Chapter 13 - The ClauseMy father had signed the agreement.

That changed everything.
Samantha spent the night reviewing it.
The clause was real.
Legal.
Enforceable under the trust's governing law.
But there was another provision.
A devastating one.
Any family member who attempted to seize the trust through fraud would forfeit all claims.
Richard had just done exactly that.
We filed an emergency petition.
By morning, every Voss account connected to the trust was frozen.
Eleanor's assets were seized.
Margaret's accounts were protected.
Derek's shares were placed under court supervision.
But Richard disappeared.
We found his car abandoned near the river.
Police searched the area.
Nothing.
Then a message arrived.
Come to the old Voss factory alone.
I showed Samantha.
She immediately said no.
But I knew.
This was the final move.
We went anyway.
Police surrounded the area.
I entered through the main door.
Richard stood inside.
Across from him was Eleanor.
And beside her was Derek.
My husband looked terrified.
“Claire.”
Eleanor smiled.
“Welcome.”
“What do you want?”
“The trust.”
“You can't have it.”
She looked at Richard.
“Tell her.”
Richard stepped forward.
“I am your father.”
“So?”
“I want to protect you.”
“You've spent thirty-two years failing.”
He looked hurt.
“I made mistakes.”
“You tried to take my inheritance.”
“I wanted to stop Eleanor.”
Eleanor laughed.
“Don't listen to him.”
Richard looked at her.
“You promised.”
She raised the gun.
Richard froze.
“You're both using me,” I said.
“No,” Eleanor said.
“You're both afraid.”
She smiled.
Then pointed the gun at Derek.
“Your husband knows why.”
I turned.
Derek looked at me.
“Claire…”
“What?”
He took a breath.
“There is no fourth party.”
“What does that mean?”
“My father isn't your father.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Eleanor looked amused.
“Tell her.”
Richard shook his head.
Derek whispered,
“Your real father is Harold.”
Silence.
I stared at him.
“No.”
Harold suddenly appeared from the shadows.
My entire body went cold.
He looked at me.
“Claire…”
I couldn't speak.
Margaret was my mother.
Harold was my father.
Derek was my half-brother.
I stumbled backward.
“No.”
Harold's eyes filled with tears.
“Your grandmother took you from us.”
“Why?”
“Because your father wanted the company.”
Richard shouted,
“That's a lie!”
The gun fired.
Richard collapsed.
Eleanor ran.
Police stormed the building.
Derek grabbed my arm.
I screamed.
“Don't touch me!”
He let go.
Harold fell to his knees.
“Claire, please.”
I couldn't look at him.
My entire life had become a carefully constructed lie.
Then Samantha ran inside.
She was holding a folder.
“Claire!”
I turned.
“What?”
She looked horrified.
“We found something in the trust records.”
“What?”
She opened the file.
“The DNA test.”
I froze.
Harold was not my father.
Neither was Richard.
Samantha looked at me.
“Claire…”
“Who is?”
May you like
She whispered the name.
And I realized the real mystery had only just begun.
