Chapter 13 - THE HEIRWe moved again.

New house.

New phones.

New security.

Daniel arranged protection.

Rachel barely left Emily alone.

I barely slept.

And yet every night, the same question kept returning.

Why me?

Why had my father hidden everything?

Why had my mother disappeared?

Why had Derek married me?

Why had Samuel watched me?

The answer arrived through an old recording.

My father had left a second message.

This time, it was meant for me.

He explained that the Mercer fortune had never been just money.

It was leverage.

The trust controlled shares in dozens of companies.

Those companies controlled transportation, logistics, banking, and communications.

Whoever controlled the trust could influence an entire network of businesses.

My grandfather had built it.

My father had tried to dismantle it.

Then my father revealed the final secret.

The trust could only be activated by two signatures.

One from the Mercer bloodline.

One from the person who had been appointed guardian.

My mother had the first half.

Derek had the second.

I understood.

They weren't random.

My father had planned everything.

Derek hadn't married me for the money.

He had married me because he had been assigned to protect me.

But somewhere along the way, he had chosen control over protection.

Or maybe he had never been capable of telling the difference.

The legal documents revealed one more condition.

The trust would pass fully to Emily when she turned eighteen.

Until then, I was her guardian.

That made Emily the target.

I looked at Rachel.

“We have to disappear.”

“We've already disappeared.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“Not from Derek.”

“Then who?”

“Everyone.”

Daniel agreed.

The plan was to leave the state.

We packed quietly.

Before dawn, a convoy left the house.

Two vehicles.

Security ahead.

We believed we were safe.

Then the first vehicle stopped.

A tree had fallen across the road.

Daniel stepped out.

“Back up!”

Too late.

Another vehicle appeared behind us.

Black.

Unmarked.

Rachel locked the doors.

I pulled Emily against my chest.

The black vehicle stopped.

A man stepped out.

Richard Mercer.

My grandfather.

He looked older than the photographs.

But his eyes were sharp.

He walked toward us.

“I don't want the baby.”

I stared.

“Then what do you want?”

“You.”

“Why?”

“Because you're the only person who can unlock the trust.”

“I won't.”

He smiled.

“You don't have a choice.”

Daniel moved between us.

Richard looked at him.

“You're a lawyer.”

“Yes.”

“Then you know what happens when a person refuses an inheritance tied to a trust.”

I didn't understand.

Daniel's face changed.

He whispered:

“Anna, the trust isn't voluntary.”

“What?”

“It may contain legal conditions.”

Richard smiled.

“You see?”

He knew.

“You've been watching us.”

“Of course.”

“Since when?”

“Since the night you left the house.”

I thought about Derek.

The fifteen dollars.

The ring.

The rain.

Everything suddenly felt like part of a plan I couldn't see.

Richard stepped closer.

“Your husband made one mistake.”

“What?”

“He fell in love with you.”

Silence.

I looked at him.

“He was supposed to manipulate you.”

Richard smiled.

“Instead, he chose you.”

I felt something crack inside me.

Derek had loved me?

After everything?

Richard continued.

“That's why I had him removed.”

“What?”

“Your father.”

My blood froze.

“Derek didn't kill my father.”

“No.”

Richard's smile disappeared.

“I did.”

The world stopped.

“You killed him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he refused to surrender the trust.”

“And my mother?”

“She ran.”

“Lucas?”

“He betrayed me.”

“Samuel?”

“Useful.”

“Derek?”

“Disposable.”

I stared at him.

“You used everyone.”

“Yes.”

“And me?”

“You were always the heir.”

He reached for the car door.

“You have twenty-four hours.”

“For what?”

“Sign the transfer.”

“And if I don't?”

He looked at Emily.

“If you don't, the people protecting you will start disappearing.”

Then he walked away.

I watched him leave.

And something inside me changed.

For years, I had survived by running.

May you like

Now I had something to protect.

And I finally knew who I was running from.
