Chapter 3 - VANESSAThe next morning, I woke to the sound of a newborn crying.

For a few seconds, I forgot everything.
The pain.
Daniel.
The car.
The police.
I looked down at my daughter.
She was tiny.
Perfect.
Completely unaware that the family she had been born into was already falling apart.
I named her Lily.
Daniel had wanted the name Emma.
I suddenly realized how much of our life had been dictated by what Daniel wanted.
Lily.
I whispered her name.
Then the door opened.
Detective Alvarez stepped inside.
“We found the suitcase.”
My stomach dropped.
“And?”
She closed the door behind her.
“It contained documents.”
“What kind?”
“Property transfers.”
My heart stopped.
She handed me a folder.
The first page was our house deed.
My name was there.
Daniel's name was there.
Then I saw the second page.
A proposed transfer.
My house.
To a company I had never heard of.
I looked up.
“What is this?”
Detective Alvarez answered carefully.
“A shell company.”
“Owned by whom?”
She paused.
“Vanessa.”
I stared at her.
Everything became silent.
My husband's mistress had been trying to take my house.
But why?
“She wasn't doing this alone,” Alvarez said.
“Daniel?”
“Yes.”
I closed my eyes.
I thought about every argument we'd had.
Every time Daniel told me I was overreacting.
Every time he said we needed to save money.
Every time he said the business wasn't doing well.
It had all been a lie.
“How long?”
“Possibly over a year.”
A year.
My daughter wasn't even born yet.
This wasn't an affair that had destroyed my marriage.
It was something much larger.
The affair had only been one piece of it.
The detective sat beside me.
“There's more.”
I looked at her.
“Vanessa came to the station voluntarily.”
“Why?”
“She says Daniel threatened her.”
I frowned.
“She was helping him.”
“At first.”
“What changed?”
Detective Alvarez handed me Vanessa's statement.
The first paragraph made my hands shake.
Daniel told me his wife would be gone soon.
I looked up.
“What does that mean?”
“We don't know yet.”
“Gone how?”
“We're investigating.”
I read the next page.
Vanessa claimed Daniel had told her I would eventually move out.
That he would make sure I had no money.
That he would take the house.
That he would use the car as collateral.
But there was one sentence that made my blood freeze.
He said the baby would make everything easier.
I stared at those words.
“The baby?”
“Yes.”
My daughter moved in her bassinet.
I touched her tiny hand.
“What did he mean?”
Detective Alvarez hesitated.
Then she said something I would never forget.
“Your husband may have been counting on you being financially dependent on him after the birth.”
I felt sick.
But Vanessa's statement contained something worse.
A date.
A date three days from now.
“What happens then?” I asked.
“We're not sure.”
“Then find out.”
She looked at me.
I had never spoken to her this way before.
Not as a frightened wife.
Not as a victim.
As someone who wanted answers.
Detective Alvarez nodded.
“We're trying.”
Just before she left, she turned back.
“One more thing.”
“Yes?”
“Vanessa says Daniel told her something else.”
“What?”
“He said you wouldn't be able to fight him once the baby was born.”
My chest tightened.
Then Detective Alvarez added quietly:
“He was wrong.”
After she left, I stared at Lily.
For nine months, I thought I was preparing to become a mother.
I hadn't realized I was preparing for war.
And somewhere across town, Daniel was sitting in a police interview room.
But he wasn't worried about prison.
According to Vanessa, he was worried about one thing.
A locked compartment in my SUV.
May you like
Because whatever was inside it…
was worth enough to destroy all of us.
