Chapter 8: The Press Conference

By noon, every major news network had interrupted its regular programming.

Financial channels.

National broadcasters.

International media.

All carried the same live banner across the bottom of the screen.

BREAKING NEWS: JONATHAN ASHCROFT TO ADDRESS THE PUBLIC

For twelve years, Jonathan Ashcroft had refused interviews.

He had declined magazine covers.

He had ignored award ceremonies.

His philosophy had always been simple.

"If your work is meaningful, it doesn't need your face."

So when word spread that he had called a press conference with less than three hours' notice, journalists flew in from New York, London, Singapore, Tokyo, and Dubai.

Whatever he was about to say would reshape more than one family.

It could reshape markets.

The Ashcroft International Conference Center had never hosted so many reporters.

More than three hundred journalists filled the auditorium.

Hundreds more watched from overflow rooms.

Television cameras formed a forest of black lenses aimed at the stage.

At precisely one o'clock, the lights dimmed.

The room fell silent.

Jonathan Ashcroft stepped onto the stage.

He wore the same navy suit he had worn the previous night.

No prepared smile.

No theatrical entrance.

Only quiet confidence.

He walked to the podium, adjusted the microphone, and looked across the audience.

"Good afternoon."

His voice carried easily through the hall.

"I have avoided public statements for many years because I believe businesses should be judged by their actions rather than their publicity."

He paused.

"Today is different."

Across the city, Kyle watched from a small conference room in his attorney's office.

The television volume was turned low.

No one spoke.

Kyle's legal team sat around him, waiting.

He wasn't.

He knew nothing they could say would matter if Jonathan chose to reveal everything.

Back at the conference...

Jonathan continued.

"Many rumors have circulated during the last twelve hours."

"Some are true."

"Some are incomplete."

"And some are entirely false."

He looked directly into the nearest camera.

"I am here to discuss facts."

No one interrupted.

The first journalist stood.

"Mr. Ashcroft, is it true that your daughter is the woman involved in last night's incident?"

"Yes."

"Has she agreed to speak publicly?"

"No."

"Why not?"

Jonathan answered without hesitation.

"Because healing is not a performance."

A murmur of approval swept through the room.

Another reporter stood.

"Did your family secretly finance Vale Holdings?"

"Yes."

The single word caused dozens of reporters to begin typing furiously.

Jonathan raised one hand.

"We did so through lawful financial institutions and disclosed investment structures."

"There was nothing illegal."

"The arrangements remained private because that was my daughter's wish."

Another question came immediately.

"Did Kyle Vale know?"

"No."

Jonathan answered calmly.

"He believed he had earned every opportunity through his own efforts."

A reporter frowned.

"But didn't he?"

Jonathan nodded.

"He worked hard."

"He possessed intelligence."

"He displayed remarkable determination."

The room became quiet.

Then Jonathan added,

"Hard work deserves opportunity."

"It does not excuse cruelty."

Kyle lowered his head.

Even now...

Jonathan refused to erase everything he had accomplished.

He acknowledged the good while condemning the unforgivable.

That hurt more than hatred would have.

The next question came from an investigative journalist.

"Did your daughter hide her identity to test Mr. Vale?"

Jonathan smiled faintly.

"No."

"She hid nothing."

The room looked confused.

He continued.

"My daughter answered every question she was asked honestly."

"Mr. Vale simply stopped asking."

Silence.

Jonathan let the sentence settle.

"Love requires curiosity."

"When curiosity disappears..."

"So does understanding."

The quote spread across social media within minutes.

Millions shared it before the conference had even ended.

A financial correspondent stood.

"What happens to Vale Holdings now?"

Jonathan folded his hands.

"Nothing."

The reporters exchanged puzzled looks.

He clarified.

"I have no intention of acquiring the company."

No one expected that answer.

"Our investments exist to protect employees, suppliers, and pension funds."

"Not to satisfy personal revenge."

Another reporter quickly asked,

"So Ashcroft International will not dismantle Vale Holdings?"

"No."

"We will not destroy thousands of innocent careers because one man made catastrophic choices."

In the front row, several business journalists nodded.

That single statement immediately calmed investors.

Markets hated uncertainty.

Jonathan had just removed a great deal of it.

Meanwhile...

Back at the estate, Evelyn watched the conference alone from the library.

She smiled sadly.

Her father had always been like this.

Firm.

Measured.

Never allowing anger to become policy.

A knock interrupted her thoughts.

The butler entered.

"Miss Ashcroft."

"There's someone at the gate."

Evelyn frowned.

"Who?"

"He refuses to leave."

She walked to the security monitor.

The screen showed Kyle.

He stood alone outside the massive wrought-iron gates.

No bodyguards.

No luxury motorcade.

No reporters beside him.

Just one man.

Holding a small wooden box.

The head of security asked,

"Shall we remove him?"

Evelyn remained silent.

On the monitor, Kyle looked thinner than he had only a day earlier.

Exhaustion lined his face.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

For the first time in years...

He looked like the young entrepreneur she had met before success changed him.

Not because he had regained his innocence.

But because he had lost everything else.

At the press conference, another reporter asked the question everyone had been waiting for.

"Mr. Ashcroft..."

"Will your family pursue criminal charges?"

The room became completely silent.

Jonathan looked toward the cameras.

"The decision does not belong to me."

"It belongs to my daughter."

Another journalist immediately asked,

"If she asks for prosecution..."

"Will you support her?"

Jonathan answered without hesitation.

"I will support whatever decision allows her to live without fear."

Those words reached the estate moments later.

Evelyn stared at the security monitor.

Kyle was still waiting outside the gates.

He made no attempt to enter.

He simply stood there.

Patiently.

Almost as though he knew he no longer had the right to ask for anything.

The security officer spoke again.

"Miss Ashcroft?"

She took a slow breath.

"Open the pedestrian gate."

The officer hesitated.

"Are you certain?"

"Yes."

"But don't let him into the estate."

A narrow side gate unlocked with a metallic click.

Kyle looked up.

The gate opened only halfway.

Evelyn stepped onto the stone pathway inside the property.

Nearly twenty meters separated them.

Neither crossed the distance.

Kyle looked at her for several long seconds before speaking.

"I didn't come to ask you to come back."

Evelyn remained silent.

"I know that's impossible."

He lifted the small wooden box.

"I came to return something."

He placed the box gently on the ground between them.

"What is it?"

"My wedding ring."

Evelyn looked at her own hand.

She was still wearing hers.

Kyle noticed.

"I'm not asking you to forgive me."

His voice was almost a whisper.

"I just don't deserve to keep mine."

He stepped back.

"I'll leave now."

He turned slowly and began walking toward the road.

Evelyn didn't call after him.

She didn't move.

Only after Kyle disappeared beyond the trees did she walk forward.

She picked up the wooden box.

Inside lay the platinum wedding band.

Beneath it was a folded handwritten letter.

She unfolded the paper.

Her eyes stopped on the first line.

There is one truth I never had the courage to tell you before everything fell apart...

She drew a quiet breath.

May you like

Then began to read.
