Chapter 3 - THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCHSamuel Reed never entered my hospital room.

Security stopped him downstairs.

But that didn't make me feel safer.

It made me more afraid.

A man who wanted to see my daughter wasn't supposed to know where we were.

A stranger wasn't supposed to know her name.

And Samuel wasn't a stranger to Derek.

He was somewhere inside the machinery of my husband's life.

I spent the night staring at the door.

Rachel barely slept.

At 6:14 a.m., she finally said, “We need to leave.”

I looked at Emily.

“We can't take her out yet.”

“The doctor says she’s healthy.”

“I know.”

“Then we're going.”

Rachel was right.

Staying in that hospital felt like waiting inside a locked room while someone searched the building for the key.

Before we left, a nurse gave me a stack of documents.

Birth certificate forms.

Insurance papers.

Discharge instructions.

Insurance.

I froze.

“What insurance?”

The nurse looked confused.

“Your husband's plan.”

I shook my head.

“I don't have access to it.”

She checked again.

“It says your daughter was added to the policy before birth.”

My stomach twisted.

“By whom?”

“Your husband.”

I looked at Rachel.

“Derek never told me.”

The nurse handed me the paperwork.

Something was wrong.

The policy number.

The dependent information.

Even my address.

All correct.

But there was a second address listed.

A Pennsylvania address.

I stared at it.

“What's this?”

The nurse pointed.

“Mailing address.”

The address belonged to a house in Pittsburgh.

Rachel looked at me.

“That’s not my address.”

“No,” I whispered.

It was another house.

One I had never seen.

We left through the back entrance.

Rachel drove.

Emily slept in her car seat.

I held the paperwork on my lap.

For the first time since leaving Derek, I wasn't thinking about divorce.

I was thinking about fraud.

The Pennsylvania address haunted me.

Why would Derek put it on my insurance?

Why would he know about a house I had never seen?

Why did Samuel Reed know my location?

And why had Derek already arranged Emily's insurance before she was born?

Two hours later, we reached Rachel's house.

She parked in the garage and closed the door behind us.

Then she checked the street through the blinds.

“Paranoid?” I asked.

“Careful.”

She helped me upstairs.

Emily slept.

For three hours, nothing happened.

Then someone knocked.

Three slow knocks.

Rachel froze.

I held Emily closer.

Another knock.

“Who is it?”

No answer.

Rachel didn't move.

Then a man's voice came through the door.

“I'm not here for you.”

My heart stopped.

Derek.

Rachel looked at me.

The voice came again.

“I'm here to talk.”

I shook my head.

Rachel whispered, “Stay upstairs.”

She stepped toward the door.

“Go away.”

“I know she's inside.”

Rachel's hand tightened around the doorknob.

“She doesn't want to see you.”

“I know.”

The calm in his voice terrified me.

Then he said:

“Tell her the truth about the Mercer account.”

Rachel went completely still.

I stared at her.

“What account?”

She looked back at me.

Derek continued from outside.

“She'll figure it out eventually.”

Rachel opened the door chain.

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

“Then ask her.”

I stepped halfway down the stairs.

“Derek?”

Silence.

Then his voice.

“Congratulations.”

I couldn't see his face through the narrow opening.

“What do you want?”

“To make sure you're safe.”

“You left me in labor.”

“I made a mistake.”

“You gave me fifteen dollars.”

“I was angry.”

“You weren't coming.”

“I was.”

“No.”

Silence.

Then:

“Give me my daughter.”

“She isn't yours to take.”

His voice dropped.

“She is exactly mine.”

I felt Emily stirring upstairs.

Derek continued.

“You think you know what happened?”

“I know enough.”

“No, you don't.”

“What does that mean?”

He leaned closer to the door.

“You think this is about our marriage.”

I said nothing.

“It isn't.”

My pulse raced.

“What are you talking about?”

“Ask Rachel.”

Then he walked away.

Rachel closed the door.

I stared at her.

“What does he know?”

She didn't answer.

“Rachel.”

She sat down.

“There is something I didn't tell you.”

My chest tightened.

“What?”

She looked terrified.

“I found the Mercer account because I was looking through your old email.”

“And?”

“The account isn't in your name by accident.”

“What is it?”

Rachel swallowed.

“It was opened the week before you met Derek.”

I frowned.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

She showed me the document.

At the bottom was a signature.

My name.

My handwriting.

I stared at it.

I knew that signature.

I also knew I had never signed that document.

Then I noticed something else.

The date.

Three days before I met Derek.

I looked at Rachel.

“Who was I supposed to meet that week?”

Rachel went pale.

“You don't remember?”

“No.”

“You told me you were meeting someone.”

“Who?”

She stared at the paper.

“Derek.”

My entire body went cold.

“That wasn't Derek.”

Rachel shook her head.

“No.”

“Then who was it?”

May you like

She whispered the name.

“Samuel Reed.”
