Chapter 3 - Marcus did not sit down.He remained standing beside the coffee table, watching Daniel as though judging whether he could handle what came next.

Evelyn looked furious.
“Get out.”
Marcus ignored her.
Daniel placed the documents down.
“Start talking.”
Marcus looked at Claire.
“She doesn't remember.”
“Remember what?” Daniel asked.
Marcus glanced at Evelyn.
Then back at Claire.
“Your first meeting with my daughter.”
Claire frowned.
“I don't have a daughter.”
Marcus's face fell.
“You were never told.”
Daniel looked at his mother.
“What is he talking about?”
Evelyn said nothing.
Marcus pulled an old photograph from his coat.
He placed it on the table.
Claire stared.
The image showed a hospital nursery.
Rows of newborns.
One tiny baby wrapped in a pale pink blanket.
A handwritten card beside the crib read:
Baby M. Hale
Claire looked up.
“Why are you showing me this?”
Marcus's voice cracked.
“Because she was alive when she left that hospital.”
Silence.
Daniel stared at him.
“What does that have to do with Claire?”
Marcus slowly answered.
“Your mother knows.”
Evelyn finally spoke.
“Stop.”
Marcus turned.
“You lied to her for years.”
“I protected her.”
“From the truth?”
“From a mistake.”
Claire's pulse raced.
“What mistake?”
Evelyn looked at her.
For once, there was no arrogance in her expression.
Only fear.
“You don't remember the summer before your wedding.”
Claire shook her head.
“I remember.”
“You were hospitalized.”
Daniel turned sharply.
“You never told me that.”
Claire frowned.
“I had food poisoning.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
“No.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What happened to her?”
Marcus opened his eyes.
“She was involved in a car accident.”
Claire felt dizzy.
“No.”
“You were unconscious for six days.”
“That isn't true.”
Marcus reached into his coat again.
He produced an old newspaper clipping.
Claire stared at the photograph.
A mangled black sedan.
The date was nine months before her wedding.
Then she saw the headline.
LOCAL CRASH LEAVES YOUNG WOMAN IN CRITICAL CONDITION
The name beneath it was hers.
Claire's hands began shaking.
“How did I survive?”
Marcus didn't answer immediately.
“Your mother-in-law came to the hospital.”
Claire looked at Evelyn.
Daniel whispered, “Mom?”
Marcus continued.
“She told the hospital staff she was your emergency contact.”
Claire's heart stopped.
“I wasn't married to Daniel yet.”
“No.”
“Then why would she be my emergency contact?”
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“That is exactly what I wanted to know.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“You're twisting this.”
Marcus's voice hardened.
“You had access to Claire's medical records.”
Daniel stared.
“How?”
“My connections,” Evelyn replied coldly.
Marcus laughed.
“Your connections?”
He pulled another document from the envelope.
“This is the original hospital consent form.”
He placed it before Daniel.
The signature belonged to Evelyn.
Daniel stared at it.
“What did you consent to?”
Marcus said:
“A procedure.”
Claire's breath caught.
“What procedure?”
Evelyn's silence answered before Marcus did.
“An identity correction.”
Daniel looked up.
“What?”
Marcus pointed to the form.
“After the accident, Claire woke up confused. She had memory loss.”
Claire's face went numb.
“You're lying.”
Marcus shook his head.
“She couldn't remember certain parts of her life.”
“What did my mother do?” Daniel asked.
“She convinced the doctors and your family that some memories were dangerous.”
Evelyn's voice was suddenly sharp.
“She was unstable.”
Marcus turned on her.
“She was vulnerable.”
“You weren't there.”
“I was there.”
“You abandoned her.”
“I was trying to protect my child!”
The room went dead silent.
Daniel stared.
“Your child?”
Marcus looked at Claire.
Then at Daniel.
“The baby in that photograph.”
Claire's mouth went dry.
Marcus continued.
“After the crash, you were pregnant.”
Everything inside Claire stopped.
Daniel's face went white.
“I was what?”
“Seven months.”
Claire grabbed the back of the sofa.
“No.”
“You lost the baby.”
A terrible silence filled the room.
Claire shook her head.
“I would remember.”
“You don't,” Marcus said softly. “That's the point.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“She was told the baby died.”
Marcus's expression hardened.
“She was.”
Claire looked between them.
“Then why are you here?”
Marcus reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a photograph.
This one was newer.
A little girl.
Maybe four years old.
Dark hair.
Brown eyes.
A tiny silver bracelet around her wrist.
Claire stared at the face.
Something deep inside her moved.
A memory.
A hospital room.
A crying baby.
A woman whispering:
She looks just like you.
Claire dropped the photograph.
Daniel caught it.
“Who is she?”
Marcus looked at him.
“That's the question I've been trying to answer for four years.”
Evelyn whispered, “No.”
Marcus's eyes hardened.
“She's alive.”
Claire's heart slammed against her ribs.
Daniel stared at his mother.
“You said Claire lost the baby.”
Evelyn said nothing.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Mom.”
Still nothing.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
Tell Daniel to ask his mother where the child was taken.
Daniel looked up.
Evelyn suddenly grabbed her purse.
Marcus blocked her.
“Don't.”
She froze.

And for the first time, Claire saw something she had never seen in four years.
