Chapter 10 - THE REAL INHERITANCEDaniel didn't fire.

Instead, he lowered the gun.
That frightened me more.
A desperate man pulls the trigger.
A confident man believes he has time.
“You want the key,” I said.
“No.”
He smiled.
“I already got the key.”
I froze.
“What?”
He pointed at my necklace.
Then at the storage unit.
“Your father built Meridian to protect a database. The necklace doesn't open the vault. It authenticates you.”
“What vault?”
“The real one.”
I looked at Edward.
He looked terrified.
“What did my father build?”
Daniel laughed.
“You still don't understand.”
He stepped forward.
“Your father wasn't protecting money.”
“Then what?”
“Evidence.”
I tightened my grip on the ledger.
“Against Voss?”
“Against everyone.”
Daniel explained that Meridian contained records proving that powerful people had manipulated markets, bribed officials, and erased financial trails.
My father had discovered it.
He had copied everything.
Then he built a system that could expose it automatically if anything happened to him.
I stared.
“How does it work?”
Daniel looked at my stomach.
At Lily.
Then back at me.
“The system only activates under three conditions.”
“What conditions?”
“Your identity.”
“My fingerprint.”
“Yes.”
“What's the third?”
He smiled.
“Your child.”
My blood froze.
“What did you say?”
“The system recognized you as the primary beneficiary.”
“And Lily?”
“The system recognizes biological descendants.”
I clutched my baby.
Daniel's eyes became cold.
“Your father assumed they'd come after you. He never imagined you'd have a child.”
“So that's why you waited until I was pregnant.”
Silence.
His expression answered everything.
I felt something inside me break.
Not heartbreak.
Something harder.
Hatred.
“You never loved me.”
Daniel's eyes flickered.
“I cared about you.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You cared about what I represented.”
He didn't deny it.
Then Detective Alvarez stepped forward.
“Daniel, put the gun down.”
He laughed.
“You still don't understand, Detective.”
She raised her weapon.
“You're surrounded.”
Daniel looked behind him.
Then smiled.
“I know.”
A loud explosion rocked the storage facility.
The lights went out.
Smoke filled the room.
Someone grabbed Lily.
I screamed.
Not Daniel.
Someone else.
I saw a silhouette running through the smoke.
I chased them.
The ledger fell from my hands.
“Lily!”
Her cry echoed.
I ran through a side door.
Outside, a black van was pulling away.
Daniel was gone.
Vanessa was gone.
Lily was gone.
I dropped to my knees.
For the first time that night, I didn't think about money.
Or Meridian.
Or revenge.
I only thought about my daughter.
Then my phone rang.
My real phone.
The one Daniel had stolen days earlier.
It shouldn't have been in my possession.
I answered.
A distorted voice said:
“You have thirty minutes.”
My breath stopped.
“To do what?”
“Bring us the ledger.”
I looked at the empty road.
“And if I don't?”
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“Your daughter dies.”
