Chapter 11 - MY REAL FATHERWe reached the emergency command center at 3:06 a.m.

Daniel was alive.
Mason was asleep.
The city was burning in places, but emergency crews were already responding.
Black Meridian had been exposed.
News channels were reporting the leak.
Politicians were denying everything.
Stock markets were collapsing.
But I wasn't watching any of it.
I was watching my father.
âYou're going to tell me.â
He sat across from me.
âYes.â
âThe truth.â
âYes.â
âWho is my real father?â
He stared at the floor.
Then he said:
âSamuel.â
I stopped breathing.
âNo.â
âHe was your biological father.â
I stood.
âYou lied to me my entire life.â
âI was trying to protect you.â
âYou stole my father.â
âI raised you.â
âThat doesn't answer the question.â
He closed his eyes.
âYour mother was pregnant when Samuel disappeared.â
My hands shook.
âDid Mom know?â
âYes.â
âDid Samuel know?â
âYes.â
âThen why did he leave?â
âHe didn't.â
I froze.
âWhat?â
âSamuel never abandoned you.â
I couldn't speak.
My father continued.
âVictor Mercer wanted your bloodline.â
âAnd Samuel?â
âHe tried to hide you.â
âFrom whom?â
âBlack Meridian.â
I laughed bitterly.
âThen why did you say he was dead?â
âBecause someone had to disappear.â
âWhy not you?â
âBecause they needed someone inside the system.â
I stared.
âYou became one of them.â
âFor years.â
âTo destroy them.â
âYou failed.â
âYes.â
The word hung there.
Then the door opened.
Daniel stood there, pale and weak.
âClaire.â
I looked at him.
âI owe you an apology.â
âYou owe me more than that.â
âI know.â
âDid you know Samuel was my father?â
He nodded.
âWhen?â
âBefore we married.â
The words hit harder than any slap.
âYou knew.â
âYes.â
âAnd you still married me.â
âThey told me to.â
âWho?â
âMy father.â
Daniel stepped closer.
âHe wanted access to your family.â
âDid you ever love me?â
He looked at me.
âYes.â
I hated that the answer still hurt.
âThen why betray me?â
âBecause I thought I could control the situation.â
âYou couldn't.â
âNo.â
He looked at Mason.
âI was wrong.â
Suddenly Mason woke.
âMama?â
I rushed to him.
He looked frightened.
âWhere's Grandpa?â
âHere.â
Dad walked over.
Mason reached for him.
My father hugged him.
Then Mason whispered:
âGrandpa, the bad man came to me.â
Dad froze.
âWhen?â
âIn the helicopter.â
âWhat did he say?â
Mason looked at me.
âHe said Daddy wasn't my daddy.â
Silence.
Daniel turned pale.
I stared at my son.
âWhat exactly did he say?â
Mason frowned.
âHe saidâŠâ
A pause.
âHe said I wasn't supposed to be born.â
My stomach dropped.
Dad looked horrified.
âWhy?â
Mason pointed at Daniel.
âBecause Daddy gave them Mommy's baby papers.â
Daniel's face went white.
âWhat?â
I turned toward him.
âDid you?â
He stared.
âNo.â
Mason's voice trembled.
âThey showed me.â
I felt sick.
Dad looked at Daniel.
âYour father may have altered the records.â
âWhat records?â
âThe adoption files.â
âI wasn't adopted.â
Dad didn't answer.
My stomach twisted.
âDadâŠâ
He looked at me.
âYou were.â
The room disappeared.
âWhat?â
âYour mother couldn't have children.â
I stared.
âThat isn't true.â
âShe carried you after a procedure.â
âThen whyâŠâ
He hesitated.
âBecause you were born from a surrogate.â
âWhose egg?â
He didn't answer.
I already knew.
I whispered:
âVanessa.â
Dad closed his eyes.
âNo.â
âYes.â
He looked at me.
âI don't understand.â
âVanessa is your biological aunt.â
My blood froze.
âWhat?â
âYour father is Samuel.â
âThen VanessaâŠâ
âIs Samuel's daughter.â
Everything suddenly connected.
She wasn't just an enemy.
She was family.
Mason's bloodline came from Samuel.
The archive came from my grandfather.
Black Meridian had spent decades hunting the wrong generation.
They wanted me.
Then Mason was born.
And suddenly the line had continued.
I looked toward the television.
Breaking news flashed across the screen.
The headline read:
MYSTERIOUS WOMAN CLAIMS TO HAVE EVIDENCE OF THE HALE BLOODLINE.
Below it was Vanessa's face.
She was standing on live television.
She looked directly into the camera.
âClaire,â she said.
I stopped breathing.
âYou think this is over.â
She smiled.
âIt hasn't even started.â
Then she held up a photograph.
My mother's photograph.
Alive.
Beside her stood Samuel.
My heart shattered.
May you like
Vanessa spoke the final sentence.
âYour mother is with us.â
