Chapter 9 - THE VAULTThe vault was beneath an abandoned bank outside Pittsburgh.

Daniel found the location using the number on the key.
Vault 15.
My father's handwriting appeared on the old access log.
My name was beside it.
The date was the day I turned eighteen.
I had no memory of ever being there.
“You weren't,” my mother said.
“Then who opened it?”
“Your father.”
He had apparently transferred everything into my name when I was still a teenager.
Then hidden the documents.
The bank manager led us downstairs.
A metal corridor.
Rows of vaults.
A final door.
I inserted the key.
Nothing happened.
Daniel frowned.
“Try again.”
I turned it.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
Inside were boxes.
Dozens.
Each labeled with dates.
I found one with my name.
Anna Mercer.
My hands shook.
Inside was a passport.
My original birth certificate.
A trust agreement.
Photographs.
And a videotape.
Daniel found an old player in the bank archives.
We watched.
My father's face appeared on screen.
Older.
Exhausted.
Terrified.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Anna, if you're watching this, someone has already betrayed us.”
My heart pounded.
He explained that he had discovered a network of illegal transfers.
But the real problem wasn't the money.
It was evidence.
Records tying powerful business leaders to the network.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
And one recurring figure.
Ethan Vale.
Derek's old identity.
Then my father's voice became quieter.
“Ethan believes he can control everything.”
He paused.
“He cannot.”
A second man appeared in the recording.
Derek.
Young.
Cold.
He stood behind my father.
I covered my mouth.
“Dad…”
On the recording, Derek said:
“Where is the trust?”
My father laughed.
“Where you will never find it.”
Derek moved toward him.
The video shook.
Then my father said:
“Anna doesn't know.”
Derek answered:
“She will.”
The screen went black.
Silence.
Rachel was crying.
Daniel looked at me.
“That may be enough to reopen the investigation.”
“There has to be more.”
We searched the boxes.
Under the floor of the vault, Daniel found a metal panel.
Inside was a small recorder.
He turned it on.
My father's voice.
But this recording was different.
“Evelyn is not my enemy.”
I looked at my mother.
“She knew.”
My mother nodded.
“She helped him?”
“Yes.”
Then my father's voice continued.
“The real betrayal came from inside the family.”
A pause.
“Someone sold information about Anna.”
My mother whispered:
“That's what I never told you.”
“What?”
“I wasn't the one who told Derek where you were.”
My stomach dropped.
“Then who?”
Before she could answer, the vault door slammed shut.
The lights went out.
Rachel screamed.
Daniel pulled out his flashlight.
I heard breathing.
Not ours.
Someone was inside the vault with us.
Then a voice whispered from the darkness.
“You should have left the fifteen dollars on the counter.”
Derek.
I spun around.
He stood behind us.
A gun was in his hand.
My mother stepped forward.
“You won't hurt her.”
Derek smiled.
“I've spent seven years protecting her.”
I stared at him.
“Protecting me?”
“Yes.”
“From what?”
He looked at the boxes.
“From the truth.”
Then he looked at me.
“And from the people who will kill you when they realize what your father left you.”
Daniel moved subtly toward the emergency release.
Derek noticed.
“Don't.”
We froze.
He looked at me.
“Give me the recorder.”
“No.”
“Anna.”
“No.”
His face hardened.
“You think this is about money.”
“Isn't it?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“Then what?”
Derek looked at my daughter, sleeping in Rachel's arms.
Then he said:
“Emily.”
My blood froze.
“What about her?”
May you like
He lowered the gun slightly.
“Your daughter was never supposed to exist.”
