Chapter 14 - The Real InheritanceThe DNA report showed a third man.

A man named Thomas Vale.

I had never heard the name.

Margaret had.

She sat down when Samantha said it.

“Thomas.”

I looked at her.

“Who was he?”

She didn't answer.

Harold did.

“He was Evelyn's attorney.”

My grandmother's attorney.

The man who created the trust.

The man who had overseen the corporate transfers.

The man who disappeared shortly before Evelyn died.

Samantha opened another file.

“There's more.”

Thomas Vale had fathered me.

Margaret had been forced to hide me because Thomas had discovered what Eleanor was doing.

The trust wasn't built around the Voss family.

It was built around me.

My grandmother had known exactly who I was.

And she had known that one day everyone would come for the money.

So she hid the real inheritance.

Not in a bank.

Not in the company.

Not in the house.

In me.

My name itself was the key.

Samantha found a final document.

A transfer of intellectual property.

A patent portfolio.

Technology worth hundreds of millions.

The Voss company wasn't the inheritance.

It was only the shell.

The true fortune belonged to Evelyn.

And she had hidden it through a chain of patents registered under my legal identity.

I stared at the documents.

“How much?”

Samantha looked at me.

“Potentially over six hundred million dollars.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Derek laughed softly.

Not happily.

Just in disbelief.

“All these years…”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“You thought I married you for this.”

He looked down.

“But I was wrong.”

“You were.”

“I married you because Eleanor told me to.”

I stepped closer.

“And then?”

He looked into my eyes.

“I fell in love with you.”

I stared at him.

“That doesn't undo anything.”

“I know.”

“You humiliated me.”

“I know.”

“You stole from me.”

“I know.”

“You let your family use me.”

His voice broke.

“I know.”

I wanted to hate him.

Part of me did.

But another part remembered the man I thought he was.

The problem was, that man had never existed.

A police officer entered.

“Claire Hart?”

“Yes.”

“You're under no arrest.”

I almost laughed.

“Why are you telling me that?”

“Because Eleanor Voss was arrested ten minutes ago.”

My heart stopped.

“Where?”

He looked at me.

“At your house.”

I froze.

“What?”

“She told us she had one final piece of evidence.”

We rushed home.

Eleanor was sitting calmly in the library.

The police had her handcuffed.

She smiled at me.

“You finally understand.”

“Understand what?”

She pointed to the wall.

Behind an old portrait was another hidden compartment.

Inside was a small wooden box.

I opened it.

There was a letter.

My grandmother's handwriting.

I read it.

Claire,

If you're reading this, then the people who betrayed me have finally revealed themselves.

But there is one person you must never trust.

I looked at Eleanor.

She smiled.

“No.”

I continued.

His name is Samuel Cole.

I froze.

Samantha.

My attorney.

The woman who had been beside me through everything.

My hands trembled.

Eleanor whispered,

“Now you see.”

I turned toward Samantha.

She looked horrified.

“I didn't do this.”

I looked at the letter.

Then at her.

Then at the name.

Samuel Cole.

Not Samantha.

A man.

My grandmother's handwriting.

May you like

And underneath the name was one final sentence.

He is the reason I died.
