Chapter 3: Twelve Witnesses

The words "criminal file" settled over the marble hall like a blade suspended in the air.
No one spoke.
The board members who had stood silently while Evelyn was beaten now looked at one another with growing unease. Minutes earlier, they had believed they were attending the final chapter of a billionaire's divorce.
Instead, they had become witnesses in what was beginning to look like a criminal prosecution.
Jonathan Ashcroft's chief legal counsel placed a thick navy binder onto the dining table.
Unlike the black folder that had revealed Evelyn's identity, this binder carried no family crest.
Across the cover, in plain silver lettering, were two words.
Evidence File.
Kyle stared at it.
"What is that?"
The attorney answered evenly.
"Everything that occurred in this house tonight."
Kyle frowned.
"That's impossible."
Jonathan remained silent.
The attorney opened the binder.
The first page contained a floor plan of the estate.
The second listed timestamps accurate to the second.
The third...
Displayed six different camera angles.
Kyle's eyes widened.
"The cameras..."
"I had them removed."
"You removed the visible cameras," the attorney replied.
"The estate security system contains thirty-two additional concealed cameras installed when the property was built."
Kyle's heart sank.
"I never knew..."
"No."
"You never asked."
One of the security officers stepped forward carrying a slim silver tablet.
The attorney tapped the screen.
The large television mounted above the fireplace came alive.
A timestamp appeared.
7:42 PM
The dinner party.
Guests laughing.
Wine glasses raised.
Kyle smiling.
Thalia sitting beside him instead of beside the other guests.
Then another timestamp.
8:18 PM
Thalia deliberately lifted her wineglass.
"So, Evelyn," she asked sweetly, loud enough for everyone to hear, "have the doctors finally explained why you still can't give Kyle a child?"
The room on the recording fell silent.
Every guest turned toward Evelyn.
The recording continued.
Thalia leaned forward.
"I suppose marrying into money doesn't guarantee motherhood."
Several uncomfortable smiles appeared around the table.
Evelyn calmly replied,
"Whether I have children or not is none of your concern."
Thalia laughed.
"I think it concerns everyone."
"A dynasty needs an heir."
Kyle said nothing.
Not one word.
The attorney paused the recording.
"Mr. Vale."
"Did your wife provoke Miss Morrison at this point?"
Kyle remained silent.
"No," answered one board member quietly.
Everyone looked toward him.
It was Richard Lawson.
The oldest independent director on Vale Holdings' board.
He slowly removed his glasses.
"Evelyn remained perfectly calm."
Kyle stared at him.
"Richard..."
Richard lowered his eyes.
"I won't lie anymore."
The recording resumed.
Thalia stood.
Walked toward Evelyn.
Bent close enough that only nearby guests could hear.
The hidden microphones, however, captured every word.
"Once my baby is born..."
"This house will finally belong to a real family."
Evelyn stood.
"I think you should leave."
Thalia smiled.
Then...
Without warning...
She deliberately spilled an entire glass of red wine across her own dress.
She screamed.
Kyle jumped to his feet.
"Evelyn!"
The footage clearly showed Evelyn standing over a meter away.
She hadn't even touched her.
The television went black.
Silence consumed the hall.
Thalia's face had turned white.
"Kyle..."
"I..."
He slowly looked at her.
"You lied."
She reached toward him.
"I panicked."
"You said she attacked you."
"I..."
Kyle took another step backward.
Jonathan finally spoke.
"The truth has a remarkable memory."
The attorney continued turning pages.
"The next recording begins twelve minutes later."
The screen illuminated again.
Kyle stood in the center of the hall.
Holding the riding crop.
Evelyn stood alone.
One guest quietly asked,
"Perhaps everyone should leave?"
Kyle answered without hesitation.
"No."
"They'll stay."
Another guest asked,
"Why?"
Kyle smiled.
"They're going to witness my wife's consequences."
Every guest in the room lowered their heads.
Hearing those words again made them sound even worse.
The footage continued.
First strike.
Second.
Third.
By the tenth, several guests looked visibly uncomfortable.
By the fifteenth, one woman covered her mouth.
By the twentieth...
Evelyn collapsed to her knees.
Not once did she cry out.
Not once did she beg.
The recording ended.
No one looked at Kyle.
No one wanted to.
The silence had become unbearable.
Jonathan's attorney closed the binder.
"Mr. Vale."
"Do you dispute the authenticity of these recordings?"
Kyle's voice barely existed.
"No."
Another attorney entered the hall carrying a smaller folder.
Jonathan nodded.
"Proceed."
The attorney opened it.
"Three emergency motions have already been prepared."
He placed them on the table.
"First..."
"A petition requesting an immediate protective order for Mrs. Evelyn Ashcroft."
"Second..."
"A civil action seeking damages for assault, emotional distress, and intentional humiliation."
"Third..."
"A criminal complaint supported by audiovisual evidence and twelve eyewitnesses."
Kyle's attorney interrupted.
"This can still be negotiated."
Jonathan slowly turned toward him.
"Counselor."
"Are you advising negotiation..."
"...after witnessing your client publicly assault a woman?"
The attorney closed his mouth.
Kyle's mother finally descended the staircase.
For the first time all evening, she approached Evelyn.
"Evelyn..."
Her voice trembled.
"I..."
She struggled to find words.
"I didn't stop him."
"No," Evelyn answered softly.
"You didn't."
Tears welled in the older woman's eyes.
"I thought..."
"I thought protecting my son meant standing beside him."
Jonathan looked at her.
"No."
"It meant preventing him from becoming this man."
She covered her face.
Years of pride collapsed in a single sentence.
Across the room, Thalia quietly reached for her purse.
She glanced toward the front door.
No one appeared to notice.
She took another careful step.
Then another.
One of the security officers calmly spoke.
"Miss Morrison."
She froze.
"The estate gates have been locked."
Her breathing quickened.
"I wasn't leaving."
The officer simply looked at her.
Neither of them believed the lie.
A black SUV entered through the estate gates.
Then another.
Blue lights flashed silently behind the windshield.
Kyle frowned.
"What now?"
Jonathan looked toward the windows.
"I requested they wait outside until we finished speaking."
Kyle followed his gaze.
Several uniformed police officers stepped out of the vehicles.
Not rushing.
Not shouting.
Simply waiting.
Waiting for authorization.
Jonathan faced Kyle one last time.
"I gave my daughter a choice three years ago."
"I asked whether she wished to inherit my empire..."
"...or build a life with the man she loved."
Kyle lowered his head.
"She chose me."
"She did."
Jonathan's voice carried neither anger nor satisfaction.
"Tonight..."
"You showed her exactly what that choice cost."
Kyle closed his eyes.
For the first time in years...
The billionaire who had spent his life negotiating billion-dollar mergers realized there was no contract left to save him.
Because some debts could never be paid with money.
Outside...
The lead police officer received a phone call.
He listened for several seconds.
Then nodded.
The officers began walking toward the mansion's front entrance.
The massive oak doors slowly opened.
And Kyle Vale understood that this time...
May you like
They had come for him.
