words:

BIOLOGICAL MOTHER: VANESSA MERCER.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was standing in the doorway.

Crying.

She whispered:

“I'm sorry.”

May you like

Then the file displayed one final sentence.

CLAIRE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO SURVIVE.
