Chapter 6: The Truth He Could Never Outrun

Kyle hit the polished hardwood floor before he realized his knees had given way.
The words echoed through his mind again and again.
"The reason there were never children in this marriage... was Mr. Kyle Vale."
Everything around him became strangely quiet.
He remembered every anniversary.
Every holiday dinner.
Every charity gala where someone had casually asked when the happy couple would announce a pregnancy.
Every time he had smiled politely.
Every time Evelyn had quietly changed the subject.
Every time his mother had blamed Evelyn.
And every single time...
She had protected him.
Inside the library, no one noticed Kyle kneeling outside the half-open door.
Jonathan looked at the legal counsel.
"Continue."
The attorney removed another sealed envelope.
"This contains the complete medical evaluation performed before the marriage."
He placed it carefully on the table.
"The examination was requested by Mr. Jonathan Ashcroft as part of the family's standard legal and financial preparation before marriage."
One executive asked quietly,
"So Miss Ashcroft knew?"
Jonathan answered.
"No."
Several heads turned.
"Evelyn specifically instructed the physicians not to tell her unless it affected Kyle's health."
Evelyn looked surprised.
"I never saw the report."
Jonathan nodded.
"You asked me to keep all medical information private."
"I honored your request."
She slowly remembered.
Three years ago, before the wedding, dozens of examinations had been arranged.
Medical.
Legal.
Financial.
Security.
She had signed every consent form without reading much of the paperwork.
She trusted her father completely.
The attorney continued.
"The report concluded that Mr. Vale suffered from a treatable medical condition affecting fertility."
"It was not permanent."
"It was not life-threatening."
"But treatment would have required several months."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Treatable.
Three years.
Three years lost because no one had ever opened the envelope.
Jonathan folded his hands.
"I intended to discuss it with him privately after the wedding."
"What happened?"
One of the executives asked.
Jonathan smiled sadly.
"He canceled."
The room fell silent.
"He postponed our first meeting."
"Then the second."
"Then the third."
"Eventually..."
"He stopped responding altogether."
Outside the door, Kyle remembered.
Jonathan had invited him repeatedly.
Lunch.
Dinner.
Golf.
Private meetings.
Kyle had politely declined every invitation.
He had believed his father-in-law was merely an elderly businessman wanting to interfere in his life.
Instead...
Jonathan had simply wanted to hand him the truth.
Kyle whispered to himself,
"What have I done..."
Evelyn stared into the fireplace.
A memory surfaced.
Nearly two years into the marriage...
She had found Kyle sitting alone on the balcony after another family dinner.
He looked exhausted.
Ashamed.
"My mother asked again."
Evelyn had sat beside him.
"I know."
"What if..."
He hesitated.
"What if the problem is me?"
She took his hand.
"Then we'll face it together."
Kyle laughed nervously.
"Impossible."
"My family has never had fertility problems."
Evelyn smiled.
"Maybe neither of us does."
He kissed her forehead.
"You're always trying to make me feel better."
She never told him...
She truly believed it.
Back in the present...
That memory shattered him.
Not because she had lied.
Because she hadn't.
She had genuinely believed they would face every problem together.
And he had repaid that loyalty by humiliating her before strangers.
A knock interrupted the meeting.
Jonathan's chief of security entered.
"Sir."
Jonathan looked up.
"Yes?"
"The media has obtained aerial footage of the estate."
"And?"
"They're broadcasting live."
He placed a tablet on the table.
Every major financial network carried the same breaking headline.
ASHCROFT FOUNDER MAKES MIDNIGHT VISIT TO VALE ESTATE
Another channel displayed images of police vehicles.
Another showed reporters gathered outside the gates.
Stock tickers scrolled endlessly across the bottom of the screen.
Vale Holdings shares expected to open sharply lower.
One executive asked,
"Should we issue a public statement immediately?"
Jonathan shook his head.
"No."
"Truth should never race rumors."
He looked toward Evelyn.
"It should simply arrive."
Meanwhile...
Thalia sat alone in the guest lounge.
No one had spoken to her for almost an hour.
The silence frightened her more than shouting ever could.
She checked her reflection in the dark television screen.
Mascara stained her cheeks.
Her expensive silk gown was wrinkled.
The confidence she had worn all evening had disappeared.
She heard footsteps approaching.
Kyle entered.
Neither spoke for several seconds.
Finally...
Thalia stood.
"Kyle..."
He looked at her as though seeing a stranger.
"Is it true?"
She looked away.
"What?"
"The messages."
"The other man."
She hesitated too long.
Kyle already had his answer.
"I loved you."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"I know."
"No."
"You loved what I owned."
She opened her mouth.
He raised a hand.
"For once..."
"Don't lie."
Tears filled Thalia's eyes.
"I never meant for this to happen."
Kyle laughed bitterly.
"Neither did I."
She took one desperate step closer.
"I'm pregnant."
He looked at her stomach.
Then remembered the investigation report.
The canceled DNA appointment.
The messages.
The uncertainty.
Quietly, he asked,
"Do you even know if it's mine?"
Her silence answered him.
Kyle turned toward the door.
"We're done."
His words contained no anger.
Only emptiness.
As he walked away, Thalia called after him.
"You can't leave me!"
He stopped without turning around.
"I already left the only person who never would have left me."
Then he continued walking.
Across the estate, Detective Harris received another phone call.
He listened carefully before thanking the caller.
Then he found Jonathan.
"The financial regulator has contacted us."
Jonathan nodded.
"They've opened an independent review into Vale Holdings."
One executive frowned.
"That's faster than expected."
Harris smiled faintly.
"The video from the security system leaked."
Everyone looked at him.
"We didn't release it," he clarified.
"One of the dinner guests recorded part of the assault on their phone."
Jonathan remained expressionless.
"The internet has little patience."
Within minutes, clips began appearing online.
Not the entire assault.
Only fragments.
Kyle raising the riding crop.
Evelyn standing silently.
The first strike.
The horrified faces of several guests.
Enough to ignite public outrage.
Millions of people who had admired Kyle Vale the day before now questioned everything they thought they knew.
Jonathan looked out the library window.
"Reputation," he said quietly, "takes decades to build."
He glanced toward Evelyn.
"It can disappear in twenty seconds."
Evelyn nodded slowly.
"I don't want revenge."
Jonathan smiled.
"I know."
"What do you want?"
She thought for a long moment.
Finally, she answered.
"I want the truth."
Jonathan placed a reassuring hand over hers.
"Then let the truth finish its work."
Outside, the morning sun finally rose above the hills surrounding the estate.
Its light spilled through the tall windows, illuminating the marble floor where the confrontation had begun only hours earlier.
A new day had arrived.
But for Kyle Vale...
May you like
It was the first morning of a life he no longer recognized.
