Chapter 13 - THE CHOICEâMom, move!â

We dragged Dad toward the exit.
The tactical team carried Daniel.
The countdown continued.
Thirty seconds.
Twenty-nine.
Twenty-eight.
Outside, helicopters circled.
Then one exploded in midair.
The blast rocked the station.
Mom grabbed my hand.
âThere's another exit.â
âWhere?â
âUnder the stage.â
We ran.
Dad was barely conscious.
Daniel stumbled beside us.
The floor shook.
Twenty seconds.
Mom kicked open a hidden panel.
A staircase descended.
We ran down.
Ten seconds.
Nine.
Eight.
Seven.
Six.
Then silence.
We waited.
Nothing happened.
I looked up.
âWhy didn't it explode?â
Mom smiled sadly.
âBecause it wasn't a bomb.â
âWhat?â
âIt was a test.â
âOf what?â
âWhether you'd choose your family over the archive.â
My blood went cold.
Someone stepped into the tunnel.
Vanessa.
She was holding a gun.
âExactly.â
I stared.
âYou set this up?â
âYes.â
âWhy?â
âBecause I needed to know what kind of woman you were.â
I stood between her and Mason.
âYou kidnapped my mother.â
âTo force you here.â
âYou tried to kill us.â
âTo frighten you.â
âYou nearly killed my father.â
Vanessa's face softened.
âI never wanted Arthur dead.â
âThen why?â
âBecause he knew the truth.â
âWhat truth?â
She lowered the gun.
âMy father was not the leader of Black Meridian.â
âThen who?â
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
âHis father.â
Daniel stared.
âBut he's dead.â
âNo.â
Vanessa shook her head.
âHe died fourteen years ago.â
I looked at Mom.
She nodded.
âHe was there when I gave birth to you.â
My stomach tightened.
âWhat did he want?â
âTo create a bloodline capable of controlling the archive.â
I looked at Mason.
âAnd he got what he wanted.â
Vanessa shook her head.
âHe didn't know about Mason.â
âThen why target him?â
âBecause after you married Daniel, the archive system registered a new descendant.â
Mason.
My son.
The perfect key.
I looked at Daniel.
He was crying.
âI didn't know.â
Vanessa looked at him.
âYou were supposed to bring Claire to the archive.â
âI did.â
âYou were supposed to open it.â
âI did.â
âYou were supposed to kill Mason.â
Daniel stepped forward.
âI refused.â
Vanessa stared.
âThat is why your father planned your death.â
Daniel froze.
âMy father ordered the attack?â
âYes.â
The tunnel shook.
A voice echoed behind us.
âNot quite.â
Everyone turned.
A man walked out of the darkness.
Older.
Elegant.
Calm.
Daniel stopped breathing.
âDad?â
The man smiled.
âYes.â
Daniel staggered backward.
âYou died.â
âI wanted you to believe that.â
He looked at me.
âClaire.â
My blood froze.
âYou know my name.â
âI funded your childhood.â
Mom stepped forward.
âYou.â
He smiled.
âYou're older now.â
My mother grabbed my arm.
âDon't listen to him.â
He looked at Mason.
âSo this is the heir.â
Mason clung to me.
Daniel moved between us.
His father raised a gun.
Daniel did too.
âYou won't touch him.â
His father laughed.
âYou still think you're my son.â
âWhat?â
âYou're a test subject.â
Daniel's face went white.
âYou were never born naturally.â
Silence.
âYour mother was selected.â
âFor what?â
âGenetic compatibility.â
Daniel looked sick.
âYou used me.â
âI created you.â
I stared at the man.
âYou created Daniel?â
âThrough controlled genetic selection.â
My stomach turned.
âWhy?â
âTo study inheritance.â
âThe archive.â
He nodded.
âThe original bloodline was too unstable.â
âSo you created replacements.â
âYes.â
âAnd Mason?â
He smiled.
âThe most successful one.â
I pulled Mason closer.
âNo.â
He raised his gun.
âGive me the boy.â
Daniel stepped forward.
âNo.â
Gunfire erupted.
Daniel shot his father.
The man stumbled.
Vanessa fired.
Security returned fire.
The tunnel became chaos.
I grabbed Mason.
We ran.
Mom followed.
Behind us, Daniel screamed.
I turned.
His father was dying.
Daniel was kneeling beside him.
The man whispered something.
Daniel looked up.
âClaire!â
âWhat?â
He shouted:
âHe's not my father.â
I froze.
âThen who is he?â
Daniel looked toward the darkness.
âThe real leader.â
A second figure appeared.
Someone I had never expected.
My father.
Arthur.
Standing.
Alive.
May you like
Holding a gun.
And pointing it at me.
