Chapter 12 - The FatherHis name was Richard Hart.

My father.

The man I had spent thirty-two years believing was dead.

He entered the courthouse with three attorneys.

He looked wealthy.

Healthy.

Calm.

And completely unfamiliar.

He saw me.

He smiled.

“Claire.”

I hated how easily he said my name.

As if he'd earned the right.

“You're alive.”

He nodded.

“I'm sorry you had to learn this way.”

“You abandoned me.”

“I protected you.”

Everyone used that sentence.

Every liar in my life seemed to hide behind it.

“You're asking for control of my trust.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you're being manipulated.”

By whom?

He meant Samantha.

Lydia.

Harold.

Everyone except himself.

He handed the judge a psychological evaluation claiming I had been emotionally unstable since the breakdown of my marriage.

I almost laughed.

He had built an entire legal case around my worst moments.

Samantha fought back.

She presented the financial records.

The identity fraud.

The shell companies.

The hidden accounts.

The attempted assault.

The secret basement.

The altered death records.

The first marriage.

The evidence of my grandmother's poisoning.

Then Lydia testified.

The courtroom went silent.

Derek looked broken.

Margaret cried.

Richard stared at the floor.

When Lydia finished, the judge ordered a full forensic investigation into Voss Holdings.

The hearing ended.

Outside the courthouse, cameras were everywhere.

Reporters shouted questions.

“Did your husband steal from you?”

“Is Margaret Voss your biological mother?”

“Is Derek Voss under investigation?”

I ignored them.

Then a reporter shouted,

“Claire!”

I stopped.

He held up a document.

“Is it true your grandmother intended for you to inherit a company worth over four hundred million dollars?”

I froze.

Samantha looked at me.

Four hundred million.

I hadn't known the number.

Then another reporter shouted.

“Is it also true that your father claims the money was never legally yours?”

Richard stepped outside.

His eyes met mine.

And suddenly, he smiled.

Not a warm smile.

A victorious one.

I realized something.

He didn't want the trust because of money.

He wanted it because of something inside it.

I turned toward Samantha.

“We need to find out what he knows.”

That night, we returned to the house.

Every room had been searched.

Drawers opened.

Documents gone.

Furniture moved.

Someone had been there.

On the library wall, a message had been written in red ink.

YOU'RE LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE.

Underneath it:

YOUR GRANDMOTHER HID THE REAL INHERITANCE IN YOUR MARRIAGE.

I stared.

Samantha read it twice.

“What does that mean?”

Derek appeared behind us.

His face was pale.

“I know.”

We turned.

“What?”

He swallowed.

“My marriage to you wasn't just about the trust.”

“Then what was it?”

He stepped forward.

“Your grandmother made me sign a prenuptial agreement.”

I stared.

“What?”

“She knew I was being manipulated.”

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out a document.

“My grandmother forced me to sign this before our wedding.”

I read it.

My heart stopped.

The agreement contained one extraordinary clause.

If Derek ever betrayed me...

All Voss family assets directly connected to him would automatically transfer to me.

I looked up.

“So you knew.”

He nodded.

“Then why did you betray me?”

He looked at me.

“Because I thought the clause was impossible to enforce.”

I folded the document.

“Until yesterday.”

He nodded.

Then his eyes filled with tears.

“Claire…”

“What?”

“I'm not the only one who signed it.”

“Who else?”

May you like

He whispered,

“Your father.”
