Chapter 14 - For twenty years, I had believed my father was dead. The idea that he might be alive should have brought happiness.

Instead, I felt fear.
Because everything about the photograph was wrong.
The clothes.
The room.
The expression on his face.
It wasn't a reunion.
It was a warning.
Dominic immediately shook his head.
“No.”
I looked at him.
“I have to know.”
“You don't know whether it's real.”
“Nico?”
He examined the image.
“It's not edited.”
Gabriel stepped closer.
“Could be generated?”
Nico shook his head.
“Not with this metadata.”
“Then it's real.”
Luca sighed.
“Which means your father may have survived.”
We followed the location embedded in the photograph.
A private clinic on the outskirts of the city.
Abandoned.
Its records had been deleted.
The building was empty.
Except for one room.
I entered alone.
My father sat beside a window.
Older.
Thinner.
Gray hair.
But unmistakable.
I stopped.
He looked at me.
“Hello, Elena.”
I couldn't move.
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because someone needed to protect you.”
I laughed through tears.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had to.”
“Everyone lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“You too.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He looked down.
“Because I created the monster.”
Project M.
The network.
The trust.
The families.
All of it.
“I thought I could control powerful men by knowing their secrets.”
He paused.
“I was wrong.”
I sat across from him.
“Then why was I the key?”
“Because you were the one person I knew would never use it for power.”
I looked at him.
“Until tonight.”
He smiled.
“You didn't.”
“You destroyed it.”
“I watched.”
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Evelyn.”
I looked toward the doorway.
She stepped inside.
Samuel was behind her.
Then Dominic and my brothers arrived.
Everyone froze when they saw my father.
My mother began crying.
Richard looked at her.
“You shouldn't have come.”
She whispered,
“I had to.”
He stood slowly.
“After all these years.”
She reached toward him.
He stepped back.
“Don't.”
The moment was brutal.
No romance.
No reunion.
Just two people carrying twenty years of damage.
I looked at my father.
“Why did you let Adrian marry me?”
His expression changed.
“I didn't.”
“Then who did?”
He looked at Samuel.
“Victor.”
Samuel lowered his head.
“And Margaret.”
My father nodded.
“Victor wanted control.”
“Margaret wanted Adrian protected.”
“Samuel wanted Project M restored.”
“Evelyn wanted the truth.”
I looked at each person.
“And you?”
Richard looked at me.
“I wanted you free.”
He handed me a small envelope.
I opened it.
Inside was the original trust agreement.
No hidden clauses.
No transfer.
No beneficiary changes.
Only one sentence.
This trust belongs to Elena Moretti. It cannot be controlled by marriage. It cannot be transferred by coercion. It cannot be inherited through her death.
I looked up.
“Then why did everyone believe otherwise?”
“Because they saw copies.”
“Forgeries.”
“Yes.”
Adrian entered behind Dominic.
My father looked at him.
For the first time, his expression softened.
“You protected her.”
Adrian answered,
“I failed her.”
Richard nodded.
“That is different.”
I looked at Adrian.
He looked at the floor.
“I know what I did.”
My father turned toward me.
“You don't owe him forgiveness.”
“I know.”
“You don't owe anyone forgiveness.”
I nodded.
Then he said,
“But decide what you want.”
I looked at him.
“For the first time in my life.”
He smiled.
“Yes.”
Outside, police arrived.
Margaret was arrested.
Victor, barely alive, was taken into custody.
My mother surrendered.
Samuel disappeared before authorities could reach him.
Evelyn stayed.
She gave investigators everything.
The network was gone.
But the evidence already transmitted would remain.
The next weeks were chaos.
News exploded.
Financial investigations began.
Shell companies were frozen.
Criminal cases were opened.
The Cole family's public empire collapsed under investigations into fraud and coercion.
Vanessa was arrested for conspiracy.
Margaret faced multiple charges.
My mother confessed to her role in the cover-up of my father's death.
And Adrian?
He turned himself in voluntarily.
He gave prosecutors everything he knew.
I visited him once.
Only once.
We sat across from each other through glass.
He looked tired.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
“I did love you.”
I looked at him.
“I believe you.”
His eyes filled.
“But I also know love doesn't erase what happened.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
When I stood to leave, he said,
“Elena.”
I turned.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For proving I wasn't what they made me.”
I smiled sadly.
“You were never what they made you.”
I walked away.
For the first time, I wasn't someone's wife.
Someone's daughter.
Someone's sister.
Someone's target.
I was Elena.
That was enough.
Or at least I thought it was.
Until I returned to the Moretti estate.
My father's study had been restored.
On the desk sat one final envelope.
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
My father.
Me.
Adrian.
And another child.
A little boy.
I stared at the photograph.
On the back was written:
ONE MORE HEIR.
My heart stopped.
Then beneath it, one sentence.
He was born after I disappeared.
I looked at the date.
Six years ago.
And suddenly I understood.
May you like
Project M had never been about two heirs.
There were three.
