Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN IN THE AMBULANCEThe pavement burned against my bare ankle.

I could still feel the heat through the thin hospital sock that had slipped halfway off my foot when my husband dragged me out of the ambulance.
Another contraction tore through me.
I screamed.
Not because I wanted attention.
Because our baby was coming.
“Someone help her!”
A paramedic dropped to his knees beside me while the other stood between me and my husband.
“Sir, step away from her.”
My husband, Daniel, barely looked at me.
He was staring at his phone.
More specifically, at the name glowing across the screen.
Vanessa.
His mistress.
The woman he had spent six months insisting was “just a colleague.”
The woman whose perfume I had smelled on his shirts.
The woman who had once called our house at midnight and hung up the second I answered.
Daniel had told me I was paranoid.
Now she was waiting for him in my SUV.
And my husband had just abandoned me in active labor to go to her.
“I need the keys,” he snapped.
I clutched the side of the stretcher.
“No.”
The word barely came out.
Another contraction.
I curled forward, trying to breathe.
Daniel reached into my hospital bag.
The paramedic caught his wrist.
“You cannot touch her belongings.”
Daniel yanked free.
“She’s my wife.”
“Your wife is a patient in active labor.”
“I said she’s fine.”
I looked at him.
For the first time in nine years of marriage, I didn't recognize the man standing in front of me.
“Daniel… please.”
He ignored me.
He grabbed my phone.
Then my keys.
I tried to sit up.
He shoved me back.
My hip slipped from the stretcher.
I fell hard against the pavement.
The hospital bag spilled open.
A baby blanket landed beside my hand.
Tiny white socks rolled beneath the ambulance.
The sight of them broke something inside me.
Our daughter was supposed to wear those socks.
I had packed them the night before.
Daniel was supposed to be beside me.
Instead, he was walking away.
“Daniel!”
He stopped.
For one second, I thought he might come back.
He turned.
His expression was cold.
“You always make everything about yourself.”
Then he lifted the phone to his ear.
“Yes,” he said. “I have the car.”
I heard Vanessa's voice faintly through the speaker.
“Did you get the keys?”
Daniel smiled.
“Yes.”
Another contraction came.
I screamed.
A paramedic immediately helped lift me back onto the stretcher.
Daniel walked toward the SUV.
I watched him open the driver's door.
Then he turned his head toward me.
“I'll deal with you after tonight,” he said.
He got into the car.
The engine roared.
Before the SUV disappeared, I heard him say one final sentence into the phone.
“After tonight, she won't be able to control the car anymore.”
The ambulance doors slammed shut.
Everything after that happened quickly.
The paramedics rushed me into the hospital.
A nurse asked if Daniel was allowed inside.
“No.”
My answer surprised even me.
I had spent years making excuses for him.
This time, I didn't.
“No,” I repeated.
The contractions were getting closer.
The baby was coming.
And my husband had just driven away with my car, my phone, and the last remaining piece of my trust.
Three hours later, while I was being monitored in a secure maternity room, two detectives appeared at the door.
One was a woman in her forties.
The other was a tall man holding a tablet.
“Mrs. Carter?”
“Yes.”
“My name is Detective Alvarez.”
She sat beside me.
“We need to talk about your husband.”
My stomach tightened.
“He took my car.”
“We know.”
“He took my phone.”
“We know that too.”
I swallowed.
“How?”
Detective Alvarez exchanged a glance with her partner.
“Because someone gave us the recording.”
My blood went cold.
“What recording?”
The detective placed her phone on the table.
Then she pressed play.
My own voice filled the room.
“Daniel, please don't do this.”
Then came the sound of the paramedic shouting.
Then Daniel's voice.
Cold.
Impatient.
Cruel.
“After tonight, she won't be able to control the car anymore.”
I stared at the phone.
“Who recorded this?”
The detective looked directly at me.
“Vanessa.”
I froze.
His mistress had recorded him.
And apparently, she hadn't done it to protect him.
She had done it because she was terrified of what he was planning.
Detective Alvarez leaned forward.
“Mrs. Carter…”
Her voice became quieter.
“Your husband wasn't just stealing your car.”
“He was trying to make sure you never owned it again.”
And then she slid a photograph across the table.
It showed my SUV parked outside a bank.
A bank I had never visited.

And beside the SUV stood Daniel…
holding a folder with my name on it.
